Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening disease most often caused by blood-borne bacteria that infect previously damaged cardiac tissue. Despite the importance of this disease, the genetic basis for IE-associated fitness remains poorly defined. Here, we present the first genome-wide in vivo analysis of bacterial fitness in a vertebrate model of IE. The requirements of human salivary mucins for aggregating potential towards the common cariogenic oral bacteria, S. mutans and S. sanguis, were investigated. Agglutination inhibition assays demonstrated that the aggregating capacity towards bacteria resides in the acidic mucin fraction. OBJECTIVE: To observe the dynamic changes of oral microflora early colonized in infants.
METHODS: The oral swab samples for the study were taken in 1 day, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 months after birth from 12 healthy neonates. By choosing suitable diluted concentration, the samples were incubated aerobically, facultative anaerobically and anaerobically. The strains were identified by observing colony characteristics, Gram staining and biochemical tests.
