Social support in the healthcare setting: the role of volunteers.

The participation of volunteers in the National Health Service (NHS) has been actively promoted during recent years, particularly within community and primary healthcare services (National Health Service 1996, 1998). As a consequence, volunteers currently make a significant contribution to health and social care within the UK. Concerning this contribution, the literature often portrays the volunteers' role as one of providing social support. In the present paper, the authors attempt to explore this role in more detail, drawing on interview data from studies of two separate volunteer programmes…

"Thanks for sharing that": ruminators and their social support networks.

Receiving positive social support after a trauma generally is related to better adjustment to the trauma. The personality of trauma survivors may affect the extent to which they seek social support, their perceived receipt of social support, and the extent to which they benefit from social support. The authors hypothesized that people with a ruminative coping style, who tended to focus excessively on their own emotional reactions to a trauma, compared to those without a ruminative coping style, would seek more social support, and would benefit more from social support, but would report receivi…

Coping and social support of parents with a diabetic child.

The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the parental coping and the social support received by the parents of diabetic children. The parental coping process was followed for a 4-week period after the diagnosis of diabetes. The parents of two girls, whose diabetes was diagnosed in early childhood, served as study subjects. Data were collected by interviewing and observing the parents over four separate periods. The data were analyzed by the time series and content analysis methods. Six phases of parental coping were identified: disbelief, lack of information and guilt, learning …

Social support and child maltreatment: a review of the evidence.

Parents who maltreat their children have long been thought to lack support from informal and social networks. Recent writers have taken the position that this relationship is a proven, causal one, with social isolation seen as a necessary antecedent condition for the occurrence of child abuse. Concurrently, initial enthusiasm for social support as a powerful explanatory variable in other areas of psychological and health research is giving way to cautious reevaluation of the evidence. The present review was undertaken to bring into sharper focus what is now known regarding the relationship bet…

Look (closely) at all the lonely people: age and the social psychology of social support.

OBJECTIVE: This article explores the relationship between age and social support. Previous research on the relationship has reached inconsistent conclusions. METHODS: Three theories are tested using the Americans' Changing Lives survey. RESULTS: The likelihood of reporting no close friends or confidants increases with age, and role changes (such as the growing likelihood of living alone) account for much of this increase. Yet these cases are exceptional, and in general, the number of friends and confidants stays the same. Moreover, evaluations of support become more positive with age, and lo…

Social Support-Seeking Behaviours in an Online Support Group for Dental Anxiety: A Content Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Dental anxiety (DA) is a prevalent condition associated with dental avoidance and reduced oral health-related quality of life, and online support groups (OSGs) represent an emerging avenue for peer support. This study aimed to assess the types and frequencies of social support sought by individuals with DA within an OSG. METHODS: Internet-mediated research was conducted using qualitative and quantitative content analyses. Publicly available threads from the Dental Fear Central (Oxford, United Kingdom) forum were sampled across designated months in 2022, 2023, and 2024. A final d…

Generality of support sources and psychometric properties of a scale of perceived social support in Turkey.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to check the generality of the structure of social support sources as measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and to examine the instrument's psychometric properties in Turkey. A previous study in Turkey showed that the definitions of support sources may differ across cultures and an attempt was made in the present study to incorporate definitions to make the scale more meaningful in Turkey. METHOD: Three samples (psychiatry, surgery, and normal), each consisting of 50 subjects, were selected from a hospital in Turkey. N…

How does a chronic wound change a patient's social life? A European survey on social support and social participation.

Chronic wounds can severely limit patient's social life. This cross-sectional study investigated quantitatively social support of patients with chronic wounds, its association with health-related quality of life as well as qualitatively changes in social participation of these patients. Overall, 263 patients from seven countries participated. The most frequent wound class was leg ulcer (49.2%). Results revealed generally high levels of social support (mean global score: 5.5) as measured with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. However, individuals differed considerably (ran…

Refugee social network growth post-resettlement: Impact of a learning, advocacy, and social support intervention.

Understanding and supporting social network growth among forcibly displaced people is vital as they rebuild their lives. This study examined data from a randomized controlled trial of the Refugee Well-being Project (RWP), a 6-month community-based intervention involving university students and refugees working together to reduce psychological distress and expand social networks. Multilevel growth curve analyses were conducted across four time points over 12 months among 290 recently resettled Afghan, Great Lakes African, Iraqi, and Syrian refugees in the United States. Results showed that inte

The Relationships Between Social Support Seeking, Social Media Use, and Psychological Resilience Among College Students.

