The aim of the present study was to delineate the involvement of TRH receptors in the thyrotrope adaptation to starvation (i.e. plasma TSH and thyroid hormone decrease, increased sensitivity to T3) by measuring [3H]TRH binding in euthyroid, hypothyroid and T3-substituted rats (175 ng/100 g body weight). Our results show that in euthyroid rats, starvation does not significantly modify either the affinity or the number of pituitary binding sites. In hypothyroid and T3-substituted rats, starvation does not alter the negative control exerted by T3 on the number of TRH binding sites. Our data indic…

Previous studies have established that older (16 wk) and more obese rats conserve body protein during prolonged starvation. This adaptation is due in part to a curtailment of muscle proteolysis. To determine whether this response occurs also in younger rats and whether protein is conserved at sites other than muscle, studies were conducted in young 6-wk-old rats previously fed either a chow or a high-fat diet before starvation. Fat feeding caused a marked increase in adipose mass and prolonged survival. Whereas chow-fed rats survived the fast for approximately 5 days, fat-fed rats lived for 10…

Roles of ovarian progesterone secretion and maternal nutrition in fetal development were investigated in a species that normally experiences considerable embryonic and fetal mortality. Pregnancies were maintained in 81% of Yorkshire pigs during prolonged starvation (e.g., 40 days; 0 kcal/day, water only) in either the middle third (days 30-70) or last third (days 70-110) of gestation compared with 100% in full-fed controls (7,028 kcal/day). In spite of severe maternal deprivation, fetal survival rates averaged 65% in starved dams and 63% in controls; mean number of living fetuses was 9.9 in st…

BACKGROUND: Research has highlighted the physical complications of starvation, but there is less research examining the psychological effects of starvation in humans.
AIMS: This scoping review synthesises literature on the non-physical effects of starvation in humans.
METHOD: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Global Health for studies published between 1946 and 2023 examining the non-physical effects of starvation in individuals aged 2-79 years, including those who were starved, malnourished, stunted, wasted, underweight, had a restrictive eating disorder, o…

Starvation-related deaths are not uncommon worldwide particularly in economically underdeveloped regions. However, the forensic characterization of such cases remains limited due to underdeveloped local forensic systems. Here we presented a case of a neonate who died of starvation after being abandoned in the wild for 14 days, and 9 additional reported cases were identified by a systematic search of PubMed and MEDLINE databases. Based on these findings, the key forensic characteristics were summarized. Significant reductions in body or organ weight were consistently documented across all ten c…

OBJECTIVES: Starvation ketosis may occur in children during intercurrent illnesses due to metabolic adaptation to fasting, resulting in significant ketonemia and sometimes ketoacidosis. Also known as accelerated starvation, common symptoms are vomiting, lethargy, and seizures. Previous studies found the prevalence of ketotic hypoglycemia to be 4 per 100,000 presentations to the emergency department (ED). We hypothesized that the prevalence had been underestimated due to the retrospective nature and restricted definitions of previous studies. Our aim was to determine if a prospective study woul…

The ever-changing landscape of dieting and its correlation with health outcomes have continued to evolve with time. New diets appear and disappear just as quickly as they gain notoriety. This is a rare case of a 67-year-old female with a history of type II diabetes who presented with generalized weakness, nausea, and vomiting, and was found to have severe anion gap metabolic acidosis. In an effort to lose weight, she was combining a ketogenic diet with prolonged fasting and exogenous ketone supplement use that she purchased online. The patient reported drinking an exogenous ketone ester supple

Coeliac disease is the most well-known cause of villous atrophy in duodenal biopsies. Other well recognised causes of villous atrophy includ … c populations in Africa and South America, in hibernating animals and animal models of experimental starvation, there is very little literature on adult human subjects. We report a case of a 76-year-old gentleman, presenting with chronic metabolic acidosis and anorexia who was found to have villous atrophy on duodenal biopsy, in the absence of any evidence o …

Interactions between the gut microbiome and the brain are of increasing interest to both researchers and clinicians. Evidence is mounting on the causal role of an altered gut microbiome in inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and diabetes, and psychiatric diseases like anxiety and depression. Mechanisms include altered energy harvest from food, hormonal changes, increased gut permeability, inflammation, immune response, and a direct influence on the brain and behavior. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is the third most common disease in adolescence and exacts a hig

All living forms, prokaryotes as eukaryotes, have some means of adaptation to food scarcity, which extends the survival chances under extrem … ts. However, they also present an often-overlooked characteristic. They are able to stand long time starvation. Planarians have adapted to periods of fasting by shrinking or degrowing. Here we will review the published data about starvation in planarians and conclude with the possibility of starvation being one of the processes that rejuvenate the planarian, …

Of the problems that complicate child-bearing, hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), or severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), is likely one of the most painful with unrelenting retching and vomiting that can lead to measurable injuries such as Mallory-Weiss Syndrome and esophageal rupture, and/or subtle maternal cognitive impairments related to starvation and dehydration. Recognized hallmarks of HG include dehydration, ketonuria, weight loss over 5%, and electrolyte abnormalities not attributable to other causes. Historically providers regarded the hyperemetic as a difficult to treat patient w…

Selective autophagy, mediated by Atg8 binding proteins, has not been extensively studied in plants. Plants possess a large gene family encoding multiple isoforms of the Atg8 protein. We have recently reported the identification of two new, closely homologous Arabidopsis thaliana plant proteins that bind the Arabidopsis Atg8f protein isoform. These two proteins are specific to plants and have no homologs in nonplant organisms. The expression levels of the genes encoding these proteins are elevated during carbon starvation and also during late stages of seed development. Exposure of young seedli…

Autophagy is a membrane-trafficking mechanism that delivers cytoplasmic constituents into the lysosome/vacuole for bulk protein degradation. This mechanism is involved in the preservation of nutrients under starvation condition as well as the normal turnover of cytoplasmic component. Aberrant autophagy has been reported in several neurodegenerative disorders, hepatitis, and myopathies. Here, we generated conditional knockout mice of Atg7, an essential gene for autophagy in yeast. Atg7 was essential for ATG conjugation systems and autophagosome formation, amino acid supply in neonates, and star…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Leptin, the ob/ob gene product, is a recently discovered peptide hormone, secreted by adipocytes, which can act as a satiet … 48 h and given twice-daily intraperitoneal injections of recombinant leptin (1 microg/g).
RESULTS: Starvation led to a 20% decrease in body weight and a similar decrease in the weights of the intestines. Starvation also markedly inhibited intestinal epithelial cell proliferation. Leptin had little effect on the small intestine and did not stimulate prolifer …

During January to March 1991, 38 mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) found dead from a group of approximately 600 overwintering on the South Saskatchewan River were examined. Thirty birds died from starvation, four had disseminated Staphylococcus aureus infection, and the cause of death of four birds was not determined. All six birds from which the esophagus was examined microscopically, including the four birds with staphylococcosis, had squamous metaplasia of the submucosal glands, a lesion pathognomonic for vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency may occur in mallards and other waterfowl that …
