BACKGROUND: Adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries (TBPIs) are life-altering events that can have detrimental effects on a patient's quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: To examine how social determinants of health (SDOH) disparities influence the risk of developing new psychosocial conditions after TBPIs in previously psychiatric-naïve patients.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and June 2019, a retrospective analysis was performed using PearlDiver's Mariner, an all-payer claims database, to create 3 cohorts: TBPI disparity cohort: patients with TBPI and presence of at least 1 SDOH disparity before in…

IMPORTANCE: More than 50% of lifetime mental health disorders develop by early adolescence, and yet it is not well understood how early childhood social-emotional functioning varies in populations or how differences in functioning may be associated with emerging mental health conditions.
OBJECTIVES: To identify profiles of social-emotional functioning at kindergarten school entry (age 5 years) and to examine to what extent profiles are related to early-onset mental health conditions (ages 6-14 years).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study followed up a population c

BACKGROUND: In an aging population an increasing number of elderly caregivers will be called upon to provide care over a long period, during which time they will be burdened both by caregiving and by the physiological effects of their own aging. Among them there will be more aged male caregivers, who will probably be less prepared than women to become caregivers. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between caregivers' gender, age, family income, living arrangements and social support as independent variables, and depressive symptoms, comorbidities, level of frailty, grip

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Social factors play a critical role in drug addiction. We recently showed that rats will abstain from methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and remifentanil self-administration when given a choice between the addictive drug and operant social interaction. Here, we further characterized operant social interaction by determining the effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, and housing conditions. We also determined choice between social interaction vs. palatable food or remifentanil.
METHODS: We first trained single-housed male and female rats to lever-press fo

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe

BACKGROUND: While the role of social determinants of health (SDH) in physical health is well known, their longitudinal contribution to depressive symptoms in chronically ill adults remains understudied. Understanding how socioeconomic disadvantage compounds the psychological burden of chronic disease may inform preventive psychiatry in aging populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether key SDH were associated with the incidence of depressive symptoms among older adults with chronic disease across Europe.
METHODS: Using data from waves 1-9 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement

This study sought to understand how young adults (age 18-25) with histories of mental health disorders are coping with disrupted transitions to adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND: Hand osteoarthritis (HOA) is a highly prevalent disease that may be impacted by social inequalities. Few studies in HOA are from underdeveloped regions. We intend to contribute to fill this gap presenting clinical characteristics of our low-income HOA cohort (LIHOA).

The number of foodborne diseases has increased in all continents, and efforts must be made to control this urgent and expressive public health problem. This article aims to present and discuss situations related to the compliance and noncompliance of food safety practices (FSPs) in light of Bourdieu's social theory. This qualitative study was conducted in commercial restaurants in two cities in São Paulo, Brazil. Participant observation was used in the restaurants, and notes referring to the kitchen workers and their bosses' work processes were registered in field journals. Thematic type conte

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have investigated psychosocial adjustments among adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), but our understanding of other craniofacial conditions remains limited. The objective of this study is to compare psychosocial adjustments among 3 groups of adolescents: craniofacial conditions other than cleft lip and/or palate (craniofacial anomaly [CFA]), CL/P, and controls (CON). Our secondary objective is to examine how social factors may predict the adjustments levels.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional, multi-informant, controlled survey study.
