Structural causal influence captures the forces of social inequality in models of infectious disease.

Mathematical models are central to understanding disease transmission for host-pathogen systems across the biosphere. However, most existing frameworks do not explicitly treat host population heterogeneity as a formal driver of variation in transmission dynamics. This gap is most visible in human disease, where social inequalities are well known to structure infectious disease risk, but applies broadly: ecological, behavioural and demographic structure shapes transmission in non-human host populations as well. Here, we introduce a new metric, structural causal influence, which uses causal anal

AREA-LEVEL SOCIAL AND STRUCTURAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND CERVICAL CANCER STAGE AT DIAGNOSIS.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is highly preventable, yet disparities in stage at diagnosis persist. While individual-level factors affect access to screening and diagnostic care, less is known about how area-level social and structural determinants shape stage at diagnosis. Area-based measures offer a multidimensional approach to capturing structural disadvantage but remain underutilized in cervical cancer research. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 352 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer between 2015 and 2023 at Smilow Cancer Hospital Network at Yale was conducted. Residential add

Assessing Emotional and Social Intelligence in Portuguese Youth: Structural Validity of the EQ-i:YV.

The Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (EQ-i:YV) assesses how young people perceive their emotions, relationships, coping with pressure, adaptability, and general mood. We evaluated whether its five domains provide a coherent yet differentiated representation of emotional-social functioning in 931 Portuguese participants aged 8-16 years. Responses to 54 substantive items were analysed as ordered categories in stratified exploratory and confirmatory subsamples. A restrictive five-factor confirmatory factor analysis did not adequately represent the response pattern, whereas a five-domai

The Lenacapavir effect: Triumphalist rhetoric and the displacement of social and structural responses to HIV prevention.

Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for HIV prevention with proven high efficacy in randomised controlled trials, has been widely positioned as a "game-changing" technology capable of ending the AIDS epidemic. Despite the withdrawal of major donor funding that necessitates a critical reappraisal of HIV prevention priorities, lenacapavir has been rapidly embedded within global policy discourse through claims of exceptional efficacy, anticipated cost-efficiency, and potential epidemiological impact. These narratives reflect a long-standing pattern of

Characterizing the relative frequency of clinician engagement with structured social determinants of health data.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly used to capture social determinants of health (SDH) data, though there are few published studies of clinicians' engagement with captured data and whether engagement influences health and healthcare utilization. We compared the relative frequency of clinician engagement with discrete SDH data to the frequency of engagement with other common types of medical history information using data from inpatient hospitalizations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created measures of data engagement capturing instances of data documentation (data added

Detecting Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health with Structured and Free-Text Clinical Data.

BACKGROUND: Social and behavioral determinants of health (SBDH) are environmental and behavioral factors that often impede disease management and result in sexually transmitted infections. Despite their importance, SBDH are inconsistently documented in electronic health records (EHRs) and typically collected only in an unstructured format. Evidence suggests that structured data elements present in EHRs can contribute further to identify SBDH in the patient record. OBJECTIVE: Explore the automated inference of both the presence of SBDH documentation and individual SBDH risk factors in patient

Post-Weaning Social Isolation Disturbs Gene Expression in Rat Brain Structures.

Post-weaning social isolation of male Wistar rats for 10 weeks led to an increase of their aggressiveness, sensorimotor reactivity, and cognitive deficiency, manifesting in training disorders evaluated by the acoustic startle response (amplitude of the response decreasing). Expression of gene encoding serine protease prolyl endopeptidase (EC 3.4.21.26) in the frontal cortex was higher than in control rats kept in groups, while the level of mRNA of the gene encoding dipeptidyl peptidase IV (EC 3.4.14.5) did not differ from the control in any of the brain structures. The levels of serotonin tran

Self-Awareness of Growing Up with Short Stature Structured Social Care for Children.

In this article two short statured young women talk about their particular challenges when growing up. To be short means, you are always the centre of attention with advantages and disadvantages. At the age of 30 years both resumed, it balances itself out. Attention may be positive but is sometimes exhausting and offending to always be the middle of attention. In order to cope with today's achievement-orientated society BKMF e.V. developed for children and adolescents with restricted growth a structured program how to cope with the challenges and barriers of today's life. The orbitofacial glands of bats: an investigation of the potential correlation of gland structure with social organization.

The facial glands of bats are modified skin glands, whereas there are up to three different orbital glands: Harderian, lacrimal, and Meibomian glands. Scattered studies have described the lacrimal and Meibomian glands in a handful of bat species, but there is as yet no description of a Harderian gland in bats. In this study we examined serial sections of orbitofacial glands in eight families of bats. Much variation amongst species was observed, with few phylogenetic patterns emerging. Enlarged facial glands, either sudoriparous (five genera) or sebaceous (vespertilionids only) were observed. M

RE-MAKING SELVES AND SOCIAL WORLDS: EXPERIENCES OF LIVE-IN SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT AMONG ADOLESCENTS EXPERIENCING SOCIAL STRUCTURAL MARGINALIZATION IN VANCOUVER.

