Integrating Social Determinants With the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide in a Study of Bipolar Outpatients.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder, socioeconomic deprivation, and social isolation are major risk factors for suicide. The interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) posits perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as proximal causes of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, while the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework highlights distal socioeconomic factors. Studies of suicidality in bipolar disorder have used the IPTS and the SDOH framework, but few have integrated them to explore connections between distal and proximal factors. METHODS: This study examined perceived burdensomeness

Theoretical and Empirical Integration of "Dark" Traits and Socially Aversive Personality Psychopathology.

Conceptual work integrating constructs from mainstream personality research (especially so-called "dark" traits) and clinical psychopathology research has been limited. Herein, we propose all socially and/or ethically aversive traits as "flavored" manifestations of the D factor of personality (D). We argue that the D framework provides the commonality of all aversive traits, including the aversive traits from the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), a more thorough theoretical foundation. Moreover, D covers aspects that are not captured by any of the aversive AMPD traits d

Assessing How Social Exposures Are Integrated in Exposome Research: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Exposome research aims to describe and understand the extent to which all the exposures in human environments may affect our health over the lifetime. However, the way in which humans interact with their environment is socially patterned. Failing to account for social factors in research exploring the exposome may underestimate the magnitude of the effect of exposures or mask inequalities in the distribution of both exposures and outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the extent to which social factors appear in the exposome literature, the manner in which they are used in emp

Integrated Health and Social Care in the United States: A Decade of Policy Progress.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last decade in the United States (US), the burden of chronic disease, health care costs, and fragmented care delivery have increased at alarming rates. To address these challenges, policymakers have prioritized new payment and delivery models to incentivize better integrated health and social services. POLICY PRACTICE: This paper outlines three major national and state policy initiatives to improve integrated health and social care over the last ten years in the US, with a focus on the Medicaid public insurance program for Americans with low incomes. Activities supporte

Utilizing an ecological framework to integrate social identities and sociopolitical analysis in psychotherapy.

This article explores how the political events from the past year have influenced psychotherapeutic sessions with a female adolescent who is Peruvian, undocumented, and initially presented with symptoms of anxiety and a history of trauma. Focusing on this case example and utilizing an ecological framework, this article explores how the social identities of the therapist and their relation to power and privilege impact the therapeutic interventions that were chosen and not chosen. Additionally, there is a review of the benefits of consultation with a colleague of differing social identities and

Integrating advice and experience: learning and decision making with social and nonsocial cues.

When making decisions, people typically gather information from both social and nonsocial sources, such as advice from others and direct experience. This research adapted a cognitive learning paradigm to examine the process by which people learn what sources of information are credible. When participants relied on advice alone to make decisions, their learning of source reliability proceeded in a manner analogous to traditional cue learning processes and replicated the established learning phenomena. However, when advice and nonsocial cues were encountered together as an established phenomenon

Integrating neurobiology and psychopathology into evidence-based treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment can occur. This disorder typically appears during the mid-adolescent years and is unremitting throughout life if not properly treated. SAD presents as two subtypes: the more common and debilitating generalized form, and the nongeneralized form, which consists predominantly of performance anxiety. The majority of patients with SAD have comorbid mental disorders, including mood, anxiety, and substance abuse. No single development th

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Integration of Social Determinants of Health in Emergency Medicine: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are critical drivers of health disparities and patient outcomes. However, accessing and collecting patient-level SDOH data can be operationally challenging in the emergency department (ED) clinical setting, requiring innovative approaches. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines the potential of AI and data science for modeling, extraction, and incorporation of SDOH data specifically within EDs, further identifying areas for advancement and investigation. METHODS: We conducted a standardized search for studies published between 2015 and 2022,

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) curriculum integration and sustainability: Social work and nursing faculty perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has funded grants to universities to provide training and conduct research on the dissemination of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to health care professionals. However, when it comes to integrating SBIRT content into an existing curriculum, difficulties can arise. When there is so much content already in the curriculum, adding more can be challenging. Additionally, some faculty believe that course curricula should be driven by the expertise and knowledge of faculty, not by oppor

Depression in later-life Puerto Rican primary care patients: the role of illness, stress, social integration, and religiosity.

BACKGROUND: Older Puerto Ricans belong to two rapidly growing demographic groups known to have high rates of depression: the aging and Hispanic populations. Studies of depression in Puerto Ricans have primarily focused on the impact of demographic factors and health. This study expands previous research, examining the relationships between depression and social stressors, social support, and religiosity, for Puerto Rican primary care patients aged 50 and older. PATIENTS: Participants included 303 Puerto Ricans from six primary care clinics in a northeastern city. METHODS: Patients completed

Academic and social integration on campus among sexual minority students: the impacts of psychological and experiential campus climate.

A heterosexist campus climate can increase risk for mental health problems for sexual minority students; however, the relationship between campus climate for sexual minorities and academic outcomes remains understudied. Using a sample of sexual minority respondents extracted from a campus climate survey conducted at a large university in the Midwest, we examine relationships between multiple dimensions of psychological and experiential campus climate for sexual minorities with academic integration (academic disengagement, grade-point average [GPA]) and social integration (institutional satisfa…

Non-recreational burn injuries are associated with worse pain interference and social integration: a Burn Model System Database Study.

INTRODUCTION: While established predictors such as pre-injury employment influence return-to-work (RTW) outcomes, the specific impact of where and how a burn occurred remains less clear. This study investigates the impact of burn injury circumstance on RTW and psychosocial outcomes in adult burn survivors to identify populations that would benefit from tailored support measures. METHODS: Data were collected from adult burn survivors in a longitudinal database from 2015 to 2024. Participants were categorized by injury circumstance: work-related (WR), recreational (Rec), and non-work and non-re

Reduced functional integration and segregation of distributed neural systems underlying social and emotional information processing in autism spectrum disorders.

A growing body of evidence suggests that autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are related to altered communication between brain regions. Here, we present findings showing that ASD is characterized by a pattern of reduced functional integration as well as reduced segregation of large-scale brain networks. Twenty-three children with ASD and 25 typically developing matched controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while passively viewing emotional face expressions. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity of two brain structures previously implicated in emotional face processin

Fertility care in the age of algorithms: opportunities and risks of AI and social media integration in reproductive medicine.

Media representations have long influenced public understandings of infertility and assisted reproductive technologies (ART), with traditional media frequently relying on moralized or sensational narratives that reinforce stigma and oversimplification. The rise of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) has reshaped reproductive health communication, allowing patients to share lived experiences, build community, and access information outside clinical settings, while also increasing exposure to misinformation. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed research, clinical commentary, and digit

Measuring social integration, treatment, and mortality after substance use treatment: methodological elaborations in a 20-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) disorders cause substantial harm. Effective Substance Use Treatment (SUT) exists, but long-term outcomes remain inconclusive. This study used a 20-year prospective follow-up of 1248 service users entering SUT in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2000-2002 to elaborate on how different dimensions of long-term outcomes may be measured by register-based indicators. Baseline characteristics and attrition bias were explicated, and register-based outcomes were examined. RESULTS: Register-based indicators are valuable, but they also have inherent limitations such as the l
