Hippuric acid, phenol, and trichloroacetic acid levels in the urine of Japanese subjects with no known exposure to organic solvents.

Ikeda, M., and Ohtsuji, H. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 162-164. Hippuric acid, phenol, and trichloroacetic acid levels in the urine of Japanese subjects with no known exposure to organic solvents. Urine samples from 36 male and 30 female university students and 31 male factory workers with no known exposure to industrial organic solvents were analysed for hippuric acid, phenol, and trichloroacetic acid, which are the major metabolites of toluene, benzene, and trichloroethylene respectively. The normal levels were less than 1·4 g./l. for hippuric acid, less than 80 mg./l. for phenol, and

Polyuria and polydipsia. Diagnostic approach and problems associated with patient evaluation.

Primary disorders of water balance (central diabetes insipidus [DI], nephrogenic DI, and psychogenic polydipsia) should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of polyuria and polydipsia. In general, animals with these disorders have only one laboratory abnormality: a low urine specific gravity. In most instances, the more common causes of polyuria and polydipsia (e.g., hyperadrenocorticism, chronic renal failure, pyelonephritis, pyometra) have specific and obvious abnormalities associated with the complete blood cell count, the serum chemistry profile, and urinalysis. In some cases

A comparison of methods for detecting the eggs of Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm in infant stool, and the epidemiology of infection in Zanzibari infants.

This study compared five methods for detecting the eggs of the human parasitic geohelminths Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm in infant stool, and describes the epidemiology of infection in infants from a parasite-endemic area. A total of 424 infants 5-11 months old were enrolled from three villages on Pemba Island, Zanzibar. Methods used included the Kato-Katz technique, formol ethyl acetate sedimentation, modified formol ethyl acetate sedimentation, modified Wisconsin floatation, and simple gravity sedimentation. Of methods used alone, Wisconsin floatation and simple gravity sedimentation eac

Long-lasting endotamponades in vitreoretinal surgery.

In modern vitreoretinal surgery, a variety of long-lasting endotamponades is available. These endotamponades differ in physical and chemical properties and their usage is based on certain pathological and surgical considerations. With modern endotamponades the treatment and prognosis for some severe diseases of the posterior segment was improved. Besides these supportive features of new endotamponades, the surgeon has to keep in mind that certain steps, like a complete removal of the vitreous and of any traction, are crucial for the success of an operation and that the most supportive step for

Baricity and the distribution of lidocaine in a spinal canal model.

The role of the baricity of local anaesthetic solutions in determining the distribution of local anaesthetics injected into the subarachnoid space (and hence the level of anaesthesia) has been challenged. A recent study found no difference in the extent of cephalad spread of hyperbaric and isobaric solutions and concluded that density had no effect on the spread of local anesthetics. The present study, to determine the validity of this conclusion, utilized a spinal model filled with a "cerebrospinal fluid equivalent." Following the injection of hyperbaric lidocaine, the local anaesthetic was m

The dipsogenic effect of alcohol and the loss of control phenomenon.

A counterbalanced within-subjects design was employed to assess the acute effects of alcohol ingestion on thirst and fluid intake and to relate these effects to the dehydration known to result from acute ingestion of alcohol. Fourteen male nonalcoholic social drinkers between the ages of 18 and 30 consumed 0.8 gm of alcohol/kg body weight during one experimental session and a placebo (0.05 gm/kg) of equal volume during the other. During the 90-minute drinking period and for one hour both before and afterward, urine specimens were collected. After the drinking period, blood alcohol levels and u

The motion of floating and submerged objects in the Chattahoochee River, Atlanta, GA.

Two mannikins, one designed to float and one designed to sink, were used to examine the ways in which human bodies move in a river. The floating mannikin was used to examine the movement of a body floating downstream on the surface and to determined the flow patterns of surface currents through bends in the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, GA. The submerged mannikin was constructed to have a specific gravity of a deceased person (over a range of specific gravities) and was used to examine the motion of a body immediately upon entering the water. The submerged mannikin also was used to examine m

Effects of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on ankle, knee, and hip quasi-stiffness in overground walking.

Quasi-stiffness characterizes the dynamics of a joint in specific sections of stance-phase and is used in the design of wearable devices to assist walking. We sought to investigate the effect of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on quasi-stiffness of the hip, knee, and ankle in overground walking. 12 participants walked at 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m/s in 1, 0.76, 0.54, and 0.31 gravity. We defined 11 delimiting points in stance phase (4 each for the ankle and hip, 3 for the knee) and calculated the quasi-stiffness for 4 phases for both the hip and ankle, and 2 phases for the knee. Synergistic action of gravity and temperature on the motor system within the lifespan: a "Baby Astronaut" hypothesis.

Here we describe GATO (gravity, age, thermoregulation, and oxygenation) hypothesis (or a "Baby Astronaut" hypothesis) which we suggest to explain synergistic effect of these factors on the motor system. Taken separately, microgravity (in spaceflight, G~0), the early age, heat and hypoxia exert identical effect on the motor system. We posit that synergy of these factors originate from their synchronicity during intrauterine immersion (analog microgravity) of the fetus in warm hypoxic condition. We further postulate three successive motor adaptive strategies, driven lifelong by gravity as the ke

Diagnosis and management algorithm of acute onset of central diabetes insipidus in critically ill children.

