Skull fractures in children: their assessment in relation to developmental skull changes and acute intracranial hematomas.

Retrospective analysis of 12,072 pediatric head injury cases revealed 1,297 skull fractures. Patients with skull fractures were divided into four age groups according to the fusion of skull sutures and other developmental radiological skull changes. Results revealed that the patients with open skull sutures (aged less than 2 years) and with linear skull fractures alone had a negligible chance of developing intracranial hematomas. With the fusion of metopic and mendosal sutures associated with other skull changes (greater than 2 years), the children became progressively more susceptible to deve

Morphological study on the skull sutures and their relationships to skull morphology in young camels (Camelus dromedarius).

OBJECTIVE: The sutures are associated with anatomical and physiological differences in skull camels. There is a deficiency in the information regarding the anatomy of dromedary camels, especially on fibrous joints (sutures) of the camels' skull. AIM: The goal of this work was to give a detailed gross anatomical and radiographic description of the sutures in the camels' skull. This description may be of great importance for veterinarians to differentiate between the suture and the fracture of the head in the radiographic photos. METHODS: The current study was conducted on 10 skulls of the you

Thinning of Calvarial Bone by Skull Growth in a Pediatric Patient After Skull Grinding Injury.

Several treatment options have been suggested for the treatment of scalp defects that occur following head trauma. Growth changes should be considered, especially for children. The authors report a case of delayed cranial bone absorption after successful free latissimus dorsi flap coverage following skull grinding injury in a pediatric patient.A 3-year-old patient was referred to the reconstructive surgery department because of a 7 × 8 cm-sized scalp defect in the temporoparietal area due to dragging and grinding injury. Debridement and free latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap coverage with

Two cases of primary osteolytic intraosseous meningioma of the skull metastasizing to whole skull and the spine.

We report here two cases of primary intraosseous meningioma with aggressive behavior. A 68-year-old man presented with a one year history of a soft, enlarging mass in the right parietal region. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) revealed a 6 cm sized, heterogeneously-enhancing, bony expansile mass in the right parietal bone, and computed tomograph (CT) showed a bony, destructive lesion. The tumor, including the surrounding normal bone, was totally resected. Dural invasion was not apparent. Diagnosis was atypical meningioma, which extensively metastasized within the skull one year later. A 74-year-

Sarcoidosis presenting as an osteolytic skull lesion: a case report and review of literature on skull sarcoidosis.

Bone sarcoidosis of the skull is an infrequent presentation of sarcoidosis. We describe a 51-year-old man who consulted due to inflammatory-appearing nodulation in the right supraorbital region. Images showed a solitary osteolytic lesion extending to soft tissues with increased scintigraphic uptake. The anatomopathological study revealed the presence of non-caseating epithelioid granulomas, compatible with sarcoidosis. Steroid treatment led to a marked remission of the lesion, without evidence of relapse during a follow-up period of 1 year. The literature dealing with skull sarcoidosis is revi

Computed tomography in the study of the development of the skull base: 2. Anencephaly, the aberrant skull form.

The application of various radiographic modalities in the analysis of the paradigm aberrant skull of anencephalics is reported. Again, we found high resolution CT to be the most valuable modality. A detailed description of the skull base changes in anencephaly is presented, and the appropriate embryologic explanation is offered.

Modern endoscopic skull base neurosurgery.

INTRODUCTION: Since the early use of the endoscopic view for treating simple intrasellar pituitary adenomas, the skull base surgery has experienced an unprecedented revolution elevating the treatment of skull base lesions to the next level in proficiency and excellence of care. METHODS: We have reviewed the preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the use of the endoscope in the treatment of skull base lesions. In this article, we aim to discuss and provide a wide view of the current indications and future perspectives of the endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEA) and of the endoscopic tra

Diagnosis of Skull Base Osteomyelitis.

Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is an infection of the temporal, sphenoid, or occipital bone that can be a challenge to diagnose because of its nonspecific symptoms, long clinical course, and radiologic findings that mimic those of other entities. The authors review this unusual infection on the basis of six proven cases. The diagnosis of SBO should be made according to four points: a high index of clinical suspicion, radiologic evidence of infection, repeated biopsies that are negative for malignancy, and positive results of microbiologic tests. SBO typically manifests clinically in patients w

ICAR: endoscopic skull-base surgery.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic skull-base surgery (ESBS) is employed in the management of diverse skull-base pathologies. Paralleling the increased utilization of ESBS, the literature in this field has expanded rapidly. However, the rarity of these diseases, the inherent challenges of surgical studies, and the continued learning curve in ESBS have resulted in significant variability in the quality of the literature. To consolidate and critically appraise the available literature, experts in skull-base surgery have produced the International Consensus Statement on Endoscopic Skull-Base Surgery (ICAR:ES

Imaging of skull base lesions.

Skull base imaging requires a thorough knowledge of the complex anatomy of this region, including the numerous fissures and foramina and the major neurovascular structures that traverse them. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) play complementary roles in imaging of the skull base. MR is the preferred modality for evaluation of the soft tissues, the cranial nerves, and the medullary spaces of bone, while CT is preferred for demonstrating thin cortical bone structure. The anatomic location and origin of a lesion as well as the specific CT and MR findings can often narr

Skull fracture mimicking eosinophilic granuloma.

BACKGROUND: Delayed swelling after skull fractures is an uncommon complication following head trauma in children. Classically, growing skull fractures typically present in patients under 3 years of age with progressive subcutaneous fluid collections, or occasionally with neurologic symptoms. We present the case of a healthy 2-year-old boy with a lytic "punched-out" frontal skull lesion. The child presented 2 months after a minor forehead injury for which no medical attention was sought. METHODS: The skull defect had no associated leptomeningeal cyst or brain herniation. Imaging and presentati

Skull base development and craniosynostosis.

Abnormal skull shape resulting in craniofacial deformity is a relatively common clinical finding, with deformity either positional (positional plagiocephaly) or related to premature ossification and fusion of the skull sutures (craniosynostosis). Growth restriction occurring at a stenosed suture is associated with exaggerated growth at the open sutures, resulting in fairly predictable craniofacial phenotypes in single-suture non-syndromic pathologies. Multi-suture syndromic subtypes are not so easy to understand without imaging. Imaging is performed to define the site and extent of craniosynos

Skull base lesions: extracranial origins.

A number of extracranial anatomical sites, including the nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, and masticator space, may give rise to lesions involving the skull base. Implicit in the nature of an invasive lesion, the majority of these lesions are malignant. Accordingly, for optimal patient outcomes and treatment planning, it is imperative to include a search pattern for extracranial sites and to assess accurately the character and extent of these diverse lesions. Of particular importance to radiologists are lesions arising from each extracranial site, the search patterns, and relevant information i

Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery.

Skull base surgery has been transformed by the development of endoscopic techniques. Endoscopic procedures were first used for pituitary surgery and were then gradually extended to other regions. A wide range of diseases are now accessible to endoscopic skull base surgery. The major advantage of the endoscopic endonasal approach is that it provides direct anatomical access to a large number of intracranial and paranasal sinus lesions, avoiding the sequelae of a skin incision, facial bone flap or craniotomy, and brain retraction, which is inevitable with conventional neurosurgical incisions, re
