Anticipating critical transitions in fear-mediated mutualistic ecological system: Effects of stochasticity and early warning signals.

Predators rarely forage with fixed efficiency; they cooperate, adjust their search effort to prey availability, and impose non-consumptive effects such as fear, while prey often respond through mutualistic associations with non-prey partners. Yet how these adaptive feedbacks collectively shape ecosystem resilience, critical transitions, and collapse in mutualistic communities remains unresolved within a unified theoretical framework. To address this gap, we develop a community-level mathematical model integrating prey-non-prey mutualism, cooperative hunting, prey-dependent predator search effi

Anesthetic Management of a Giant Thymolipoma Causing Near Total Lung Collapse: A Case Report.

Thymolipoma is a rare benign anterior mediastinal tumour. Although often clinically silent, it can lead to significant pressure effects on the airway, mediastinal structures and great vessels. Anaesthesia induction and the use of muscle relaxants in such patients may precipitate airway collapse and difficult bag-mask ventilation due to the size, location and weight of the mass. Haemodynamic instability, arrhythmias and injury to vital structures contribute to the perioperative challenge. Major postoperative concerns include pain management and reduction of postoperative pulmonary complications

Effects of hypertonic solutions on two species of human intestinal parasites during fecal examination.

Aim: Ova and parasite examination by flotation requires hypertonic solutions, which can damage the egg and cyst membranes, leading to false negatives. The authors investigated the harmful effects of ZnSO4 and C12H22O11 solutions on the ova and parasite examination. Materials & methods: The authors processed samples using the Three Fecal Test technique. Aliquots were floated in different pH levels, temperatures and solution densities. Results: Densities above 1.12 g/ml led structures to collapse after 6-10 min. pH neutralization of the ZnSO4 solution did not prevent the parasites from changing.

Severity-based evaluation of dynamic airway collapse and tracheobronchomalacia: integrated clinical, functional and bronchoscopic assessment with a diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm in a prospective cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) and tracheobronchomalacia are increasingly recognised causes of expiratory airflow limitation, although their clinical relevance remains a matter of ongoing debate, particularly regarding the threshold defining significant collapse. While a ≥50% reduction in airway lumen has been traditionally used, this cut-off lacks specificity. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, functional and endoscopic characteristics of dynamic airway collapse according to severity and to develop an integrated diagnostic-therapeutic approach. METHODS: A pros

Metal Ion-Triggered Collapsed Hydrogels as Materials for Bacterial Population Control.

Hydrogels are versatile soft materials extensively employed in applications ranging from biomedicine to environmental technologies owing to their high water content and tunable physicochemical properties. In this work, we describe a metal ion-induced collapse phenomenon in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-borate hydrogels triggered by Cu2+ cations, leading to a class of materials termed metal ion-triggered collapsed hydrogels (MitCH). Upon increasing the concentration of copper sulfate, conventional PVA-borate hydrogels undergo an abrupt contraction accompanied by water expulsion and formation of a r

The upper airway in obstructive sleep apnoea: state of the art.

The upper airway is a complex structure, prone to repetitive collapse in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This review discusses the pathophysiological aspects of OSA, with a focus on the anatomy and pathophysiology of upper airway obstruction. This disorder is characterised by different mechanisms that constitute its pathology, which may all contribute to apnoea presence and severity. These include pharyngeal anatomy, collapsibility, upper airway muscle responsiveness, loop gain and arousal threshold. Identification of interindividual differences in the underlying mechanisms of OSA offers promi

[Vertebroplasty: percutaneous augmentation of vertebrae].

Vertebroplasty presents a new method for fortification of structural impaired or partially collapsed vertebrae due to various pathological disorders. According to the original method published 15 years ago, acrylic bone cement is injected percutaneously into the vertebral body under local anesthesia and fluoroscopic guidance. Indications include osteoporotic fractures, benign tumors as vertebral hemangiomas or metastatic tumors affecting the spine. Reported results are good and complications are uncommon. This article reviews the new method for restoration of the collapsed vertebra and new cem

Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome.

This is a complex condition, recognized primarily in brachycephalic breeds, that results in varying degrees of upper airway obstruction. The signs consist of respiratory distress, stridor, reduced exercise tolerance, and in more severe cases, cyanosis and collapse. The inherent anatomy of the brachycephalic skull contributes to the development of these signs. Such anatomic features include: a shortened and distorted nasopharynx, stenotic nares, an elongated soft palate, and everted laryngeal saccules. The increased negative pressure created in the pharyngolaryngeal region, as a result of these

Head rotation improves airway obstruction, especially in patients with less severe obstructive sleep apnea without oropharyngeal collapse.

PURPOSE: Head rotation is thought to have an effect on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. However, keeping the head rotated fully during sleep is difficult to maintain, and the effect of head rotation is not the same in all OSA patients. Thus, this study aimed to identify whether less head rotation has an effect on airway patency and determine the responder characteristics to the head rotation maneuver (HRM). METHODS: We recruited 221 patients who underwent overnight polysomnography and drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) in a tertiary hospital from June 2019 to July 2020. Airway patency

Dual-Space Topological Isomorphism and Maximization of Predictive Diversity for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation.

Most existing unsupervised domain adaptation methods rely on explicitly or implicitly aligning the features of source and target domains to construct a domain-invariant space, often using entropy minimization to reduce uncertainty and confusion. However, this approach faces two challenges: 1) Explicit alignment reduces discriminability, while implicit alignment risks pseudo-label noise, making it hard to balance structure preservation and alignment. 2) Sole reliance on entropy minimization can lead to trivial solutions in UDA, where all samples collapse into a single class. To address these is

Importance of the epiphyseal ring in OLIF stand-alone surgery: a biomechanical study on cadaveric spines.

