The Enzymatic Core of Scorpion Venoms.

Enzymes are an integral part of animal venoms. Unlike snakes, in which enzymes play a primary role in envenomation, in scorpions, their function appears to be ancillary in most species. Due to this, studies on the diversity of scorpion venom components have focused primarily on the peptides responsible for envenomation (toxins) and a few others (e.g., antimicrobials), while enzymes have been overlooked. In this work, a comprehensive study on enzyme diversity in scorpion venoms was performed by transcriptomic and proteomic techniques. Enzymes of 63 different EC types were found, belonging to 33…

Scorpion envenomation: state of the art.

Scorpion envenomation is common in the tropical and subtropical regions. It poses a major public health problem with some patients having serious clinical manifestations and severe complications including death. Old World and New World scorpions are usually contrasted because of differences in venom composition, clinical presentation and severity, and, accordingly, different therapeutic approaches. The majority of scorpion stings are either dry or result in low amounts of injected venom, thus explaining why up to 95% of scorpion stings ensue only in local signs. For a clinical envenomation to …

Scorpion Venom: Detriments and Benefits.

Scorpion venom may cause severe medical complications and untimely death if injected into the human body. Neurotoxins are the main components of scorpion venom that are known to be responsible for the pathological manifestations of envenoming. Besides neurotoxins, a wide range of other bioactive molecules can be found in scorpion venoms. Advances in separation, characterization, and biotechnological approaches have enabled not only the development of more effective treatments against scorpion envenomings, but have also led to the discovery of several scorpion venom peptides with interesting th

Elemental analysis of scorpion venoms.

Scorpion venom is a rich source of biomolecules, which can perturb physiological activity of the host on envenomation and may also have a therapeutic potential. Scorpion venoms produced by the columnar cells of venom gland are complex mixture of mucopolysaccharides, neurotoxic peptides and other components. This study was aimed at cataloguing the elemental composition of venoms obtained from medically important scorpions found in the Arabian peninsula. The global elemental composition of the crude venom obtained from Androctonus bicolor, Androctonus crassicauda and Leiurus quinquestriatus scor…

Scorpion bite, a sting to the heart!

Scorpion bites are common in India. Usually, these bites are harmless but sometimes have serious clinical sequelae, including death. We report herein a case of scorpion bite with electrocardiographic abnormalities simulating early myocardial infarction. Pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure accompanied these electrocardiographic changes as well as serum cardiac markers. The etiology of cardiovascular manifestations in severe scorpion sting is related to venom effect on sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal secretion of catecholamines as well as to the toxic effect of the venom on t

[The threat of snake and scorpion venoms].

Venoms of snakes and scorpions pose a significant threat to the health and life of humans. The speed and range of their actions causes damage of the organ responsible for the maintenance of vital signs. Venomous snake venoms cause blood clotting disorders, tissue necrosis and hemolysis, and the release of a number of proinflammatory cytokines and impair antibody synthesis. Availability of antitoxins is limited and in the most cases supportive treatment is recommended. In turn, the venom of scorpions beside intestinal symptoms cause significant impairment of neuromuscular conduction, causing se…

Emergent management of scorpion sting.

Scorpionism (syndrome of scorpion stings) is an important public health problem in many regions of the world, not only in tropics and subtropics. As scorpions may be unintentionally transported to any place in the world and keeping scorpions as pets is becoming more popular, scorpion stings occur also in Poland. Therefore, health professionals should have the knowledge on the management of scorpion stings. This article discusses a case who was stung by scorpion and proposes an algorithm of management with such patients.

Scorpion venoms, kidney and potassium.

Scorpion venoms cause renal injury by the interaction of renal ischemia due to intense renal vasoconstriction and inflammatory reactions due to proinflammatory cytokines and mediators. Renal vasoconstriction is not only induced by catecholamine storm but also by angiotensin II and the direct action of venom on vascular ion channels. Increased aldosterone also contributes to hypertension. Blocking of renal tubular K channels decreases renal K excretion and increases serum K level which increases aldosterone release. Hyperaldosteronism increases K excretion mostly through ROMK2 and ROMK3 unblock

Scorpion envenomation and antivenom therapy.

Scorpion envenomation is a dangerous and common global event that can result in a variety of toxic clinical effects. These are typically managed with supportive care or antivenom. Antivenom use is controversial because of conflicting evidence of effectiveness for adrenergic toxicity. However, both controlled and uncontrolled studies have shown that antivenom is effective in resolving neuromotor toxicity associated with envenomations by the scorpions of genus Centruroides.

Assembling an arsenal, the scorpion way.

BACKGROUND: For survival, scorpions depend on a wide array of short neurotoxic polypeptides. The venoms of scorpions from the most studied group, the Buthida, are a rich source of small, 23-78 amino acid-long peptides, well packed by either three or four disulfide bridges that affect ion channel function in excitable and non-excitable cells. RESULTS: In this work, by constructing a toxin transcripts data set from the venom gland of the scorpion Buthus occitanus israelis, we were able to follow the evolutionary path leading to mature toxin diversification and suggest a mechanism for leader pep…

[Envenomations VI. Scorpionism in Africa].

Scorpionism is a serious public health problem in North Africa, sub-Saharan countries, and South Africa. The number of species involved is small, but some have large geographic areas of distribution. Fatal outcomes sometimes occur in children and young adults. In most cases the only symptom after a scorpion sting is intense, persistent pain. Appearance of digestive symptoms within a few hours after the sting (5% of cases) is a sign of severe envenomation. These symptoms can be followed by pulmonary edema and cardiovascular manifestations (arrhythmia and hypotension). Early death can occur due
