Whole 16S rRNA gene sequencing reveals differences in the oral microbiota of healthy individuals infected with oral HPV.

AIM: To explore the oral microbiota in healthy individuals with and without oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and identify any featu … s between-subject groups. RESULTS: We demonstrated (1) significant differences in the abundance of Streptococcus salivarius in oral HPV-negative males; (2) males with low-risk HPV had an increased abundance of several species and (3) decreased abundance of Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus parasanguinis. For women, (4) oral microbiota Shannon diversity was signi …

Lemierre's syndrome: a serious complication of an odontogenic infection.

Necrobacillosis, postanginal septicaemia or Lemierre's Syndrome is characterised by suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with embolization to several sites, including the lungs. We report the case of a 38-year-old man who was initially hospitalized because of odontogenic cellulitis. Given the deterioration of his clinical state (septic shock and multiple organ failure), neck computed tomography was performed, revealing both cervical and parotid abscesses, and thrombosis of the right internal jugular vein. Streptococcus salivarius was isolated. The patient was treated with …

Determination of 16S rRNA sequences of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and phylogenetic relationships among members of the genus Streptococcus.

We determined the 16S rRNA sequences of the type strains of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus gordonii and calculated the phylogenetic distances between those organisms and other members of the genus Streptococcus. The viridans group streptococci were separated into five phylogenetic groups; we named these groups the anginosus group, the mitis group, the salivarius group, the bovis group, and the mutans group. S. mitis and S. gordonii clustered in the mitis group together with Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguis, and Streptococcus parasanguis at levels of

Interkingdom interaction between C. albicans and S. salivarius on titanium surfaces.

BACKGROUND: In oral candidiasis models, Candida albicans and Streptococcus salivarius sp. biofilms have an antagonistic relationship. Due to this, S. salivarius have been used experimentally as probiotic. However, the interaction between these microorganisms in the peri-implantitis-like microenvironment remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between C. albicans and S. salivarius biofilms developed on titanium surfaces, under reduced oxygen levels. METHODS: Titanium specimens were pre-conditioned with artificial saliva (1 h, 37 °C). Single-species biofilms of C. albicans…

[Epiglottitis with an abscess caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae].

A healthy 23-year-old man was admitted under the diagnosis of acute epiglottitis. Flexible fiber laryngoscopic examination showed a swollen epiglottis with an abscess. Microbiologic swab showed Haemophilus parainfluenzae, non-haemolytic Streptococcus and non-haemolytic Streptococcus salivarius. Only in 1984 a case of acute epiglottitis due to H. parainfluenzae has been described in the literature. Still, in this case we think that H. parainfluenzae was the most likely pathogen causing the abscess.

[Correction of halitosis in chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx in adults].

UNLABELLED: Approximately 25% of the world population suffer from halitosis, making it a significant medico-social issue. It is one of the clinical signs of chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx and is commonly caused by the persistence some bacteria in the oral cavity and in the oropharynx. These in turn facilitate formation of volatile sulphur compounds. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the probiotic strain Streptococcus salivarius K12 in the Bactoblis product in exacerbation of chronic inflammatory diseases of the oropharynx. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 45 patien…

Alterations of oral microbiota and impact on the gut microbiome in type 1 diabetes mellitus revealed by integrated multi-omic analyses.

BACKGROUND: Alterations to the gut microbiome have been linked to multiple chronic diseases. However, the drivers of such changes remain lar … n between streptococcal species. More specifically, we found a decreased abundance of the commensal Streptococcus salivarius in the oral cavity of T1DM individuals, which is linked to its apparent competition with the pathobiont Streptococcus mutans. The decrease in S. salivarius in the oral cavity was also associated with its decrease in the gut as well as higher abundan …

Speciation of presumptive viridans streptococci from early onset neonatal sepsis.

Twenty isolates resembling viridans streptococci, 16 from blood and four from gastric aspirates, from 17 cases of early onset neonatal sepsis were identified by the API20 Strep, Rapid ID 32 Strep and conventional tests plus hydrolysis of methylumbelliferyl glycoside substrates. Nineteen of the isolates were identified as species of viridans streptococci and one as a Leuconostoc sp. Ten of the isolates were Streptococcus oralis, three S. mitis biotype 1, two S. mitis biotype 2 and one each of S. sanguis, S. vestibularis, S. salivarius and S. intermedius. The Rapid ID 32 Strep and conventional p

Sinusitis of dental origin.

Acute or chronic sinusitis may be odontogenic. Bacteria involved in odontogenic sinusitis are specific organisms associated with the teeth (Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus mutans, anaerobic germs). They are often secondary to an intrasinus foreign body following periodontitis. The treatment is both naso-sinusal and dental. Cysts of the maxilla can also invade the sinus. In particular, radiculo-dental cysts (periapical) must be surgically excised, in some cases associated with a middle meatotomy. Finally, one should look for oro-antral fistulae. The surgical techn…

[Biological activity tests of chemical constituents from two Brazilian Labiatae plants].

We studied the bioactivities of constituents from two tropical medicinal plants, Cunila spicata and Hyptis fasciculata. These plants found in Brazil belong to the Labiatae family. Four known compounds obtained from these herbs were identified as 3alpha, 24-dihydoxylurs-12-en-28-oic acid, betulinic acid, aurantiamide acetate, and aurantiamide benzoate by spectroscopic means. 3alpha, 24-Dihydoxylurs-12-en-28-oic acid has potent inhibitory activity against Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Porphyromomas gingivalis. Aurantiamide benzoate exhibited mode…

Lactobacillus salivarius alleviated dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammatory responses through modulation of the intestinal flora.

Colitis is a multifactorial inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involving intestinal barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and microbiota imbalance. Lactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius), a probiotic with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, was evaluated in a mouse model of DSS-induced colitis. Treatment with L. salivarius significantly reduced weight loss, colon shortening, and disease activity index, while improving histopathological damage. DSS-induced colitis exhibited significant oxidative stress, evidenced by decreased total antioxidant capacity, increa

A modular genetic toolbox for precise gene regulation and multi-color imaging in streptococci.

Fluorescent labeling is a powerful tool in microbiology allowing live cell imaging and providing insights into dynamic cellular processes, quantification of gene expression, and protein subcellular localization. Although multicolor imaging is widely used in Streptococcus pneumoniae and S. mutans, this is less common in other streptococcal species. To address this gap in the streptococcal molecular toolbox, we benchmarked five different fluorescent proteins. They were fused to the C-terminus of S. pneumoniae HlpA, a small non-specific DNA binding histone-like protein. These reporters, combined
