23 patients who had used silver sulfadiazine cream were patch tested. No reactions to the active principle occurred but 2 vehicle components, cetyl alcohol and propylene glycol, were positive. No sulfonamide-sensitive subject reacted to silver sulfadiazine. There is no evidence that silver sulfadiazine has a contact sensitizing potential or that it is contra-indicated for patients with a history of sulfonamide hypersensitivity.

Thirty-six former workers in a silver-reclaiming facility who had been exposed over a long-term to excessive levels of cyanide were studied to determine acute and residual toxic reactions. Since the initial report by Silver et al (1953), more than 50 examples of the Russell-Silver syndrome have been reported. Unilateral congenital asymmetry of the extremities has been considered one of the major features of this disorder (Silver, 1964). We recently observed a child with otherwise typical features of the Russell-Silver syndrome who had enlargement of the right hand and of the left lower extremity. We know of no other recorded example of crossed asymmetry in this clinical entity.

Russell Silver syndrome (RSS) is a genetic disorder of unknown aetiology. The disorder is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, and various modes of inheritance and genetic abnormalities have been described. A large number of clinical features are associated with this condition. Growth retardation, typical facies, limb asymmetry, delayed bony growth and clinodactyly are some of the most constant features of RSS. We report a small series of patients presenting with a range of hand anomalies, some of which have not been previously reported in association with this condition.

The musculoskeletal manifestations of Russell-Silver syndrome were studied in 25 patients. An unusual case of silver cone disintegration associated with progressive root resorption is reported. The use of the scanning electron microscope and the electron microprobe provided evidence of different states of corrosion in two remaining silver cones. Light microscopic examination showed the presence of silver particles apparently released from the disintegrated or progressively corroded cones in the surrounding tissues. The possible interaction between such silver accumulations or their chemical combinations with other elements and the tissue is discussed.

We describe a case of Russell-Silver syndrome associated with horseshoe kidney in a three-year-eleven-month-old boy. Several urologic anomalies are reported in this syndrome, but to our knowledge, horseshoe kidney has not been reported previously in the English literature.
