Two cases of chronic giardiasis of the stomach diagnosed from gastric mucosal biopsy specimens are reported. The first case was associated with an acute-on-chronic gastritis and Helicobacter-like organisms, and the second with an adenocarcinoma of the stomach. In both cases the trophozoites had been missed in earlier biopsy specimens. As far as is known this is the first report of giardiasis of the stomach.

The commonest malignant tumour of the stomach is gastric carcinoma. Although the incidence of this neoplasm has declined worldwide, it still ranks fifth to seventh as a cause of cancer-related deaths in the West where the overall 5-year survival from the disease remains poor and averages 5-10%. The normal microscopic and gross morphologic features of the stomach are described. Emphasis is given to mucosal anatomy and the recognition of minor alterations seen in disease that may be identified on an endoscopic biopsy. Advice is given in the interpretation of biopsy artefact that may present diagnostic problems. The various types of gastric metaplasia are discussed both in relation to altered morphology and to changes in mucin histochemistry.

A case of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach in a 63-year-old woman has been reported. The tumor was located in pyloric antrum and histologic examination disclosed a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, with many horn pearls. Histogenesis of similar cases of this unusual tumor have been briefly discussed.

Carcinoid tumours are not common, but have been found along the digestive tract and at other sites in the body. The carcinoid syndrome is associated with some of these tumours. A case of gastric carcinoid, without the syndrome, is discussed, and a review of the biochemistry involved and the treatment is given.
