HYPOTHESIS: Proximal humeral fractures involving the dominant arm are not predisposed to worsen the functional outcome and the quality of life compared with proximal humeral fractures of the nondominant arm.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study including 179 consecutive proximal humeral fractures divided into 2 groups: fractures involving the dominant arm (n = 97) and fractures involving the nondominant arm (n = 82). Both groups were prospectively assessed for 2 years, and at the end of the follow-up, all patients underwent functional assessment by Constant score and quality of life assess

Posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation is a rare and often misdiagnosed injury leading to locked chronic dislocation and complicated management. Surgical management options vary based on chronicity, defect size, and patient-specific factors, with the modified McLaughlin procedure being a joint-preserving option for younger patients with large defects. We present a case of a 31-year-old male who had a missed locked posterior shoulder fracture-dislocation with a large reverse Hill-Sachs lesion, healed non-displaced proximal humerus fractures for >10 months following an electrical shock and fall

We report on a singular case of a unique form of post-traumatic reversal of the humeral head after humeral neck fracture, in which the pattern of collapse resulted in the formation of a native reverse polarity shoulder. In essence, the humeral head became a socket, and the glenoid rounded to become a head with well-preserved shoulder function. To our knowledge, this is the first case of an acquired shoulder deformity that bears a remarkable functional similarity to a prosthetic reverse polarity shoulder replacement.

Bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulder is an uncommon injury pattern usually caused by epileptic seizures. The cause of the seizure activity remains unknown in most cases, although the injury has been associated with several conditions. A 59-year-old man with uncontrolled hypertension presented with new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures. He was diagnosed with uremic encephalopathy and bilateral posterior fracture-dislocation of his shoulders. His medical condition required stabilization leading to a delay in definitive surgery and a subsequent poor outcome. This case hi

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of unrecognized glenoid fracture in opposite shoulders with symptomatic anterior instability.
METHODS: Participants were 38 patients, who had complaints of instability on only one side (symptomatic shoulder) and had no complaints despite of a glenoid fracture on the other shoulder (asymptomatic shoulder) from 2011 to 2020. Factors that could influence the onset of symptoms including glenoid rim morphology were retrospectively investigated.
RESULTS: Among the asymptomatic shoulders, 16 had a single traumatic e

INTRODUCTION: A bilateral shoulder dislocation is an extremely rare injury with only a few reported cases in English literature, and most of these cases have occurred following a seizure episode or an electric shock. We present the first ever reported case of simultaneous bilateral anterior and posterior fracture dislocation of shoulders and its unique mechanism of injury in a 48 year old diabetic male.
CASE REPORT: A 48 year old male presented to our emergency department with pain and restriction of movements involving both shoulders following a fall. The patient was standing by the side of

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
BACKGROUND: Scapular fractures are uncommon, and displaced glenoid fractures are even rarer. Surgery is usually performed for severely displaced fractures and positive outcomes have been reported, although some patients have residual limitations. Published rehabilitation guidelines are limited. The purpose of this case report is to describe the physical therapy (PT) rehabilitation of a patient with a complicated scapular fracture, and to describe factors influencing his outcome.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Exercise, manual therapy, and modalities were used in the rehabilitat

AIM: Results of shoulder replacement in fracture sequelae are not satisfying. This is due to an insufficient function of the rotator cuff, mostly because of a secondary necrosis of the tubercles. The aim of this study was to investigate if the differentiated use of anatomic and reversed prostheses in dependence of the preoperative anatomic situation is able to optimise the results.
METHOD: The aim of this study was a comparison of 55 patients with secondary trauma prostheses in fracture sequelae. In 36 cases (especially fracture sequelae types 1 and 2 according to Boileau), anatomic head pros

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role, the difficulties of rehabilitation and to diagnose the eventual surgical complications after shoulder prosthesis for 4-part fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty three patients (46 shoulders) who underwent shoulder arthroplasty after fracture of the proximal humerus underwent rehabilitation and follow-up at a special reeducation center for an average of 3 months (1 to 6). There were 42 four-part fractures (with 22 fracture-dislocation) and 4 three-part fractures. The patients were send by five different hospitals and have all been operated by senior surgeons. T

Seventy-three shoulders (66 patients) with posterior fracture-dislocation of the shoulder were treated. Thirty patients were treated during the acute phase. One case was classified as subspinous, and 56 were considered subacromial; 4 cases had posterior fracture-dislocation in three parts, 3 in four parts, and 9 at the anatomic neck. Treatment consisted of closed reduction and immobilization in the emergency department, McLaughlin's procedure, hemiarthroplasty, total shoulder, open reduction with internal fixation, arthroplastic resection, and arthrodesis. Ten shoulders were treated conservati

We report seven cases in which open or closed reduction of a shoulder dislocation associated with a fracture of the humeral neck led to displacement of the neck fracture. Avascular necrosis of the humeral head developed in all six patients with anatomical neck fractures. All five anterior dislocations also had a fracture of the greater tuberosity and both posterior dislocations had a fracture of the lesser tuberosity. The neck fracture had not initially been recognised in three of the seven cases. In five cases attempted shoulder reduction led to complete displacement of the head segment, whic

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical outcomes of hemi-shoulder arthroplasty (HSA) versus reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) following failed plate osteosynthesis of proximal humerus fractures in elderly patients.
METHODS: This retrospective study identified all patients that had a documented failed plate osteosynthesis of proximal humeral fractures treated with revision HSA or RTSA. Follow-up occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery and every year thereafter. The primary outcomes were the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) scores, Simple Shoulder Test (SST) scores, visual

Glenoid bone loss associated with abnormal glenoid morphology can be encountered in complex primary and revision reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Strategies to deal with this include allografts, augments and custom-made prostheses. We describe a unique case of a long-standing neglected posterior fracture dislocation of the shoulder with severe glenoid bone loss and retroversion. The patient also had malunited acromial and scapula fractures and an associated rotator cuff tear. The primary challenges were access to the shoulder joint due to the malunited fractures, reconstruction of the dysplastic

This report is a case of a healed proximal intertrochanteric femur fracture nonunion in an ancient Nubian adult female, approximately 58 years old at the time of death, from the Tombos archaeological site in present day northern Sudan. Tombos was founded as an Egyptian colonial town during the New Kingdom Period (14001070 BC). The individual was radiocarbon dated to 1114-910 BC and also exhibited healed fractures of the left proximal humerus and ribs. There was shortening and mild atrophy of the right femur compared to the left; radiographs demonstrated a varus deformity of the proximal femur

BACKGROUND: Stress acromial fractures (AF) and scapular spine fractures (SSF) are rare but challenging complications of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA). The purpose of our study was to identify risk factors of AF and SSF after rTSA through a detailed systematic review of published literature.
METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to October 2023. We included all peer-reviewed studies investigating the risk of AF and SSF after rTSA, excluding biomechanical studies. A total of 1,047 publications were reviewed

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous bilateral fractures of the proximal humerus are infrequent, and simultaneous bilateral three- or four-part fractures are even rarer. Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is being used increasingly for the treatment of three- and four-part fractures of the proximal humerus. However, treatment of simultaneous bilateral fractures of the proximal humerus is difficult because of concern about postoperative immobilization and rehabilitation. Case Presentation. A 75-year-old woman presented with bilateral shoulder pain subsequent to a fall on the street. Physical examination