We devised a diagnosis and management algorithm for acute onset of central diabetes insipidus (CDI), and conducted a retrospective evaluation of its efficacy. Fourteen patients admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) over a three year period were diagnosed with acute CDI secondary to various brain injuries. All patients were treated as per the algorithm guidelines. The initial dose of aqueous vasopressin ranged from 0.25 to 1.0 mU/kg/h. Low sodium content solution (0-0.5 normal saline) was used to replace urine output in excess of 3 ml/kg/h and for maintenance fluid therapy. The t

Quantitative CT-scan to evaluate cerebral edema secondary to hyperammonemia in ICU: A proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Hyperammonemia is a critical condition sometimes associated with severe neurological symptoms and cerebral edema. Quantitative CT-scan may help directly assess the impact of ammonia levels on brain structures, offering the potential to improve patient management. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, proof-of-concept study on patients admitted to the ICU with ammonemia >100 µmol/L who underwent one or more brain CT-scans. Weight, volume, and specific gravity of brain structures were assessed using BrainView software (Institut National des Télécommunications). RESULTS: Seven pati

Urinary lead exposure and breast cancer risk in a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Lead is a toxic nonessential metal with widespread exposure starting in utero. Lead has been reclassified in 2004 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer Working Group from a "possible" to a "probable" human carcinogen. Lead may be a facilitative or permissive carcinogen, which means that lead may permit or augment the genotoxic effects of other exposures. METHODS: This population-based study in Wisconsin gathered survey data and home-collected urine specimens from 246 women, ages 20 to 69 years, with incident invasive breast cancer identified from the Wisconsin state r

Fluid losses and hydration status of industrial workers under thermal stress working extended shifts.

AIMS: To assess whether workers under significant thermal stress necessarily dehydrated during their exposure and whether "involuntary dehydration" was inevitable, as supported by ISO 9866 and other authorities. Other objectives were to quantify sweat rates against recommended occupational limits, to develop a dehydration protocol to assist with managing heat exposures, and to understand the role of meal breaks on extended shifts in terms of fluid replacement. METHODS: A field investigation to examine the fluid consumption, sweat rates, and changes in the hydration state of industrial workers

Neurophysiology of developing fish at altered gravity: background--facts--perspectives.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the phylogenetic as well as the individual development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On the one side, gravity represents a factor of physical restriction, which compelled the ancestors of all extant living beings to develop basic achievements to counter the gravitational force (e.g., elements of statics like any kind of skeleton--from actin to bone--to overcome gravity enforced size limits or to keep form). On the other side, alrea

Eccentric activation and muscle damage: biomechanical and physiological considerations during downhill running.

An eccentric muscle activation is the controlled lengthening of the muscle under tension. Functionally, most leg muscles work eccentrically for some part of a normal gait cycle, to support the weight of the body against gravity and to absorb shock. During downhill running the role of eccentric work of the 'anti-gravity' muscles--knee extensors, muscles of the anterior and posterior tibial compartments and hip extensors--is accentuated. The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between eccentric muscle activation and muscle damage, particularly as it relates to running, and specif

Severe recurrent hypernatremia and probable lithium-associated nephrogenic diabetes insipidus following pancreatectomy in a patient with schizophrenia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is characterized by impaired renal responsiveness to arginine vasopressin, causing defective urinary concentration and large volumes of dilute urine. Long-term lithium exposure is an important acquired cause. Perioperative fasting, restricted free-water intake, and ongoing fluid losses may unmask compensated lithium-associated urinary concentrating dysfunction and precipitate severe hypernatremia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man underwent laparoscopic resection of a pancreatic tail lesion. His history included schizophrenia, type 2 diabete

[Immunologic aspects of acute viral hepatitis at different ages].

Patients of different age, among them 103 with viral hepatitis B and 120 with viral hepatitis A, were examined for immunoregulatory subpopulations of T lymphocytes and for the effects of HBsAg preparations and human liver-specific lipoprotein (LSL) on the blood E-RFC content. The patients of both mature and elderly age with viral hepatis A demonstrated insignificant, readily reversible alterations in cellular immunity. The patients with viral hepatitis B, particularly elderly ones, showed an evident tendency toward the predominance of the suppressor effects, which correlated with the disease g

Toward a neuroergonomic understanding of spatial disorientation.

Despite decades of research, spatial disorientation, which is the incorrect perception of one's orientation relative to gravity, remains one of the leading causes of aviation mishaps. In this mini-review, we highlight the role of the vestibular system towards generating disorientation. Specifically, in the absence of other cues, the brain is incapable of distinguishing between the acceleration caused by a static force such as gravity from that experienced in an accelerating vehicle, which leads to an ambiguity leading to acceleration being wrongly interpreted as tilts. Finally, because vestibu
