[Treatments of urination disorders in children (vesico-sphincteral disorders other than enuresis)].

Disorders of urination are a frequent cause of consultation in paediatric urology units, even when enuresis is excluded. These disorders consist of frequencies, dysuria, urgencies, burning sensation at voiding and incontinence. Since their mechanisms are diverse, their treatment should be increasingly specific.

Improving dental visits for individuals with autism spectrum disorders through an understanding of sensory processing.

The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that dental practices will be seeing patients with this diagnosis more frequently. Although patients with ASD have similar dental needs to other patients, the symptoms of the disorder may influence the ability of dental practitioners to provide necessary care. Dental professionals may be unaware of the difficulties with sensory processing common to patients with ASD. However, awareness of sensory processing issues and knowledge of strategies to improve the sensory experience for individuals with ASD may improve dental visits

Self-Disgust within Eating Disordered Groups: Associations with Anxiety, Disgust Sensitivity and Sensory Processing.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between self-disgust and sensory processing within eating psychopathology. Five hundred and ninety-one women with a self-reported diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or who had no previous history of an eating disorder completed a battery of online questionnaires measuring disgust, emotion and sensory variables. Those with an eating disorder reported significantly higher rates of self-disgust than those with no history of disordered eating. In groups of women with self-reported bulimia, self-disgust was associated with sensation avoidance

Lump sensation in the throat caused by tumors in the preepiglottic space.

Lump sensation in the throat is a common symptom, which accounts for 4% of first patient visits to Otorhinolaryngologic clinics. The etiology includes abnormalities of the thyroid gland, cysts, tumors and chronic infections of the pharynx, larynx, esophagus and tongue base, gastroesophageal reflux and anxiety disorders. In this article we describe two rare cases of lump sensation caused by masses in the preepiglottic space and we stress the importance of thorough investigation to exclude any possible non functional causes.

Cooling the Skin: Understanding a Specific Cutaneous Thermosensation.

A patient recently presented with long-standing severe itching originating from lichen sclerosus et atrophicus at the vulva area. We successively treated her using a topical formulation of TRPM8 agonist which produces a cooling sensation. The cooling sensation, an afferent sensory perception in various skin neuronal pathways, could be a useful mechanism to relieve an itchy sensation in various skin disorders. Mechanoreceptors are related to touch vibration and pressure sensations and have a special morphology where the nerve endings are optimized to receive sensory inputs. However, unmyelinate

Defects in tongue papillae and taste sensation indicate a problem with neurotrophic support in various neurological diseases.

Neurotrophic support of developing neurons by neurotrophins is of critical importance in the development of fungiform papillae and taste buds. A number of neurological disorders show a decrease or increase in fungiform papillae or taste sensation. These can be grouped into disorders with reduced papillae (Machado-Joseph disease, Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome, familial dysautonomia, dystonia musculorum, and Behçet's disease) and those with taste defects only (Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV, and diabetes mellitus). In addition, Parkinson

Platelet MAO activity in personality disorders and normal controls.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been related to several psychiatric disorders and personality dimensions. The purpose of this study was to measure platelet MAO activity in personality disorders and determine its relationship to symptoms analogous to sensation seeking. Twenty-eight males admitted to a psychiatric unit with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of personality disorder were compared to normal controls. Patients with Axis I diagnoses other than adjustment disorder were excluded. There was no difference in MAO activity between patients and normals, although it was lower in borderline

Health anxiety and fear of fear in panic disorder and agoraphobia vs. social phobia: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: This study is aimed to evaluate the role of two vulnerability factors, health anxiety and fear of fear, in the prediction of the onset of panic disorder/agoraphobia (PDA) relative to a comparison anxiety disorder. METHODS: Young women, aged between 18 and 24 years, were investigated at baseline and, 17 months later, using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-Lifetime and measures of health anxiety and fear of bodily sensations (subscale disease phobia of the Whiteley Index, and total score of the Body Sensations Questionnaire). First, 22 women with current PDA were compared to

Phantom limb pain after lower limb trauma: origins and treatments.

Phantom sensations, that is, sensations perceived in a body part that has been lost, are a common consequence of accidental or clinical extremity amputations. Most amputation patients report a continuing presence of the limb, with some describing additional sensations such as numbness, tickling, or cramping of the phantom limb. The type, frequency, and stability of these phantom sensations can vary immensely. The phenomenon of painful phantom sensations, that is, phantom limb pain, presents a challenge for practitioners and researchers and is often detrimental to the patient's quality of life.

