Primate herpesviral oncogenes.

Gammaherpesviruses are the most rapidly growing members of the herpesviridae family. Gamma herpesviruses share similarity in their genome or … thogenesis. This open reading frame encodes latent membrane protein-1 (LMP1) in Epstein-Barr virus, Saimiri transformation protein (STP) in Herpesvirus Saimiri, K1 in Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, and R1 in Rhesus monkey Rhadinovirus. All of these gene products are capable of eliciting cellular signal transduction events, resulting in cell grow …

Cerebral beta-amyloid angiopathy in aged squirrel monkeys.

Cerebral beta-amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is an age-related disorder of the brain vasculature that is involved in up to 20% of non-traumatic cerebral hemorrhage in humans. CAA is a risk factor for cognitive decline, and may exacerbate the dementia of Alzheimer's disease. Progress in discovering the cause and potential therapies for this disorder has been hindered by the paucity of animal models, particularly models of idiopathic CAA. The squirrel monkey (Saimiri spp) develops significant CAA in the natural course of aging. To evaluate the suitability of Saimiri as a model of human CAA, we studied…

[Lymphocyte heterogeneity of the T system: characterization of an allotypic antiserum recognizing a sub-species antigenic determinant in non-human primates].

To determine the membrane properties in T-lymphocyte population from Saguinus primates or lymphoblastoid cell lines of the same origin, an allotypic antiserum was prepared inoculating two Saguinus illigeri with 3.5 x 10(10) viable 70N2 cells obtained in-vitro, from a lymphoma induced by inoculation of Herpesvirus Saimiri in a Saguinus oedipus. The 70N2 cells carried the virus genome in an episomal way; it did not produce infectious virus and it formed spontaneous rosettes (99%) with sheep erythrocytes. The resulting allotypic antiserum inhibited the formation of E rosettes and specifically rea…

Two types of trichromatic squirrel monkey share a pigment in the red-green spectral region.

Microspectrophotometric measurements have been obtained for individual photoreceptors from four female squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) that had been shown behaviourally to be trichromatic. Relative to a normal human observer, two of the monkeys required more red light for a Rayleigh match; the other two required more green light than a normal human observer. In the red-green spectral region, the first type of monkey was found to have two cone pigments with peak sensitivities at approximately 536 and 549 nm, whereas the second type was found to have pigments with peak sensitivities at appro…

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 in Trigeminal Ganglia of Trafficked Neotropical Primates, Peru, 2024.

We detected herpes simplex virus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of trafficked Neotropical primates (1 Aotus azarai; 3 Sapajus macrocephalus) in Peru. Tests also revealed Saimiriine alphaherpesvirus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of 2 Saimiri sp. monkeys. Our findings suggest latency and raise concerns about diagnostic standards, viral reactivation, and spillover risks.

[Plasmodium falciparum and chondroitin-4-sulfate: the new key couple in sequestration].

Some complications of Plasmodium falciparum infection such as cerebral malaria and pregnancy-associated malaria may be partially due to cytoadherence of erythrocytes infected by mature parasites on microvascular endothelial cells or placental syncytiotrophoblasts. Recently a new cytoadherence receptor, chondroitin-4-sulphate (CSA), was identified first on endothelial cells in primates and then on CHO cells and purified receptors. Further study has implicated CSA in cytoadherence of infected red blood cells to syncytiotrophoblasts in human placenta and Saimiri sciureus monkeys. In solution the …

Trypanosomes and microfilariae in feral owl and squirrel monkeys maintained in research colonies.

A group of 358 owl and squirrel monkeys imported from Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia for the U.S. Agency for International Development Malaria Vaccine Development Program was examined for trypanosomes and microfilariae. Trypanosoma rangeli, isolated by hemoculture from Aotus nancymai, Saimiri b. boliviensis, and S. b. peruviensis, accounted for 76.6% of all trypanosome infections. Trypanosoma cruzi was isolated from 25 of 194 S. b. boliviensis, including two mixed infections with T. rangeli. Identifications of trypanosomes were confirmed by blinded tests with a panel of five rRNA probes on a subs…

Tumorigenicity of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoid line cells in autologous squirrel monkeys.

Eight squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) challenged with EBV or EBV-transformed SLCL were naturally or experimentally infected with Plasmodium knowlesi or Pl. brasilianum. Most of the animals had been splenectomized and unilaterally nephrectomized. Three of these monkeys received one dose of 6 to 12 X 10(8) autologous SLCL. These lines were derived from saimiri lymphoid cells permanently transformed by B-EBV in vitro. All three animals developed multiple undifferentiated malignant lymphomas and died 8 to 10 days post inoculation. Necropsy tumor specimens were EBNA-positive and contained 7 to …

Effects of diphenylhydantoin and chloroquine on monkey liver microsomal mixed-function oxidases.

Sixteen adult male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were randomly divided into three treatment groups and one control group. Each treatment group received 10 mg/kg oral doses of diphenylhydantoin and/or chloroquine. Following sacrifice, in vitro assays for activity of liver microsomal mixed-function oxidases were run. The assays confirmed diphenylhydantoin as a potent inducer of mixed-function oxidases. Chloroquine administration had little affect on the enzymes assayed and did not inhibit the diphenylhydantoin induction.

