Impaired anal sensation and early diabetic faecal incontinence.

Faecal incontinence develops in up to 20% of diabetic patients. To try to determine the relative contributions of sensory and motor neuropat … ormal control subjects (both p less than 0.001). There were no significant differences in the first sensation of fullness, maximum tolerated volume or percentage fall from resting pressure between the groups on inflation of the balloon. Elevation of the sensory threshold in the upper anal canal is an early abnormality in the development of diabetic faecal i …

Pathological gamblers are neither impulsive nor sensation-seekers.

Ten pathological gamblers, ten alcoholics, ten heroin addicts and twenty five non-patients were compared using Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS) and Barratt's Impulsivity Scale (BIS). The pathological gamblers did not differ from the non-patient group on either measure. Drug addicts scored significantly higher and alcoholics significantly lower than the pathological gamblers and the non-patient group on the SSS, while drug addicts scored significantly higher than the other groups on the BIS. The difficulties in defining impulsivity are discussed. It is suggested that the classification…

Referred Sensation Areas in Bilateral Upper Limb Amputee.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) following amputation considerably reduces the quality of life, given a difficult to treat pain of highly variate profile. The loss of sensory input induces a complex pattern of neuroplastic changes of the sensory neural pathways and their central projections. Referred sensation areas (RSAs) may occur on the stump as a consequence of amputation, providing a direct path towards the altered central sensory projections. Modulated electrical stimulation of RSAs was investigated in a long-term experiment in the case of a 62 years-old participant with bilateral upper limb ampu…

Advances in Optical Tools to Study Taste Sensation.

Taste sensation is the process of converting chemical identities in food into a neural code of the brain. Taste information is initially formed in the taste buds on the tongue, travels through the afferent gustatory nerves to the sensory ganglion neurons, and finally reaches the multiple taste centers of the brain. In the taste field, optical tools to observe cellular-level functions play a pivotal role in understanding how taste information is processed along a pathway. In this review, we introduce recent advances in the optical tools used to study the taste transduction pathways.

Uncoupling Sensation and Perception in Human Time Processing.

Timing emerges from a hierarchy of computations ranging from early encoding of physical duration (time sensation) to abstract time representations (time perception) suitable for storage and decisional processes. However, the neural basis of the perceptual experience of time remains elusive. To address this, we dissociate brain activity uniquely related to lower-level sensory and higher-order perceptual timing operations, using event-related fMRI. Participants compared subsecond (500 msec) sinusoidal gratings drifting with constant velocity (standard) against two probe stimuli: (1) control grat…

Effect of Midurethral Sling Surgery on Vaginal Sensation.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported changes in the sensory functioning of the vagina in women with pelvic floor disorder. AIM: To evaluate vaginal and clitoral sensation before and after surgery with trans-obturator tape (TVT-O, Ethicon Johnson & Johnson). METHODS: Quantitative sensory thresholds for warm, cold, and vibratory sensations were measured at the vagina and clitoris 1 day before and 12 ± 4 months after surgery. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Differences in thresholds to warm, cold, and vibratory sensations at a predetermined anatomic area of the genital region. RESULTS: Twenty-…

Observations relating to urinary sensation during detrusor overactivity.

AIMS: To describe the temporal relationship between increases in lower urinary tract (LUT) sensation and changes in detrusor and/or urethral pressures measured in real time. METHODS: We reviewed 33 multichannel urodynamic tracings that included a continuous recording of LUT sensation and that demonstrated detrusor overactivity incontinence (DOI) or detrusor overactivity (DO). Four physicians reviewed each urodynamic tracing and reached agreement about the temporal relationship between LUT sensation and detrusor contraction. RESULTS: Median age was 60 (36-82) years. Fourteen (42%) had urodyna…

Sensation and action during active and passive movement.

In order to determine the cause of active or passive sensation and action, we studied the effect of perception on gaze and posture control. Normal adults and a patient with bilateral labyrinthine loss underwent whole body rotation seated in a chair (120 degrees/s) or standing on a platform (60 degrees/s), while tilting their head with their vision normal or covered. Eye movements were recorded by a CCD video camera and body sways by a force platform. In normal subjects, gaze and posture became ataxic when head tilting with their vision covered, but they remained skilled under conditions of nor…

Age-related changes in pharyngeal and supraglottic sensation.

As one ages, sensory discrimination in the oral cavity progressively diminishes, and dysphagia and aspiration are more likely to occur. Whether similar age-related laryngeal and pharyngeal sensory abnormalities exist and contribute to dysphagia and aspiration is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine if sensory discrimination in the area innervated by the superior laryngeal nerve diminishes with increasing age. By applying a previously described new device and technique that utilizes brief air pulse stimulation of the anterior wall of the pyriform sinus, sensory discrimination can

Clustering Patients With Chronic Cough Using Reported Sensations and Triggers: Results from the Triggers and Sensations Provoking Coughing Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough (CC) is one of the most common symptoms reported to primary care and to respiratory outpatient clinics. The Triggers and Sensations Provoking Coughing (TOPIC) questionnaire is a 15-item questionnaire designed to capture sensations and triggers associated with CC in a fashion that discriminates between refractory CC (RCC) and other causes of CC. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Does a relationship exist between TOPIC questionnaire scores and other measures of cough in patients referred to 3 specialist cough clinics? Can patients with CC be clustered based on reported sensations an…

Hyperglycemic effects on limbs tingling and twisting sensations.

What Hyperglycemia Does to the Legs is quite devastating and ends with the tragic event of losing lower limbs. A patient with diabetic neuropathy (DN) may have both good and sensory loss. On the other hand, there are negative symptoms, including sensory loss and delayed wound healing the cues back up this negative out comes (Sensory nerves are essential for healing wounds because they help regulate the immune system and encourage the movement of cells, the creation of growth factors, and the reproduction

The anatomy, neurophysiology, and cellular mechanisms of intradental sensation.

Somatosensory innervation of the oral cavity enables the detection of a range of environmental stimuli including minute and noxious mechanical forces. The trigeminal sensory neurons underlie sensation originating from the tooth. Prior work has provided important physiological and molecular characterization of dental pulp sensory innervation. Clinical dental experiences have informed our conception of the consequence of activating these neurons. However, the biological role of sensory innervation within the tooth is yet to be defined. Recent transcriptomic data, combined with mouse genetic tool…

Neural dynamics of illusory tactile pulling sensations.

Directional tactile pulling sensations are integral to everyday life, but their neural mechanisms remain unknown. Prior accounts hold that primary somatosensory (SI) activity is sufficient to generate pulling sensations, with alternative proposals suggesting that amodal frontal or parietal regions may be critical. We combined high-density EEG with asymmetric vibration, which creates an illusory pulling sensation, thereby unconfounding pulling sensations from unrelated sensorimotor processes. Oddballs that created opposite direction pulls to common stimuli were compared to the same oddballs aft…
