Seven pairs of diastereoisomers of podophyllum lignans at 2-position, including two pairs of spin-labeled compounds, were separated by micellar electrokinetic chromatography with 5 mM sodium tetraborate-20 mM NaH2PO4-120 mM sodium dodecylsulfate-30% (v/v) 2-propanol (pH 6.5-7) within 35 min. The migration behaviors of the compounds with different types and concentrations of organic modifiers were studied. The method can be used to identify the purification of the lignans, monitor the 2-H configuration transformation, and determine the 2-H configuration of the spin-labeled derivatives.

Sodium 2-propenyl thiosulfate was identified in boiled garlic (Allium sativum). When canine erythrocytes were incubated with sodium 2-propenyl thiosulfate, the methemoglobin concentration and Heinz body percentage in erythrocytes were both increased, indicating that the compound induced oxidative damage in canine erythrocytes. It seems that this compound is one of the causative agents of garlic-induced hemolysis in dogs.

Sodium azide and other compounds which activate guanylate cyclase could stimulate catecholamine (CA) release from perfused dog adrenals. Verapamil reduced the secretory effect of sodium azide, but atropine and hexamethonium did not affect it while isobutyl methylxanthine potentiated it. Ca2+ deprivation abolished the stimulating effect of sodium azide on CA release and cyclic AMP output but the increased output of cyclic GMP remained. These results suggest the involvement of the Ca2+ influx mechanism in the secretory action of sodium azide.

PURPOSE: To study and compare the efficacy of supratarsal injection of dexamethasone sodium phosphate, triamcinolone acetonide and hydrocortisone sodium succinate in treating refractory vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).
METHODS: Prospective randomized, double-masked, case control trial, including 90 eyes of 45 patients with refractory VKC. Both eyes of each patient were randomly assigned to receive supratarsal injection of one of three compounds under study: dexamethasone sodium phosphate (2 mg), triamcinolone acetonide (10.5 mg), and hydrocortisone sodium succinate (50 mg).

OBJECTIVE: Evidence from basic neurophysiology and molecular genetics has implicated persistent sodium current conducted by voltage-gated sodium (NaV ) channels as a contributor to the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Many antiepileptic drugs target NaV channels and modulate neuronal excitability, mainly by a use-dependent block of transient sodium current, although suppression of persistent current may also contribute to the efficacy of these drugs. We hypothesized that a drug or compound capable of preferential inhibition of persistent sodium current would have antiepileptic activity.
