PREVALENCE AND INTENSITY OF THE SINUS ROUNDWORM ( SKRJABINGYLUS CHITWOODORUM) IN RABIES-NEGATIVE SKUNKS OF TEXAS, USA.

:  Estimates of the distribution and prevalence of the sinus roundworm ( Skrjabingylus chitwoodorum) have been based largely on the inspection of skunk (Mephitidae) skulls showing damage from infections. We examined 595 striped skunks ( Mephitis mephitis) and nine hog-nosed skunks ( Conepatus leuconotus) that had tested negative for rabies by the Texas Department of State Health Services (US) between November 2010 and April 2015 to determine species of Skrjabingylus, prevalence and intensity of infection, and distribution of infection in Texas by county. We expected ecoregions with more precip

Determinants and effects of sinus worm Skrjabingylus nasicola (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidae) infestation in invasive American mink Neovison vison in Germany.

Skrjabingylus nasicola (Leuckart, 1842) are geographically widespread nematodes that parasitize the nasal and frontal sinus cavities of smaller mustelids. As most prior work was solely based on the analysis of bone injuries of museum skull, little is known about the determinants and effects of infestation in the host species. Working on fresh skulls, we aimed to analyze infestation patterns in American mink (Neovison vison Schreber, 1777) from nine study areas in northern Germany and to identify factors that explained infestation prevalence and intensity in the host species. The prevalence (46

Host protective roles of type 2 immunity: parasite killing and tissue repair, flip sides of the same coin.

Metazoan parasites typically induce a type 2 immune response, characterized by T helper 2 (Th2) cells that produce the cytokines IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 among others. The type 2 response is host protective, reducing the number of parasites either through direct killing in the tissues, or expulsion from the intestine. Type 2 immunity also protects the host against damage mediated by these large extracellular parasites as they migrate through the body. At the center of both the innate and adaptive type 2 immune response, is the IL-4Rα that mediates many of the key effector functions. Here we highli

Verminous pneumonia and enteritis due to hyperinfection with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in a kitten.

Severe infestation with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus was identified in the lungs and small intestine of a 2-month-old kitten that died due to verminous pneumonia and enteritis. On clinical examination, the kitten had dyspnoea, pneumonia, pleural effusion, ascites and diarrhoea. An interstitial pattern was evident radiographically in the lungs. The kitten died before treatment could be instituted. On gross and histopathological examination, there was severe interstitial pneumonia and large numbers of A. abstrusus eggs and larvae were present in alveoli, together with fewer adult nematodes in smal

Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a coyote (Canis latrans) from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Tissue samples and feces were collected from a dead, adult female coyote (Canis latrans) found at the side of the road in late March 2003 in the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland, Canada. The coyote apparently died of vehicular-related trauma. Samples of lung, brain, heart, liver, and kidney were fixed in formalin and submitted for histologic examination. The entire remaining lung and heart also were submitted for examination. The coyote was diagnosed with moderate, multifocal, granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with eosinophilic vasculitis and many intralesional nematode eggs, larvae,

A redescription of Cylicocyclus triramosus (Nematoda: Strongyloidea): a parasite of the zebra, Equus burchelli antiquorum.

Cylicocyclus triramosus, a rare species of Cyathostominae from the southern African Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli antiquorum) is redescribed, and a neotype is proposed. The external leaf-crown of the species consists of 30 elements and the internal leaf-crown numerous small and clear elements. The buccal capsule is cylindrical, oval in cross section, and approximately 3 times as wide as deep. The thin walls of the buccal capsule taper anteriorly from a large ringlike, hoop-shaped thickening around the posterior margin. The dorsal gutter is nipple-shaped. The mouth collar is notched dorsall

Predictive Approach to Mapping Angiostrongylus cantonensis Nematode Distribution, Canary Islands, Spain.

The invasive nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) can cause eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Once restricted to Southeast Asia, A. cantonensis nematodes are now widespread across the tropics and have been reported in Europe. Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, and the Mediterranean region are emerging hotspots. We surveyed gastropods, rats, and lizards across Tenerife and detected the parasite in all host groups at 2.4%-41.6% prevalence. Using species distribution models, we identified precipitation seasonality as the main driver of habitat suitability; tree cover and climatic va

Biomphalaria glabrata (Say, 1818) as a paratenic host of Angiostrongylus vasorum (Baillet,1866) Kamensky, 1905.

Angiostrongylus vasorum parasitizes the pulmonary arteries and heart of dogs (definitive hosts - DHs). Various mollusk species act as intermediate hosts (IHs), becoming infected through ingestion and/or penetration of first-stage larvae (L1), which subsequently develop into second-stage larvae (L2) and then third-stage larvae (L3), the latter being infective to DHs. Additionally, paratenic hosts (PHs), such as frogs, chickens, and rats, can harbor L3. This study aimed to assess whether Biomphalaria glabrata could function as a PH for A. vasorum, identifying potential larval penetration routes,

Positive correlation of prevalence of Angiostongylis cantonensis in Parmarion martensi (semi-slug) with higher human neuroangiostrongyliasis (rat lungworm disease) caseloads in east Hawai'i Island.