Acute toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys.

Five cases of acute toxoplasmosis in caged squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were reviewed. The early stages of systemic toxoplasmosis were present in all cases. In the liver, there were multiple foci of hepatocellular necrosis. The lung had diffuse interstitial pneumonia. Tachyzoites were mainly seen associated with lesions in the liver, lung, and spleen. Immunohistochemically, tachyzoites reacted with T. gondii antibody. Electron-microscopically, intracellular tachyzoite was surrounded by a thin wall and was in a membrane-bound parasitophorus vacuole.

Obstetric Constraints in Six Monkey Genera.

OBJECTIVES: Our previous work has shown that the pelvic inlet is not a point of obstetric constraint in nonhuman apes. In this study, we have extended that work to include monkey genera where research indicated the presence of significant cephalopelvic constraint, even at the pelvic inlet. We identified the true minimum dimensions of the birth canal in these monkeys and compared them to fetal head dimensions in order to determine the actual obstetric constraints in these species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pelves of six monkey genera (Ateles, Callithrix, Cebus, Lagothrix, Papio, and Saimiri) were…

Herpesvirus ateles gene product Tio interacts with nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases.

Herpesvirus ateles is a gamma-2-herpesvirus which naturally infects spider monkeys (Ateles spp.) and causes malignant lymphoproliferative disorders in various other New World primates. The genomic sequence of herpesvirus ateles strain 73 revealed a close relationship to herpesvirus saimiri, with a high degree of variability within the left terminus of the coding region. A spliced mRNA transcribed from this region was detected in New World monkey T-cell lines transformed by herpesvirus ateles in vitro or derived from T cells of infected Saguinus oedipus. The encoded viral protein, termed Tio, s…

Acute disseminated fatal toxoplasmosis in a squirrel monkey.

Acute disseminated toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in an adult male squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus). The disease was characterized by severe pulmonary edema, diffuse interstitial pneumonia, and multifocal areas of necrosis along with Toxoplasma organisms in the lungs, liver, spleen, lymph nodes, adrenal glands, and heart. Small numbers of organisms were found in bone marrow, renal glomeruli, and renal tubular epithelial and interstitial cells. Small numbers of organisms also were associated with foci of hemorrhage in the brain. The source of the infection was not determined.

[Taste buds in the epithelium of the plica sublingualis of New World monkeys (author's transl)].

The Plica sublingualis of new world monkeys was studied microscopically. In Ateles there are approximately 1700 taste buds in the epithelium of the Plica sublingualis, they are fewer in number in Alouatta, Lagothrix, Aotus and are absent in Saimiri and Cebus. The taste buds are situated consistently at the tip of the Plica sublingualis and near the orifices of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. From this topographical coincidence it is inferred that the function of the taste buds at the Plica sublingualis might permit a comparison between the fresh saliva with the general saliva…

Kinetic and phenotypic changes in murine lymphocytes infected with murine gammaherpesvirus-68 in vitro.

Primary infection with murine gammaherpesvirus-68 (MHV-68), as with other members of the gammaherpesvirus subfamily, is characterized by a l … murine splenocytes and stimulated cellular proliferation. Unlike Epstein-Barr virus and herpesvirus saimiri, MHV-68 did not cause growth transformation. Growth transformation did not occur even when cells with a predisposition to transformation were infected or when culture conditions were selected to enhance the viability of the cells. Effect of human gamma interferon on yellow fever virus infection.

We studied yellow fever virus infection in two species of monkey: Saimiri sciureus (squirrel monkeys) and Macaca mulatta (rhesus monkeys). Human gamma interferon was administered intravenously in five equal doses, one was given 24 hr before infection followed by four doses 24 hr apart. Interferon reduced the levels and duration of viremia and the severity of hepatitis in squirrel monkeys. Interferon prolonged survival time and delayed the appearance of viremia and hepatitis in infected rhesus monkeys, but it did not change overall mortality.

Urinary prolactin is correlated with mothering and allo-mothering in squirrel monkeys.

The hormone prolactin is implicated in infant care-giving by parents and allo-parents in a variety of species. Adult female squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) engage in allo-mothering behavior, which includes carrying and nursing infants, but communal care of offspring has not been investigated from an endocrine standpoint in this taxon. We attempted to fill this gap by examining prolactin levels in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) as a function of parental responsiveness. Subjects were housed at the National Institutes of Health Animal Center and assays were performed at the Wisconsin Nationa…

Fasting hyperbilirubinemia in normal squirrel monkeys.

The plasma of Bolivian squirrel monkeys, unlike that of Brazilian squirrel monkeys, is markedly yellow due to unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia after an overnight fast. The fasting hyperbilirubinemia in Bolivian squirrel monkeys is likely due to two mechanisms. First, a twofold increase in the bilirubin turnover/production rate occurs during a 24-hour fast. A second mechanism is the decreased hepatic conjugation potential for bilirubin due to the presence of a higher bilirubin UDP-glucuronosyltransferase UDPGAKm and a lower Vm; this results in higher steady-state plasma and hepatic bilirubin lev
