PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcopenia is a wasting disease, mostly age-related in which muscle strength and mass decline, such as physical performance. With aging, both lower dietary protein intake and anabolic resistance lead to sarcopenia. Moreover, aging and sarcopenia display low-grade inflammation, which also worsen muscle condition. In this review, we focused on these two main targets to study dietary strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: The better understanding in mechanisms involved in sarcopenia helps building combined dietary approaches including physical activity that would slow the disease progre…

The implementation of shared decision making (SDM) in management of sarcopenia is still in its nascent stage, especially compared to other areas of medical research. Accumulating evidence has highlighted the importance of SDM in older adults care. The current study overviews general SDM practices and explores the potential advantages and dilemmas of incorporating these concepts into sarcopenia management. We present common patient decision aids available for sarcopenia management and propose future research directions. SDM can be effectively integrated into daily practice with the aid of struc…

Sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and/or strength) frequently complicates liver cirrhosis and adversely affects the quality of life; cirrhosis related liver decompensation and significantly decreases wait-list and post-liver transplantation survival. The main therapeutic strategies to improve or reverse sarcopenia include dietary interventions (supplemental calorie and protein intake), increased physical activity (supervised resistance and endurance exercises), hormonal therapy (testosterone), and ammonia lowering agents (L-ornithine L-aspartate, branch chain amino acids) as well as mechanistic …

In the elderly, there is a reduction of the efficiency in many organs, including muscles. The weight, strength and power reduction of elderly muscles is defined as sarcopenia. The pathophysiology of sarcopenia is multifactorial, it can be influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as reduced caloric intake, denervation of muscle fibers - in the course of various neurodegenerative diseases, intracellular oxidative stress, hormonal disorders and others. The European Working Group on sarcopenia in the elderly published diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia in 2010, which should increase the …

Sarcopenia of age is prevalent and costly and proven pharmacological interventions are currently lacking. The pathophysiology of sarcopenia is incompletely understood but appears to involve multiple pathways, including inflammation, hormonal dysregulation, impaired regeneration, mitochondrial dysfunction and denervation. There are several ways in which we might select potential pharmacological interventions for testing in clinical trials. These include a 'bottom-up' approach using basic science to elucidate the molecular processes involved and identify potential targets from this knowledge-a s…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the nomenclature, clinical impact, and diagnostic techniques characterizing sarcopenia.
CONCLUSION: Sarcopenia-defined as significant loss of muscle-is associated with cachexia and frailty. Specific diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia continue to evolve, but imaging can play a role in the detection and quantification of muscle depletion. Emerging evidence indicates that sarcopenia is a relevant predictor of quality and quantity of life, particularly in patients who are elderly, have cancer, or undergo surgery.

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, is characterized by a deterioration of muscle quantity and quality leading to a gradual slowing of movement, a decline in strength and power, increased risk of fall-related injury, and, often, frailty. Since sarcopenia is largely attributed to various molecular mediators affecting fiber size, mitochondrial homeostasis, and apoptosis, the mechanisms responsible for these deleterious changes present numerous therapeutic targets for drug discovery. Resistance training combined with amino acid-containing supplements is often utilized to pre…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sarcopenia, characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass and function, significantly reduces the quality of life and increases mortality risk in older individuals. Recent evidence highlights the role of intestinal permeability and its associated biomarker, zonulin, in the development of sarcopenia via chronic inflammation pathways. However, the relationship between serum zonulin levels and sarcopenia remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between serum zonulin levels and sarcopenia in elderly individuals and to assess the potential of zonulin…

OBJECTIVE: Reliable identification of high-risk older adults who are likely to develop sarcopenia is essential to implement targeted preventive measures and follow-up. However, no sarcopenia prediction model is currently available for community use. Our objective was to develop and validate a risk prediction model for calculating the 1-year absolute risk of developing sarcopenia in an aging population.
METHODS: One prospective population-based cohort of non-sarcopenic individuals aged 60 years or older were used for the development of a sarcopenia risk prediction model and model validation. S…

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a substantial therapeutic target, yet the validity of risk stratification values per the latest Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2019 (AWGS 2019) remains unconfirmed in patients with heart failure. We hypothesized that using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) to assess physical performance improves risk stratification.
METHODS: The study included 832 hospitalized patients with heart failure who could walk at discharge. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using both the original AWGS 2019 criteria (AWGS 2019 model) and an alternative method in which physical performance componen…

BACKGROUND: An increasing body of evidence has revealed the association between immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) and sarcopenia. However, a genetically direct causality between IMIDs and sarcopenia remains elusive.
METHODS: To investigate the relationship between IMIDs and sarcopenia-related traits and identify potential therapeutic targets, a Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed. We collected publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data for seven common IMIDs, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease …

The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) presents an updated 2025 consensus reframing sarcopenia management through a life-course approach to muscle health promotion. While aligning with the Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia (GLIS), this update provides healthcare providers with Asia-specific guidance. The consensus introduces three key refinements: first, expanding sarcopenia diagnosis to middle-aged adults (50‒64 years) with validated diagnostic thresholds; second, simplifying the diagnostic algorithm to require only concurrent low muscle mass and strength, with physical perfor…