Toward a better understanding of Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection within intermediate gastropod hosts, we evaluated prevalence of A. cantonensis in gastropods from east Hawai'i Island and Kaua'i, and used this data to begin to explore how gastropod infection may relate to human neuroangiostrongyliasis patterns in these regions. An overall infection prevalence of 43.3% was found among four of the eight species tested. Of the seven species tested from Kaua'i (n = 170) 12.9% were positive among three species, and of the two slug species tested from east Hawai'i island (n = 320) 59.4% tested

The Zoonotic Angiostrongylus cantonensis and the Veterinary Parasite Aelurostrongylus abstrusus Infecting Terrestrial Gastropods from Urban Areas of Macapá, Brazilian Amazon Region.

Metastrongyloidea includes nematodes that parasitize mammals, mainly infecting their respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and are responsible for emerging zoonosis in the world. Terrestrial mollusks are their main intermediate hosts, with few exceptions. Here we present the results of a malacological survey to know the distribution of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Macapá, Amapá, in the Brazilian Amazon region, after the report of a case of eosinophilic meningitis in 2018. Mollusks were collected in 45 neighborhoods between March 2019 and February 2020. They were identified, parasitological

Occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in domestic cats in Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil.

Aelurostrongylosis, caused by the metastrongylid nematode Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, is an underestimated feline respiratory disease. Cats infected by A. abstrusus may show subclinical to severe clinical signs. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus has a worldwide distribution. Nevertheless, studies on this parasite in Brazil are scarce, and most have been conducted in the southern regions. This study investigated the occurrence of A. abstrusus in cats in Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil, from April 2020 to February 2021. Three consecutive individual fecal samples from 101 cats were examined using Baermann and

Cardio-pulmonary parasites of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) in Germany.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, research on feline cardio-pulmonary parasites has considerably increased in Europe. Not only domestic cats (Felis catus), but also European wildcats (Felis silvestris) can serve as definitive hosts for these nematodes. The F. silvestris population in Germany has been growing rapidly within the last decades; therefore, the assessment of its cardio-pulmonary parasite status is of importance to unravel whether the wildcat population serves as a substantial reservoir for these nematodes and might pose a health threat to domestic cats. METHODS: As part of a nature co

Infection with the fox lungworm (Crenosoma vulpis) in two dogs from New England - Two clinical reports and updated geographic distribution in North America.

Crenosoma vulpis, the fox lungworm, is a helminth parasite endemic to the fox population of New England. Domestic dogs are susceptible to infection via ingestion of snails and slugs. Two dogs from New England were diagnosed with C. vulpis. The predominant clinical sign in both dogs was a chronic cough. Treatment with steroids and antibiotics only temporarily relieved clinical signs. Thoracic radiographs in both dogs revealed bronchial patterns. Endotracheal washes were performed in each dog revealing marked, mixed inflammation consisting mainly of neutrophils with eosinophils in lesser numbers

AcanR3990 qPCR: A Novel, Highly Sensitive, Bioinformatically-Informed Assay to Detect Angiostrongylus cantonensis Infections.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Ac), or the rat lungworm, is a major cause of eosinophilic meningitis. Humans are infected by ingesting the 3rd stage larvae from primary hosts, snails, and slugs, or paratenic hosts. The currently used molecular test is a qPCR assay targeting the ITS1 rDNA region (ITS1) of Ac. METHODS: In silico design of a more sensitive qPCR assay was performed based on tandem repeats predicted to be the most abundant by the RepeatExplorer algorithm. Genomic DNA (gDNA) of Ac were used to determine the analytical sensitivity and specificity of the best primer/probe c

First report of fatal autochthonous angiostrongylosis in a dog in Greece.

Canine angiostrongylosis caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum is a life-threatening disease which is emerging in regions of Europe. Thus, there is the merit for a continuous epidemiological surveillance in dog populations. This is the first description of a clinical autochthonous case of canine angiostrongylosis in Greece. A 7-month-old, male, mixed-breed dog was presented with progressively worsening anorexia, respiratory distress, coughing, bleeding diathesis and succumbed four days post admission. Gross post mortem examination revealed numerous nodular fistulated lesions in the lungs, and pulm

Angiostrongylus vasorum in 20 dogs in the province of Chieti, Italy.

After a case of Angiostrongylus vasorum (canine lungworm) was diagnosed in the province of Chieti (Italy) in early 2008, parasitological research was conducted to investigate the presence of the parasite in dogs in the area. A total of 178 dogs, 56 carcasses and 122 stool samples were examined between January and September 2008. The carcasses were examined for the presence of adult parasites in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery, and larval forms in the internal organ and brain tissues. The faeces were inspected for larval form L1 using three diagnostic methods that are currently used to
