Vaginal delivery is accomplished by the force of the labor overcoming the resistance forces of birth canal. During this process, the fetal head passes through the birth canal and the skull receives pressure on the lateral aspect, resulting in molding, the convex shaping of the cranium. Also, the infant's skull is compressed by the mother's pelvic bony structures. These forces may lead to skull fractures and brain injuries. The hypothesis by the authors is that many skull fractures of the newborn present as incomplete fractures. The bony skull of the newborn is histologically primary bone tissu…

Congenital depressed skull fracture is rare and in most cases its etiology remains unclear. We present a female newborn infant with a congenital depressed skull fracture and no evidence of antepartum or intrapartum traumatism. The baby had normal neurological status and the depressed fracture healed spontaneously in a few weeks. Based on our experience of this case and a literature review, we conclude that congenital depressed skull fractures should be managed conservatively if the skull depression is less than 2cm, there is no previous trauma, no local edema or hematoma, and if the neonate sh…

We report the rare presentation of Menkes disease with a congenital skull fracture, intracerebral bleeding, and seizures. The diagnosis was made at 3 months of age based on the characteristic features of the syndrome, by which time the child experienced uncontrollable seizures. Following progressive neurodegeneration, death occurred at 3 years of age. The prognosis in Menkes disease is dependent on early copper-histidine therapy. Effective treatment has led to children surviving into adulthood. Diagnosing the syndrome during the neonatal period is difficult. There are no published reports of c

A great majority of growing skull fractures occur in infancy and earlychildhood. Since the growth of brain is necessary as a driving force for these lesions to occur, almost all reported cases have been before the first 3 years of life. Although a number of uncommon locations, such as basiooccipital and skull base areas, have been reported, they are commonly located on calvaria. The authors report a growing skull fracture on the orbital roof in a 16-year-old female admitted to hospital with complaints of headache and seizures. She had had an orbital trauma 8 years before. CT scan revealed a hy…

The authors studied computed tomographic (CT) scans obtained in 40 patients with transsphenoid basilar skull fractures to establish if there were reproducible patterns of fracture along lines of weakness. Medical records were reviewed. Four major fracture patterns were identified: anterior transverse (n = 22), lateral frontal diagonal (n = 7), posterior transverse (n = 16), and mastoid diagonal (n = 3). Eight patients had two fracture patterns. Eleven of 40 patients (28%) died as a result of their head injury. The diagonal patterns were statistically significantly more frequently associated wi…

The details are reviewed of 50 children who were treated over a 10-year period with clinical signs of fractured base of skull. Two patients died early without signs of sepsis--due to the severity of their head injuries. Of the remainder, 23 received antibiotic prophylaxis and 25 did not. One patient from each of these groups developed pneumococcal meningitis, and they were successfully treated. Our results correlate well with those previously published, confirming the low incidence of infective complications with or without prophylaxis. The need to assemble a large enough series to make statis

This is a case report of a fetal skull fracture that resulted in fetal death caused by a high-velocity automobile accident. As a 25-year old gravida 3, para 2, was pulling out of a driveway onto a highway, her car was struck in the left front end by a car traveling perpendicular to her vehicle. She died almost instantly from shock caused by massive injuries and internal hemorrhage. She had a fractured rib and multiple fractures of the pelvis as well as bilateral hemothorax and ruptured splenic and renal vessels. The fetus had depressed multiple skull fractures. The probable mechanism of fetal …

INTRODUCTION: The growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication seen after head injury in infants and young children. It occurs due to a wide skull defect with underlying dural defect and changes in pressure gradients within skull cavity. Neglected cases may develop progressive neurological deficits and complications after second head trauma. Case Discussion: We present a 14-year-old child who developed sudden-onset, diffuse, soft, fluctuant, circumferential swelling of the head after a road traffic accident. He had sustained a head injury at the age of 3-months leading to an asymptomati

Skull fractures and cephalhematoma in newborns belong to the group of birth injuries of the head and neck, accounting for 11.4 to 15% of the total number of birth injuries. We presented a fracture of the parietal bones in a newborn, associated with parietal cephalhematoma. The newborn had transient and mild neurological symptoms: vomiting and changes in muscle tone. Clinical examination confirmed a positive "ping-pong" phenomen, craniogram confirmed the fracture of parietal bones and shown cephalhematoma, as well as ultrasound (US) examinations of the brain showed peri-interventricular bleedin…

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG2000) 30:1 and 60:1 lossy compression on the … :1 lossy and lossless compression.
CONCLUSION: JPEG2000 60:1 compression degrades the detection of skull fractures significantly while increasing the confidence with which readers rate fractures compared with 30:1 lossy and lossless compression. JPEG2000 30:1 lossy compression does not significantly change performance when compared to JPEG2000 lossless for the d …

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fractures are rare complications of head injury in young children. Till date, growing skull fractures due to an underlying arrested hydrocephalus or subdural hygroma have not been reported. We are reporting two such rare cases.
DISCUSSION: A 12-year-old male who was a known case of arrested hydrocephalus sustained a mild head injury and was found to have a linear fracture. One month after the initial injury, a soft swelling was noted in the parietal region. Investigations revealed the dilated ventricular system communicating through a growing skull fracture with a …

BACKGROUND: Growing skull fracture (GSF) is a rare complication of pediatric skull fractures and causes delayed-onset neurological deficits and cranial asymmetry. Early treatment is pivotal to prevent those complications. The aim of this study is to highlight the early diagnosis and treatment of GSFs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2000 and June 2013; 6,916 children with linear fracture were treated in three separate hospitals. Inclusion criteria were: Patients who were diagnosed and treated within 30 days and had one or more following features: (a) 3 years or less age with cephalohem…
