Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen capable of causing various diseases, from skin infections to life-threatening pneumonia and toxic shock syndrome. S. aureus exoproteins, including superantigens, contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of this organism. Antibiotics inhibit growth, but often provide no protection from S. aureus exoproteins. With the emergence of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus, new therapeutic options to treat or prevent S. aureus-associated diseases are critical. Most S. aureus infections begin on the skin or mucosal surfaces from direct inflammatory or cytot

The occurrence and spread of staphylococcal infections in stocks of SPF-animals were studied over a period of more than three years. The results were compared with observations made by other authors. Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from both sick and healthy animals (mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs) as well as from veterinary staff were lysotyped with the international phage set for epidemiological investigations. The majority of the lysotypes demonstrated in sick mice and rats belonged to lysogroup III (77% and 96% respectively). S. aureus strains with the phage patterns III 6/42E/47/…

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) and fracture-related infection (FRI) are difficult-to-treat conditions in patients with severe comorbidity or significant surgical risk. In cases not eligible for standard strategy, debridement procedures with the retention of prosthesis or internal fixation device, combined with long-term antibiotic treatment and subsequent indefinite chronic oral antimicrobial suppression (COAS), can be the only reasonable choice. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of COAS and its follow-up in the management of these cases. We retrospectively analyzed a cohort

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are known to be accompanied by significant risks. However, the incidence of adverse events (ADEs) resulting in unplanned drug discontinuation when used for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) is currently unknown.
METHODS: This study included 156 patients over the age of 18 treated for staphylococcal PJI with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention between 1 January 2007 and 21 November 2019. Of the 156 patients, 64 had total hip arthroplasty (THA) and 92 had total knee arthroplasty (TKA) infections. The primary outcome was rate of unplanned drug

We report a 78-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy, who presented with acquired reactive perforating collagenosis, followed by gangrenous infections localized on the lesions. Histopathological findings revealed a feature of transepidermal elimination of degenerated collagen bundles associated with infiltrates of neutrophils. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the necrotic tissue. The infection was successfully treated with systemic antibiotics and debridement. We believe that the presence of necrotic plug in the lesions and microangiopathy due to diabetes mellitus may provide a suscept

Infectious complications infrequently occur after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is performed. We recently treated three patients with invasive staphylococcal infections that developed after PTCA. Two patients had septic arthritis of the knee joint secondary to probable femoral endarteritis, and the third patient had an infected hematoma of the groin. Early reuse of the initial puncture site, prolonged retention of the femoral sheath, bleeding or hematoma at the femoral sheath insertion site and vascular complications such as pseudoaneurysm may predispose to infectious s…

The results of the realization of antistaphylococcal measures in maternity hospitals, carried out under the guidance and control of the sanitary and epidemiological service, are presented. The sanitary and epidemiological station registered each case of staphylococcal infection in nursing mothers and infants and investigated its epidemiological aspects. The exposure of the causes responsible for the disease allowed to take up the necessary antiepidemic measures in due direction, thus preventing the spread of hospital infections.

In cases of staphylococcal infection in children (osteomyelitis, purulent destructive pneumonia, phlegmons, abscesses) the use of counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) allowed one to detect antistaphylococcal antibodies (anti-poly-A beta) in 12.5-69.1% of cases and staphylococcal antigen in the blood serum in 6.1-25.0% of cases, the antigen titer reaching 1 : 1-1 :8. In staphylococcal sepsis with faintly pronounced local pyo-inflammatory processes, as well as in diseases of nonstaphylococcal etiology and in healthy children, no clear reactions indicating the presence of antistaphylococcal antibo

Despite advanced implant sterilization and aseptic surgical techniques, implant-associated infection remains a major challenge for orthopedic surgeries. The subject of bacterial biofilms is receiving increasing attention, probably as a result of the wide acknowledgement of the ubiquity of biofilms in the clinical environment, as well as the extreme difficulty in eradicating them. Biofilm can be defined as a structured microbial community of cells that are attached to a substratum and embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that they have produced. Biofilm development h

Intra-abdominal disease can present as an extra-abdominal abscess and can follow several routes, including the greater sciatic foramen, obturator foramen, femoral canal, pelvic outlet, and inguinal canal. Nerves and vessels can also serve as a route out of the abdomen. The psoas muscle extends from the twelfth thoracic and fifth lower lumbar vertebrae to the lesser trochanter of the femur, which means that disease in this muscle group can migrate along the muscle, out of the abdomen, and present as a thigh abscess. We present a case of a primary pelvic staphylococcal infection presenting as a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of cotrimoxazol plus rifampicin in staphylococcal osteoarticular infection.
METHOD: Open, non-comparative study of adult hospitalized patients with documented staphylococcal bone infection.
RESULTS: From Feb 1989 to Dec 1993 28 episodes of staphylococcal bone infection were treated in 14 men and 13 women; the mean age was 48 +/- 21 years (range, 11-84). They received cotrimoxazol (7 mg/kg/day of trimethoprim) plus rifampicin (600-1200 mg/day), both orally, every 8 to 12 h with a mean duration of treatment of 34.2 +/- 8.2 days (range, 21 to 55 da

OBJECTIVE: Many drugs used for prophylaxis against opportunistic infections in AIDS also have activity against common bacteria. This study was performed to delineate relationships between prior use of antimicrobials and Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.
DESIGN: To compare prior exposure to selected antimicrobial drugs in patients who had S. aureus bacteremia and in controls who did not, a nested case-control study was conducted within a cohort of HIV-infected persons followed in an outpatient clinic.
METHODS: Using a computerized database based on HIV clinic records, 48 cases with S. aureus

PURPOSE: We describe the manifestations of spontaneous staphylococcal pyomyositis in patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus ( … ad HIV- or zidovudine-related myositis, or had other conditions known to be associated with serious staphylococcal infections. Two patients studied had normal serum levels of all IgG subclasses. Elevated serum IgE, eosinophilic inflammatory infiltrates, or marked peripheral eosinophilia was observed in two patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Staphylococcal pyomyositis in HIV-infected …
