Taking into account the literature reports on the involvement of prolactin (PRL) in the regulation of immunity against Toxoplasma gondii, we decided to check whether this parasite has the ability to bind the lactotrophic hormone. CASE HISTORY: A skeletal disease characterised by dwarfism, limb deformity and sometimes sudden death occurred over a period of 5 years in lambs born on a commercial sheep farm in Southland. The disease showed variable expression and occurred in crossbred sheep. A genetic aetiology was supported by the birth of affected lambs over two seasons in a flock of putative carrier and affected sheep transported to Massey University.

Seven sheep were sedated 3 times: with medetomidine (15 micrograms kg-1), with midazolam (0.1 mg kg-1) and with a combination of the drugs. All drugs were administered intravenously. The clinical findings, the autopsy and the histology of functional pyloric stenosis in three sheep between four and eight years old are described. The cases of three sheep showing symptoms associated with impaired locomotion are reported. The patients were affected with listeriosis, hypocalcaemia and visna respectively. The diagnosis of these forms of disease in veterinary practice is particularly stressed. A detailed history and an adequate clinical examination, possibly supplemented by laboratory studies may often result in a correct diagnosis and satisfactory treatment.

Various cyanide antidotes were evaluated by comparing the effects of delay in time of therapy following oral administration of sodium cyanide in sheep. Successful therapy of lethal doses of sodium cyanide could be accomplished with the more potent antidotes for up to 30 minutes following administration of sodium cyanide. Either 660 mg/kg sodium thiosulfate or 1 mg/kg p-aminopropriophenone were effective antidotes for moderate lethal doses (7.6 mg/kg) of sodium cyanide. Twenty-seven sheep were assigned to three groups in order to study acute urea toxicity. Groups I, II and III were dosed with 0.5, 0.6 annd 0.75 g/kg of urea, respectively. The mean survival times were 165, 109 and 60 minutes, respectively.
