Spontaneous intranasal tumours in rabbits: 7 cases (2007-2019).

OBJECTIVES: Neoplasms that arise in the nasal cavity are reported infrequently in rabbits. This case series aims to review and determine the clinical behaviour of neoplasms in the nasal cavity in rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on seven pet rabbits diagnosed with intranasal tumours to describe the clinical and histopathological findings and prognoses after surgery and/or radiotherapy. RESULTS: The most common clinical signs were nasal snoring when breathing, nasal discharge, and subsequent dyspnoea and anorexia. Six different histopathological types of tum

[The experience with the surgical treatment of glomus tumours].

INTRODUCTION: glomus tumours of the temporal bones rank second after neurinomas of the VII-th pair of cranial nerves among the pathological conditions that are likely to cause hearing mpairment. Being extensively vascularized locally invasive neoplasms, glomus tumours constitute a serious challenge for the surgeon because of their localization in the vicinity of the vitally important vascular and neural structures of the lateral skull base. AIM: To characterize some peculiar features of the surgical interventions and postoperative management of the patients presenting with different types of

Intracranial Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Skull Base: 2 Cases and Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial solitary fibrous tumors (ISFTs) are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin that originate from the meninges. ISFTs of the skull base can be challenging to treat, as resection can be complicated by skull base anatomy. We present 2 cases of ISFT, the first manifesting with compressive cranial neuropathy from Meckel cave involvement and the second a posterior fossa lesion causing symptomatic hydrocephalus. METHODS: A systematic review was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The PubMed database was queried wi

Maffucci syndrome and intracranial chondrosarcomas: a case report featuring spontaneous resolution of sixth nerve palsy.

Maffucci syndrome is a rare disease process characterized by enchondromatosis with cutaneous hemangiomatosis. We report a 20-year-old woman with Maffucci syndrome with a 5-day history of diplopia. She was found to have a left sixth nerve palsy due to a parasellar chondrosarcoma. Three weeks later, the patient's diplopia spontaneously resolved. This unusual clinical course prompted us to review frequency of sixth nerve palsy with skull base neoplasms and the phenomenon of spontaneous resolution of diplopia.

Osteoradionecrosis of the ossicular chain.

Osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone is a well-known sequela of radiotherapy for neoplasms at the base of the skull. Presenting symptoms include otalgia, chronic aural drainage, and hearing loss, which can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. The conductive component has been hypothesized to be caused by radionecrosis of the ossicular chain. This case report documents the existence of osteoradionecrosis of the ossicular chain in a 10-year-old boy operated on for resection of extensive osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone.

Delayed complications of radiotherapy treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: imaging findings.

Radiotherapy is used to treat a wide variety of head and neck tumours that arise in and around the skull base. The delayed effects of radiation damages a range of structures, including the nervous system, bone, major vessels, mucus membranes, pituitary and salivary glands, as well as increasing the risk of radiation-induced neoplasms. In this review the complications resulting from radiation treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer treated with a high dose of radiation to a fairly large region, are illustrated. Many patients with NPC have a long-term survival, so are at risk of d

Long-term results after lateral cranial base surgery.

The surgical management of patients with slow-growing benign temporal bone neoplasms has been criticized because of its significant morbidity and mortality compared with results after radiation therapy, but long-term control by irradiation remains unproved. Long-term surgical results have not been studied previously. One hundred twenty-nine skull base operations were performed in 126 patients at the Otology Group, Nashville, Tenn., from January 1970 through May 1987. Fifty-eight patients responded to questionnaires focusing on recovery from loss of cranial nerves. All patients regained some de

A giant vagal schwannoma with unusual extension from skull base to the mediastinum.

Cervical vagal schwannoma is an extremely rare neoplasm. Middle aged people are usually affected. These tumors usually present as asymptomatic masses. These tumors are almost always benign. Preoperative diagnosis of these lesions is important due to the morbidity associated with its excision. Preoperative tissue diagnosis is not accurate. The imaging modality can be done to assess the extent and for planning the treatment. Surgical excision with preservation of neural origin is the treatment option. Giant vagal schwannomas are extremely rare. Only one case has been reported in the literature t

[Fractionated stereotactic irradiation of skull-base related tumours].