INTRODUCTION: Social networking sites (SNSs) have evolved into a commonly used instrument for searching and obtaining social support. While previous research has explored and validated the correlation between seeking social support and the recipient's physical or psychological well-being, few studies have illuminated the mechanisms through which this relationship manifests in SNSs usage. This study investigated how the tendency of college students to seek social support corresponds to their psychological resilience via different SNSs activities and interactions on Douyin (ie, TikTok's counterp…

Social Support, Social Strain, Stressful Life Events and Mortality Among Postmenopausal Women With Breast Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Social support, social strain and stressful life events could induce chronic stress, which affects prognosis and survival after breast cancer diagnosis. However, few studies have examined the impact of psychosocial factors on different competing mortality events. METHODS: We included 9154 postmenopausal women who were newly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer after enrollment in the Women's Health Initiative, as of March 6th, 2021. Psychosocial factors were collected and stratified into quartiles. Cause of death was verified through adjudicated medical record reviews. Associat…

Resilience Through Social Support: An Intersectional Analysis of Sexual Minority Women's Social Resources for Wellbeing.

Sexual minority women (SMW) are at higher risk for a range of health conditions (e.g. depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder) than heterosexual women. However, poor health outcomes do not occur for all SMW. Resilience provides a lens for understanding why some SMW maintain good mental and behavioral health despite the presence of multiple risk factors. Few studies have examined the resilience-promoting factor of social support in relation to depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorder in SMW. There is a need for further research clarifying sources of social support (e.g. family, signi…

Social support and social action organizing in a "grey ghetto": the tenderloin experience. 1982-83.

The Tenderloin Senior Outreach Project (TSOP) is presented as a case study of effective community-based organizing among the isolated elderly in one of America's large "grey ghettos." Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social support theory and Freire's "education for critical consciousness," the Project has attempted to address the interrelated problems of poor health, social isolation and powerlessness endemic among the elderly in Single Room Occupancy hotels. The Project's metamorphosis is traced from a university-sponsored community development effort to a communitycontrolled organi…

Surviving social assistance: 12-month prevalence of depression in sole-support parents receiving social assistance.

BACKGROUND: Although it is generally recognized that poverty and depression can coexist among single parents receiving social assistance, there is insufficient research on this topic. The goals of this study therefore were to investigate the prevalence, correlates and health care expenditures associated with depression among sole-support parents receiving social assistance. METHODS: Sole-support parents who had applied for social assistance in 2 regions of southwestern Ontario were included in the study. Depression was diagnosed with the 1994 University of Michigan Composite International Dia

Social networks of substance users with HIV infection: application of the Norbeck Social Support Scale.

The role of social support networks in medication adherence among HIV-infected substance users remains understudied. In this secondary data analysis, the authors sought to determine the relationship between social support networks and antiretroviral adherence among HIV-infected substance abusers receiving methadone. They analyzed data collected in a 24-week study of 76 methadone-maintained, HIV-infected substance abusers randomized to directly observed antiretroviral therapy or treatment as usual. The authors used logistic regression to examine the relationship between social support networks …

Families of young adolescents who have survived cancer: social-emotional adjustment, adaptability, and social support.

Young adolescent (10-15 year old) survivors of childhood cancer and their families (n = 35) completed self-report measures of perceived self-competence, social support, child behavior, parental distress, and family adaptability and cohesion, at two data points, 6 months apart. Relative to instrument norms and a comparison group (n = 13), survivors and their families scored within normative levels. The overall lack of group differences is discussed in terms of the implications of tests of the null hypothesis for families with chronically ill children. Changes over time for the survivors suggest…

Effects of climate-related disasters on loneliness, social support, social functioning, and social contacts: longitudinal analyses of impact and recovery.

Climate-related changes and disasters may disrupt relationships and ties. Drawing on 10 years of data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) surveys, we examine the effects of climate-related disasters on loneliness, social support, social functioning, and social contacts with friends and family. By matching respondents who experienced a disaster with a control cohort of similar characteristics before the event, we find being exposed to a climate-related disaster is associated with an increase in loneliness and a decrease in social functioning the year of the event…

The child and adolescent social support scale: Assessing four types of perceived support from five sources.

The Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (CASSS) is one of the most commonly used measures of perceived social support with children and adolescents. The psychometric properties supporting the subscales representing the various sources of support are well-established. However, less support is available for the subscales representing the various types of support within support sources. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the degree to which the empirically derived dimensions of the CASSS align with its multidimensional theoretical framework consisting of four types of perce…

Social support in cyberspace: a content analysis of communication within a Huntington's disease online support group.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder, characterized by a progressive degeneration of the brain. Due to the nature of the symptoms, the genetic element of the disease, and the fact that there is no cure, HD patients and those in their support network often experience considerable stress and anxiety. With an expansion in Internet access, individuals affected by HD have new opportunities for information retrieval and social support. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of social support in messages posted to a HD online support group bulletin board. METHODS:…
