This study aimed to evaluate the use of ozone to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Consecutive sixty-nine participants with RAS were recruited into this non-randomized double blind, controlled cohort observational study (test group). A control group of 69 RAS patients who matched test group with age and gender was recruited. RAS lesions in test group were exposed to ozone in air for 60 seconds while controls received only air. Ulcer size and pain were recorded for each participant at baseline and daily for 15 days. Ulcer duration was determined by recording the time taken for ulcers t

OBJECTIVES: The aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the composition of oligosaccharides from mucin MUC7 in recurrent aphthous stomatitis as these heavily O-glycosylated mucins confer many of saliva's protective properties such as defence against mucosal pathogens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unstimulated whole saliva samples were collected from six individuals, three with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and three corresponding sibling, without this condition. Oligosaccharides from salivary MUC7 were isolated and analysed by liquid chromatography-

Behcet disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) are systemic inflammatory diseases, but the exact pathogenesis of both the diseases is unknown. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of platelet activation. The aim of this study was to investigate the MPV levels in patients with BD, RAS, and healthy participants. A total of 61 patients with BD, 60 patients with RAS, and 60 healthy controls were included in this study. The MPV levels and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in patients with BD and RAS groups were significantly higher than the control groups (P < .001). In the BD group

BACKGROUND: Aphthous stomatitis, a common mucocutaneous disorder, is a well accepted complication of sirolimus therapy. This association has been reported less frequently with tacrolimus.
CASE: We present an 11-year old male with Budd-Chiari syndrome who experienced profound worsening of chronic aphthous ulcers after immunosuppressive therapy was changed from tacrolimus to sirolimus.
CONCLUSION: Since these drugs are used widely in the pediatric transplantation population, this report serves to heighten awareness of this debilitating phenomenon, and to stress the importance of exercising cau

Major aphthous stomatitis (Sutton's disease) is a clinical variant of recurrent aphthous stomatitis differentiated by its high level of morbidity. It is generally found in areas of non-keratinized mucosa and is characterised by the presence of necrotic giant ulcers accompanied by intense pain. While this pathology has been the subject of molecular studies, its etiopathogenesis is still unknown. The most widely accredited hypothesis is that it represents an immune mechanism, namely the immunological response of mucosa with antigenic anomalies, modulated by altered local reactivity and influence

The leukocytes from sixty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were tested for histamine release in response to environmental and food antigens. Eighteen patients (30 percent of the population studied) were atopic, and this history of respiratory allergy was confirmed by an in vitro histamine release assay. The nonatopic patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis had a significantly higher incidence of in vitro histamine release to foods than did control subjects. The leukocytes from twenty-three patients (38 percent) released histamine to food antigens. Patients eliminated foodstuffs

Oral aphthous ulcer in Behçet's disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a cause of discomfort for many patients, especially in cases refractory to colchicine or azathioprine. Roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor, may be effective for treating refractory oral ulcers (OUs) in BD and RAS, especially in regions where apremilast is unavailable. In this study, we investigated the efficacy and safety profile of low-dose roflumilast for refractory OUs in BD and RAS. This single-center, single-arm, retrospective observational study included 46 patients screened from the o

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common chronic disease in the oral mucosa that affects about 20% of the population. It is characterized by solitary or multiple, recurrent, small ulcers with erythematous haloes and yellow/gray floors. RAS can be managed through a wide variety of preventative measures and therapies, intending to reduce ulcer pain, stimulate ulcer healing, and/or prevent ulcer recurrence. First-line treatment options include topical medications in the form of corticosteroids (triamcinolone acetonide), anti-inflammatory drugs (amlexanox), antibiotics (doxycycline), and an

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disease characterized by intermittent eruptions of painful oral ulcerations. Hippocrates first described aphthous stomatitis with the Greek word aphthi meaning "to inflame." RAS affects 10-20% of the population with the incidence being the highest among young adults. The peak age of onset is between 10 and 19 years of age. It has three main forms of presentation. The most common being minor RAS, along with the major and herpetiform types. Many local and systemic factors are associated with RAS pathogenesis. The main concern with oral aphthae

Helicobacter pylori is an established cause of gastric ulcers. Its role in causing recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains controversial. Fifty-two RAS patients and 52 sex-matched controls were recruited in this case-control study. All subjects were screened for hematinic deficiencies and H. pylori. The latter was assessed quantitatively using the 14C-urea breath test. The χ2 test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used to compare H. pylori and hematinic indices between cases and controls, while conditional logistic regression was used to assess the associations between the occurrence of

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral mucosal disorder that affects 20% of the population worldwide. Factors such as trauma, stress, genetic, hypersensitivity, nutrition, immune disturbance and hormonal imbalance may disturb the oxidant and antioxidant balance of an organism and precipitate RAS, but the relationships are poorly understood.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant status in plasma and saliva of patients with RAS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with RAS and forty healthy individuals were included in the study. The level

Periodontal disease has been associated with glycaemia. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral lesions and is characterized by painful recurrent oral ulcers. However, the exact cause and treatment of RAS is not yet well-known. Furthermore, there is still unknown the relationship between RAS and glycaemia. Prediabetes has shown to have role on worse metabolic profile. However, there is still no data on the relationship between prediabetes and clinical RAS. Therefore, the purpose of this hypothesis is to assess whether the prediabetes aggravate RAS.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND; Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) presents a diagnostic problem in Behçet's disease (BD), particularly when it occurs as the only or earliest feature of the disease. To date, there have been only a few reports studying the differences in characteristics between RAS and BD.
AIM: To examine the clinical differences between RAS and BD using a large group of patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out, analysing demographic data, the clinical features of the oral ulcer, and the major and minor symptoms of BD of 1643 patients with RAS and 3527 patients with

UNLABELLED: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a disease characterized by the periodic appearance of aphthous lesions on the oral mucosa, of which etiology and physiopathology are not well explained. Recent studies with direct immunofluorescence show controversial results. Some reveal that the basic disorder is associated with humoral immunity, while others point to changes in cellular immunity. Atypical forms of aphthous stomatitis may have its differential diagnosis carried out with vesicobullous diseases, such as pemphigus vulgaris.
AIM: Check the presence of immunocomplexes in the muc

BACKGROUND: Despite plenty of research, the cause of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains obscure. It has been proposed that, the aetiological factors such as local trauma, smoking, vitamin deficiencies and viral infections lead to aphthae formation via final common pathway based on increased oxidative stress. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) alterations in plasma and saliva, and in addition uric acid (UA) in saliva, in patients with RAS and healthy controls.
METHODS: Thirty-t