The Trigeminal (V) and Facial (VII) Cranial Nerves: Head and Face Sensation and Movement.

There are close functional and anatomical relationships between cranial nerves V and VII in both their sensory and motor divisions. Sensation on the face is innervated by the trigeminal nerves (V) as are the muscles of mastication, but the muscles of facial expression are innervated mainly by the facial nerve (VII) as is the sensation of taste. This article briefly reviews the anatomy of these cranial nerves, disorders of these nerves that are of particular importance to psychiatry, and some considerations for differential diagnosis.

Premonitory urges and other sensory phenomena in primary tic disorders.

Premonitory sensations, or urges, have become a central focus in the study of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS). These bodily sensations, which precede tics, play a crucial role in the clinical manifestations of the syndrome. Tics are often performed to alleviate the discomfort caused by premonitory urges and provide temporary relief. Despite their importance, the causes and mechanisms of premonitory urges remain poorly understood. The severity of tics and an individual's ability to control them are closely related to the intensity and presence of these urges. Current research is actively in

Migraine as an allostatic reset triggered by unresolved interoceptive prediction errors.

Until now, a satisfying account of the cause and purpose of migraine has remained elusive. We explain migraine within the frameworks of allostasis (the situationally-flexible, forward-looking equivalent of homeostasis) and active inference (interacting with the environment via internally-generated predictions). Due to its multimodality, and long timescales between cause and effect, allostasis is inherently prone to catastrophic error, which might be impossible to correct once fully manifest, an early indicator which is elevated prediction error (discrepancy between prediction and sensory input

Neuropsychiatric factors in sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin is a syndrome defined by the occurrence of unpleasant sensations (stinging, burning, pain, pruritus, and tingling sensations) in response to stimuli that normally should not provoke such sensations. The worldwide prevalence of sensitive skin is approximately 40%. Clinical, histologic, biochemical, and therapeutic data show that this condition is related to changes in epidermal nerve endings with subsequent hyperreactivity and neurogenic inflammation; hence, sensitive skin is not a psychosomatic disorder, although psychologic consequences are possible.

Multimodal mapping of balance dysfunction in Parkinson's disease: a consensus roadmap for research and intervention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Balance depends on accurate perception of self-motion and verticality and on multisensory integration for stance, and gait. In Parkinson's disease, balance is commonly impaired and variably affected by treatment. Although vestibular and multisensory contributions are increasingly recognized, progress is limited by fragmented evidence, inconsistent methods, and artifact-prone measures. We provide a consensus roadmap across four domains - video-oculography/vHIT, VEMPs, posturography, and perceptual paradigms - to improve clinical translation of balance research in Parkinson's

Sensory Dysfunction, Microbial Infections, and Host Responses in Alzheimer's Disease.

Sensory functions of organs of the head and neck allow humans to interact with the environment and establish social bonds. With aging, smell, taste, vision, and hearing decline. Evidence suggests that accelerated impairment in sensory abilities can reflect a shift from healthy to pathological aging, including the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurological disorders. While the drivers of early sensory alteration in AD are not elucidated, insults such as trauma and infections can affect sensory function. Herein, we review the involvement of the major head and neck sensory sys

Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder and the serotonergic system: a comprehensive review including new MDMA-related clinical cases.

Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD) is a drug-induced condition associated with inaccurate visual representations. Since the underlying mechanism(s) are largely unknown, this review aims to uncover aspects underlying its etiology. Available evidence on HPPD and drug-related altered visual processing was reviewed and the majority of HPPD cases were attributed to drugs with agonistic effects on serotonergic 5-HT₂A receptors. Moreover, we present 31 new HPPD cases that link HPPD to the use of ecstasy (MDMA), which is known to reverse serotonin reuptake and acts as agonist on 5-HT₂A

Cutaneous sensory disorder.

Cutaneous sensory disorder (CSD) represents a heterogeneous clinical situation where the patient presents with either disagreeable skin sensations (ie, itching, burning, stinging) or pain (ie, allodynia) and/or negative sensory symptoms (ie, numbness, hypoaesthesia). These patients have no apparent diagnosable dermatologic or medical condition that explains the cutaneous symptom, and typically have negative findings upon medical workup. Skin regions that normally have a greater density of epidermal innervation tend to be more susceptible to the development of CSD. CSDs can affect any body regi