The prognosis of the treatment of brain tumours depends on two main factors: biological nature and localisation of the neoplasm. Requirements of oncologic surgery can be met only partially if at all in neurological surgery of brain tumours. Resectability depends primarily on localisation of the neoplasms. The leading principle is preservation of fine neural structures, minimising morbidity from tissue resection with the goal of maximal tumour resection. As nervous structures and the target volume do not move in the intracranial space, large radiation doses unusual in traditional radiotherapy c

Transethmoidal meningocele: an unusual complication of intracranial neoplasm.

Cranial meningoceles/encephaloceles are congenital malformations characterised by protrusion of the meninges and/or brain parenchyma because of a skull defect. Meningoceles secondary to an intracranial neoplasm have not been reported in the published literature. We report a unique case of a 42-year-old man who presented with a sudden onset of altered sensorium. Transethmoidal meningocele secondary to an intraventricular epidermoid cyst was detected on imaging.

[Painful ophthalmoplegia secondary to larynx carcinoma].

CASE REPORT: We present a case of metastatic larynx cancer in the cavernous sinus. It presented itself as a right sixth cranial nerve palsy which progressed into a painful ophthalmoplegia with normal CT and RNM in its early stages. DISCUSSION: We must suspect a cavernous sinus invasion in patients with cranial nerve palsies and with a history of malignancy, despite negative radiologic findings. Tumoral invasion of the skull base has been described in pharyngeal neoplasms but it is exceptional in larynx carcinomas.

Atypical cytologic presentation of a histiocytic sarcoma in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog.

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dog was presented because of a 10-d history of progressive vomiting, inappetence, and lethargy, with mild neurologic signs. Fine-needle aspirates of splenic nodules seen on ultrasound were suggestive of a carcinoma. On autopsy, a disseminated neoplasm was present in the lung, spleen, and adrenal glands. Additionally, there was a Chiari-like malformation of the skull with corresponding syringomyelia of the cranial spinal cord. Histologically, the neoplasm was comprised of a pleomorphic population of round cells with a high mitotic rate. Cells stained positive for

P14.05 How far can they grow... - Two clinical examples

Abstract Introduction: Cerebral metastases are the most common form of central nervous system (CNS) tumours in adults. However, malignant neoplasm may also involve structures external to the brain, such as tissue surrounding the base of the skull, and then metastasize to the brain either by direct invasion or by spreading by the cranial nerves. CASE1: A 74 year-old man, with a past history of chronic kidney disease due to renal artery thrombosis and hypertension, was admitted in the emergency room (ER) complaining of persisting pain in the superior half of the right hemiface and frontal region

Primary orbital Ewing's sarcoma presenting with local recurrence to maxillary sinus shortly after tumor resection.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a malignant, small-round-cell neoplasm that normally affects the long bones of the limbs or the pelvis. Primary orbital ES of the skull has been considered extremely rare. We describe the case of a 19-year-old female patient with primary ES originating from the inferior orbital rime and, shortly after tumor resection, local recurrence to the maxillary sinus.

Clinical outcomes of coblation-assisted pediatric endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric skull base surgeries are confined by developmental and anatomical issues. Radiofrequency coblation integrates the functions of ablation, suction, and coagulation with the ability to dissolve tissues with limited thermal injury, making it an ideal instrument for pediatric skull base surgery. We sought to evaluated the clinical outcomes of coblation-assisted pediatric endoscopic skull base surgery. METHODS: Medical records of patients under 15 years of age undergoing endoscopic skull base surgery were retrospectively reviewed. The estimated blood loss (EBL)/operating time

Multiple myeloma presenting as a giant osteolytic skull mass: Surgical challenges and pitfalls - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteolytic skull lesions can result from a broad spectrum of benign and malignant conditions, with multiple myeloma (MM) being a significant malignant cause in adults. Although skull involvement is relatively common in MM, giant exophytic lesions with extensive calvarial destruction and intracranial extension are exceedingly rare and pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old male presented with progressive right-sided weakness and a visibly enlarging skull mass. Computed tomography (CT) brain scan revealed a large, well-defined, enhancing mass mea