Across many settings in Canada and the US, overdose is now a leading cause of death among 10 to 18-year-olds. In the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), there have been increased efforts to connect adolescents with substance use treatment, including live-in programs. While much previous work has focused on barriers to treatment among youth, less research has examined how adolescents, and in particular those experiencing high levels of residential instability, homelessness, and institutionalization via child protection, criminal legal and housing systems, understand and experience these

An investigation of the psychometric properties of the Social Thoughts and Beliefs Scale (STABS) and structure of cognitive symptoms in participants with social anxiety disorder and healthy controls.

Despite the recent increase of measures developed to assess the cognitive symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SOC), their validation is still largely preliminary. Thus, the present studies sought to replicate and extend the psychometric evaluation of the Social Thoughts and Beliefs Scale (STABS). Study 1 involved both participants with SOC (n=206) and healthy controls (n=222) that completed the STABS and other related measures of anxiety. In Study 2, participants with SOC (n=66) completed exposure-based psychotherapy for SOC with the STABS used to track symptom changes. Together, the two stud

Ending the HIV epidemic for all, not just some: structural racism as a fundamental but overlooked social-structural determinant of the US HIV epidemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the recent theoretical and empirical literature on structural racism, social determinants of health frameworks within the context of HIV prevention and treatment, and criticism of the national responses to the US epidemic. RECENT FINDINGS: In line with growing mainstream attention to the role of structural racism and health inequities, recent editorials and studies cite ending structural racism as an essential step to ending the US HIV epidemic. Recent studies demonstrate that barriers rooted in structural racism such as incarceration, housing instability, police

Living with chronic structural vulnerability: A biopsychosocial-structural formulation of a patient exhibiting "medical noncompliance" in the setting of historical trauma and social suffering.

BACKGROUND: This qualitative case study explores the potential for operationalizing the social science framework of structural vulnerability through integrating it into the classic 4P model of biopsychosocial case formulation. METHODS: Through phenomenological analysis of data from a series of longitudinal in-depth interviews with the case study participant, a middle-aged Native American man recently initiated on buprenorphine-naloxone for opioid use disorder after undergoing below-the-knee leg amputation, the study developed a biopsychosocial-structural case formulation identifying predispos

Social media use and early adolescent brain structure: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

Many adolescents initiate social media use during early adolescence, but the associations of early social media use with neurodevelopment have not been extensively studied. We utilized neuroimaging data from the U.S. Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to investigate the association of social media use (hours per day) or social media addiction (Social Media Addiction Questionnaire) with brain morphology in early adolescence. We analyzed data from 7,614 participants with high-quality structural MRI and complete covariate data at Year 2 (2018-2020, ages 10-13). In addition to pre

Body structure/function impairments and activity limitations of post-stroke that predict social participation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in Brazil, and its prognostic indicators of social reintegration are not well established yet. OBJECTIVE: To identify body structure/function impairments and activity limitations in post-stroke that predict social participation restrictions in the community. METHODS: cohort studies were selected, involving adult post-stroke participants, which investigated body structure and function impairments or activity limitations of post-stroke individuals as predictors of social participation in the community. Microaggressions and Psychological Health Among College Students: A Moderated Mediation Model of Rumination and Social Structure Beliefs.

Racial microaggressions are common experiences for students of color on college campuses. Given prior research connecting microaggressions to negative mental health outcomes, it is important to better understand the social context and process through which microaggressions are associated with poorer mental health. In addition, we put forth a psycho-sociological approach to microaggressions, integrating an attention to both individual psychology and broader social structure. Specifically, the present study investigated whether the indirect association of school/workplace microaggressions and in…

Elevated virus infection of honey bee queens reduces methyl oleate production and destabilizes colony-level social structure.

Pathogenic threats to reproductive individuals pose a profound challenge to the stability of insect societies. In honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), severe virus infections in queens can trigger worker-initiated supersedure, a socially coordinated replacement of the queen that, while risky, is essential when her reproductive competence is compromised. How viruses impact the physiology of queen hosts, who bear unique reproductive burdens within their colonies, and how this perturbs colony social order remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that the supersedure response is mediated by pathogen-

Social network structure and HIV infection among injecting drug users in Lithuania: gatekeepers as bridges of infection.

The aim of the study was to assess-while controlling for individual risk characteristics-how certain social network structural characteristics (degree, eigenvector, and betweenness centrality) are related to HIV infections. Injecting drug users (N = 299) in Vilnius, Lithuania were recruited using incentivized chain referral sampling for a cross-sectional study. Sociometric social links were established between participants, and UCINET was used to calculate network measures. HIV prevalence was 10 %, and all except two knew they were infected. Of the five variables that remained significant in t

Dimensions of health and social structure in the early intermediate period cemetery at Villa El Salvador, Peru.

This paper examines relationships between the social structure of a community and the health of its members, based on analysis of human skeletal remains (N = 64) from Villa El Salvador XII (100 BC-AD 100), a prehistoric cemetery located in the lower Lurín Valley, Peru. The ambiguity of social status as conventionally inferred from archaeological context is among the principal complicating factors in such an inquiry. We use multidimensional scaling of skeletal markers to identify the presence of patterned health-based heterogeneity in our sample, without making a priori assumptions about underl…
