Autotransfusion in splenic rupture.

Different methods of autotransfusion have been employed by various people in various places for various reasons. In Papua New Guinea autotransfusion has been practised, but the methods used have not been described and illustrated. In this case presentation we illustrate a simple inexpensive and aseptic method that was used at the Tabubil Health Centre to autotransfuse a young local man who ruptured his enlarged spleen when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident in August 1991. The advantages of this method are mentioned. Also mentioned are other expensive methods of autotransfusion used i…

Spontaneous rupture of ureter.

A patient with spontaneous ureteral rupture in the absence of obstruction or calculus disease is presented. In addition to ureteral rupture this patient also had a penile squamous cell carcinoma and infected inguinal lymph nodes. A review of the literature discloses that all reported cases with spontaneous rupture of the ureter had an underlying process leading to that rupture. It is considered, therefore, that rupture of the ureter should be designated as "traumatic" or "nontraumatic." The term "spontaneous," implying a primary event, is a misnomer. No such case has been reported occurring in…

Spontaneous rupture of spleen.

Spontaneous rupture of spleen, is a rare abdominal catastrophe, during pregnancy and labour, associated with 100% maternal and foetal mortality if not diagnosed in time. An awareness about this rare entity on the part of an obstetrician leading to timely diagnosis, prompt splenectomy and proper replacement of blood provides good prognosis for mother and foetus. A rare case of spontaneous rupture of NORMAL spleen during labour with delivery of a live baby by lower segment caesarean section followed by splenectomy is presented and the literature is reviewed.

Risk Factors for Contralateral Tendon Rupture in Patients With Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture.

The present study was performed to determine the incidence and risk factors of contralateral Achilles tendon rupture after an initial tendon rupture, and to identify the associated patient characteristics. Medical records of 181 adult patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were reviewed. We investigated the risk factors for contralateral Achilles tendon rupture and calculated the incidence density (per 100 person-years), survival rate, hazard ratios, and 95% confidence intervals. The risk factors were extracted, including blood type, age, body mass index (BMI), occupation, underlying como…

[Simultaneous Traumatic Rupture of Patellar Ligament and Contralateral Rupture of Quadriceps Femoris Muscle].

Our paper presents a unique case of a 64-year-old patient after a fall, treated with oral antidiabetic drugs for type II diabetes mellitus. Following a series of examinations, a bilateral injury was diagnosed - patellar ligament tear on the right side and rupture of quadriceps femoris muscle on the left side. It is a rare injury, complicated by simultaneous involvement of both knee joints. The used therapy consisted of a bilateral surgery followed by gradual verticalisation, first with the support of a walking frame and later with the use of forearm crutches. During the final examination, the …

The Prodrome of Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendonitis and Rupture: Rupture May Be Preventable.

Current literature suggests that tendonitis of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) is a rare condition that has a high rate of progression to rupture. This study documents the prodrome of impending EPL rupture in patients with prior nondisplaced distal radial fracture. A retrospective study identified patients with EPL tendonitis or tendon rupture. Seven patients (6 females and 1 male) had sustained a nondisplaced distal radius fracture within the past year. Among these 7 patients, 4 eventually developed EPL tendon rupture and 3 had tendonitis without rupture. Of the 4 patients with EPL rupture…

Simultaneous reconstruction of quadriceps tendon rupture after TKA and neglected Achilles tendon rupture.

We report a case of simultaneous reconstruction of a quadriceps tendon rupture after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and neglected Achilles tendon rupture, which occurred before TKA with an ipsilateral hamstring autograft. A 64-year-old woman presented with persistent right knee pain. She also had right heel pain and had received multiple steroid injections at the knee joint and heel. On examination, she showed osteoarthritis in the medial and lateral compartments of the knee joint and an Achilles tendon rupture in the ipsilateral limb. There was skin dimpling and the proximal portion of tendon …

Splenic rupture following idiopathic rupture of the urinary bladder presenting as acute abdomen.

Idiopathic rupture of the urinary bladder is an uncommon condition and represents less than 1% of all bladder rupture cases. In most of the cases the main etiological factor was heavy alcohol ingestion. A combined injury of the spleen and bladder is a very rare condition that is almost often associated with trauma and foreign bodies. In this paper we present the extremely rare clinical course of acute abdomen caused by a combined spontaneous intraperitoneal injury; spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder and spleen. According to our opinion, spontaneous bladder rupture caused by bladder dis…
