The paper presents two cases of infection with Strongyloides stercoralis (in a 13-year-old boy and in a 93-year-old female), occurred in the Moscow Region, which is indicative of the resurgence of stronglyoidiasis in the Moscow Region. Although the likelihood of this infection in this region is little, nevertheless, strongyloidiasis should be borne in mind in examining patients who are not leaving for well-known endemic areas if they have an allergic reaction of unclear etiology, eosinophilia, and digestive disorders. In these cases, the syndromic-and-empiric approach to justifying and perform…

A 50-year-old Swiss male died from strongyloidiasis 8 weeks after renal allotransplantation. Past history revealed malaria at age 20 years, when the patient had stayed in tropical and subtropical areas, as well as pulmonary tuberculosis. Hypertension, erythrocyturia, proteinuria and unexplained episodes of blood eosinophilia were first noticed age 45, and 4 years later dialysis was started. A mild acute rejection crisis was successfully treated 4 weeks after transplantation. 2 weeks later, however, bilateral pneumonia developed. Despite vigorous antibiotic and tuberculostatic therapy the patie…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is a chronic parasitic infection caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. Severe cases such as, hyperinfection syndrome (HS) and disseminated strongyloidiasis (DS), can involve pulmonary manifestations. These manifestations frequently aid the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis. Here, we present the pulmonary manifestations and radiological findings of severe strongyloidiasis.
METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2014, all patients diagnosed with severe strongyloidiasis at the University of the Ryukyus Hospital or affiliated hospitals in Okinawa, Japan, were included in t…

We report the case of a 38-year-old woman with a 10-year history of ulcerative proctosigmoiditis. Two months after traveling to Morocco, she developed gastrointestinal symptoms accompanied by eosinophilia in blood tests. Four months later, she progressed to systemic illness with pulmonary involvement. A colonoscopy revealed aphthous ileitis with nonspecific histology suggestive of Crohn's Disease (CD). Ultimately, serology confirmed Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Strongyloidiasis is underdiagnosed in Spain, and its differentiation from CD presents a diagnostic challenge.

We herein report a case of ulcerative colitis (UC) exacerbated by strongyloidiasis. Parasites including Strongyloides stercoralis and Entamoeba histolytica can cause chronic gastrointestinal inflammation and long-lasting symptoms resembling UC. On the other hand, it is not well-known that such organisms can trigger the exacerbation of pre-existing UC. We would like to highlight the importance of recognition of strongyloidiasis in the management of UC patients who have lived in or migrated from endemic regions, such as Asia, Africa, and South America.

Most of the 30 to 100 million people infected with Strongyloides stercoralis have subclinical (or asymptomatic) infections. These infections are commonly chronic and longstanding. A change in immune status can increase parasite numbers, leading to hyperinfection syndrome, dissemination, and death if unrecognized. The use of corticosteroids and HTLV-1 infection are most commonly associated with the hyperinfection syndrome. Strongyloides adult parasites reside in the small intestine and induce immune responses that are like other nematodes. Definitive diagnosis of S stercoralis infection is base

Small bowel obstruction due to Strongyloides stercoralis is rare especially in immunocompetent individuals. We report a case of a 45-year-old man who presented with a history of severe abdominal pain, intermittent low-grade fever and vomiting. An upper GI endoscopy revealed a diffusely edematous second portion of duodenum and narrowing in the third part of duodenum with food residue in the stomach. Barium contrast upper-GI radiography revealed partial small-bowel obstruction. Duodenal biopsy specimens revealed Strongyloides stercoralis in the submucosa with inflammatory infiltrate. The patient

Strongyloides stercoralis is endemic in the southwestern islands Amami and Ryukyu in Japan. Systemic strongyloidiasis occurs in immunocompromised hosts. We report here on a 60-year-old patient with minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) without eosinophilia or HTLV-I infection. She was treated with corticosteroid for MCNS and died of disseminated strongyloidiasis. The patient developed systemic purpura, ileus, respiratory distress, malabsorption, pancytopenia, pulmonary hemorrhage and sepsis due to Escherichia coli before death. Massive infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis was disclose…

We report the case of a 51-year-old woman who presented with a confusing spectrum of systemic symptoms after starting steroid therapy for a rheumatological disorder. The diagnosis of disseminated strongyloidiasis was made after a delay of 2 weeks. This paper outlines the symptom complex with which this critically ill woman presented, the course of her disease and the treatment of her disseminated strongyloidiasis.
