Energy cost of different skating techniques in cross-country skiing.

The aims of this study were to compare the aerobic energy cost of four 'on-snow' skating techniques in cross-country skiing and to examine the relationships between performance and aerobic energy cost. Twelve male skiers from recreational to national standard performed four level skating trials of 6 min duration in random order, each at the same submaximal velocity but with a different skating technique: (1) 'offset' (V1), using a double asymmetrical and asynchronous pole plant as weight is transferred to one ski; (2) 'two-skate' (V2A), where the pole plant is symmetrical; (3) 'one-skate' (V2)…

Effect of drafting on heart rate in cross-country skiing.

The purpose of this study was to compare the heart rate responses during cross-country skiing as a leading skier, as well as in a drafting situation, 2 m behind the leader. Six male cross-country ski racers, paired for VO2max skied a 2-km course (two loops of 1 km) using the skating techniques at a fixed speed (5.6 m.s-1) on two different occasions, once as a leading skier, the other as a drafter. A recovery period of 30 min was allowed between the two trials. Heart rates (HR) were monitored every 5 s during all performances. Capillary blood lactate concentrations were taken before and at 5 mi…

In-line skating: physiological responses and comparison with roller skiing.

The use of in-line skates has become popular in recent years for recreational and conditioning purposes. This investigation evaluated the ph … some training environments. Comparison of the present data with previously published data on roller skiing demonstrates that differences in physiological responses for the two modes of exercise are the result of differences in rolling resistances between the devices. Measurements of rolling resistance and comparison of the oxygen uptake requirements for …

Propulsive and gliding phases in four cross-country skiing techniques.

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative durations of the propulsive and gliding phases between three skating techniques (1-skate, 2-skate, and offset) and the diagonal stride technique in elite cross-country skiers. Nine skiers of provincial and national level were videotaped with a Panasonic AG 170 camera. The camera speed was set at 30 frames.s-1 and the shutter speed at 1/500 s. The athletes were asked to ski at approximately 80% of their maximal skiing speed on a flat (50 m long) and on an uphill course (35 m long, 5 degrees grade). The relative propulsive phases of the skati…

Fractures of the tibial shaft after skiing and other accidents.

Fractures of the tibial shaft from skiing accidents were compared with fractures of other etiology. Skiing fractures more often affected the lower third of the tibia and they seldom were open. Many were comminuted or transverse but displacement tended to be slight. The incidence of complications was low and the periods of hospitalization, of healing, and of inability to work were shorter than for the other fractures. The highly favorable prognosis was evident whatever the method used for treatment. Methods of treatment of tibial fractures should not be compared on the basis of experience with …

Papillomatosis cutis lymphostatica and 'Ski-Jump' nails.

Papillomatosis cutis lymphostatica is an uncommon condition usually associated with lymphedema. "Ski-jump" nails are upward sloping concave nails that can be an important diagnostic sign which may be overlooked in the setting of lymphedema. A diagnosis of papillomatosis cutis lymphostatica should be suspected in patients presenting with persistent, bland papilliform plaques, supported by the additional presence of "ski-jump" nails.

Injuries arising from ski-lift malfunction are rare. Most arise from skier error when embarking or disembarking, or from improper lift opera … spitalised cases of injury arising from ski-lifts. 44 cases were identified representing 2% of snow-skiing/snowboarding cases. 28 cases (64%) were male and 16 (36%) female, the average age was 32 yrs (range 5-73 yrs). The majority of cases were snow-skiers (35 cases, 80%). Most of the injuries were serious, or potentially so, with 1 case of traumatic pne …

Vaginal laceration following a jet-ski accident.

A 17-year-old woman riding as a passenger on a jet-ski fell behind the jet nozzle while jumping waves. A vaginal laceration with intra-abdominal extension occurred as a result of the accident. Hypogastric artery ligation controlled the hemorrhage and avoided more extensive surgery. The case represents an unusual injury from this type of watercraft and illustrates important points in the management of genital tract trauma.

Evolutions in the physiology of skiing, skating and running in the Olympics.

Cross-country skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, and speed skating (12+11+3+8+14=48 events), i.e. five of the 15 disciplines in the 2018 Winter Olympics, require participants to reach the finish line in minimum time, while exerting mechanical propulsion power through flat terrain, uphill, and downhill. This article compares distances and times for these disciplines systematically with each other and with running, walking, and swimming in the Summer Olympics. Regarding physiological implications, the absence of distances below 6 km in biathlon, 5 km in Nordic combined…

Adult hand injuries on artificial ski slopes.

Artificial ski slope skiing is a popular sport in Great Britain with significant risk of injury. We reviewed 36 patients who had been treated for hand injuries excluding the wrist in our plastic surgery department over a 14-month period after skiing on an artificial ski slope. Specifically, they were 15 fractures of the digits, 3 dislocations of the finger joints, 7 ulnar collateral ligament injuries of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb, and 11 bruises and abrasions. The mean age of the patients was 28 years, and there were 20 men and 16 women. It is concluded that the hardness of the…

Neuromuscular fatigue after a ski skating marathon.

The aim of this study was to characterize neuromuscular fatigue in knee extensor muscles after a marathon skiing race (mean +/- SD duration = 159.7 +/- 17.9 min). During the 2 days preceding the event and immediately after, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 11 trained skiers. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine maximal voluntary activation (% VA). EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. MVC decreased with fatigue from 171.7 +/- …

Alpine ski bindings and injuries. Current findings.

In spite of the fact that the overall incidence of alpine ski injuries has decreased during the last 25 years, the incidence of serious knee sprains usually involving the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has risen dramatically since the late 1970s. This trend runs counter to a dramatic reduction in lower leg injuries that began in the early 1970s and to date has lowered the risk of injury below the knee by almost 90%. One of the primary design objectives of modern ski boots and bindings has been to protect the skier from tibia and ankle fractures. So, in that sense, they have done an excellent

Limited effect of load reduction by changing the ski characteristics on the anterior cruciate ligament in the slip-catch injury mechanism in alpine skiing.

In competitive alpine skiers, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is the most common and severe injury, and the slip-catch mechanism is … ch mechanism. Forward dynamic simulations were conducted incorporating the kinematics of the actual skiing motions measured in the experiment. The actual skiing motion was measured under four different conditions with inertial sensors, which differed in ski type, course settings, and skier's level. The ski parameters used in the simulation were obtained …