PURPOSES: To explore the function of endplate epiphyseal ring in OLIF stand-alone surgery using a biomechanical model to reduce the complications of endplate collapse and cage subsidence. METHODS: In total, 24 human cadaveric lumbar function units (L1-2 and L3-4 segments) were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group was implanted with long fusion cages which engaged with both inner and outer regions of epiphyseal ring (Complete Span-Epiphyseal Ring, CSER). Those engaged with only the inner half of epiphyseal ring were the second group (Half Span-Epiphyseal Ring, HSER). Each group was

A structured pre-procedural risk mitigation strategy for ultra-high-risk TAVR in a nonagenarian with extreme aortic valve calcification: a case report using a balloon-expandable valve and proactive ECMO backup.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in nonagenarians with extensive aortic valve calcification is associated with a substantial risk of intraprocedural circulatory collapse. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a structured pre-procedural risk mitigation strategy integrating a balloon-expandable valve system and a pre-emptive, "wet-prepared" extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) backup. A 97-year-old man with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (peak velocity = 4.76 m/s; aortic valve calcium volume = 1178 mm³) underwent transfemoral TAVR using a structured a

Constructing a patient-specific computer model of the upper airway in sleep apnea patients.

OBJECTIVE: The use of computer simulation to develop a high-fidelity model has been proposed as a novel and cost-effective alternative to help guide therapeutic intervention in sleep apnea surgery. We describe a computer model based on patient-specific anatomy of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects wherein the percentage and sites of upper airway collapse are compared to findings on drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE). STUDY DESIGN: Basic science computer model generation. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element techniques were undertaken for model development in a pilot study of four O

The mandibular swing-lock complete denture for patients with microstomia.

Regardless of cause, the treatment of an edentulous patient with microstomia is difficult and often ingenious. Prosthodontic treatment modalities previously described are reviewed. A new type of prosthesis, the collapsible mandibular swing-lock complete denture, is introduced. The prosthesis incorporates a cast cobalt-chromium framework with a lingual hinge and a conventional labial swing-lock. This combination allows the prosthesis to be collapsible while maintaining structural durability. Advantages include ease of insertion and removal while providing maximum coverage for support, retention

Pseudoelasticity of SrNi2P2 Micropillar via Double Lattice Collapse and Expansion.

The maximum recoverable strain of most crystalline solids is less than 1% because plastic deformation or fracture usually occurs at a small strain. In this work, we show that a SrNi2P2 micropillar exhibits pseudoelasticity with a large maximum recoverable strain of ∼14% under uniaxial compression via unique reversible structural transformation, double lattice collapse-expansion that is repeatable under cyclic loading. Its high yield strength (∼3.8 ± 0.5 GPa) and large maximum recoverable strain bring out the ultrahigh modulus of resilience (∼146 ± 19 MJ/m3), a few orders of magnitude higher th

Varying the counter ion changes the kinetics, but not the final structure of colloidal gels.

We show that, while the gelation of colloidal silica proceeds much faster in the presence of added KCl than NaCl, the final gels are very similar in structure and properties. We have studied the gelation process by visual inspection and by small angle X-ray scattering for a range of salt and silica particle concentrations. The characteristic times of the early aggregation process and the formation of a stress-bearing structure with both salts are shown to collapse onto master curves with single multiplicative constants, linked to the stability ratio of the colloidal suspensions. The influence

Strut Size-Dependent Compressive Behavior and Failure Mechanisms of Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion NiTi Octahedral Porous Scaffolds.

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys are attractive for functional and biomedical applications due to their shape memory effect, superelasticity, and favorable corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. In this work, the influence of strut size on the compressive response of laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) fabricated NiTi ortho-octahedral porous scaffolds was systematically investigated using combined experiments and finite element simulations. Four scaffold designs with identical unit-cell size (2 mm) but different strut sizes (280, 320, 360, and 400 μm) were fabricated, and their forming q

Disproportionate Mediastinal Shift From an Isolated Right Middle Lobe Collapse: A Case Report.

Mediastinal displacement toward the side of lung volume loss is a well-recognized radiographic feature of atelectasis. Significant mediastinal shift most commonly occurs when larger lung segments, such as the right upper or lower lobes, collapse. Because the right middle lobe (RML) contributes a relatively small proportion of total lung volume, isolated RML collapse typically produces minimal mediastinal deviation. The case in this report is of an 83-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure (CHF), who presented with progressive dyspnea and i

Strongly Modified Mechanical Properties and Phase Transition in AlPO4-17 Due to Insertion of Guest Species at High Pressure.

The porous aluminophosphate AlPO4-17 with a hexagonal erionite structure, exhibiting very strong negative thermal expansion, anomalous compressibility, and pressure-induced amorphization, was studied at high pressure by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction in the penetrating pressure transmitting media N2, O2, and Ar. Under pressure, these guest species were confirmed to enter the pores of AlPO4-17, thus completely modifying its behavior. Pressure-induced collapse in the xy plane of AlPO4-17 no longer occurred, and this plane exhibited close to zero area compressibility. Pressure-induce

[Relapsing polychondritis: a possible cause of difficult extubation].

We report the case of a 54-year-old woman suspected of relapsing polychondritis who underwent a nasal septum biopsy under general anaesthesia. Tracheal intubation was unremarkable, but extubation attempts failed because of upper airway inspiratory collapse induced ventilatory distress. Definitive tracheostomy placement was mandatory. Cartilage biopsy confirmed severely developed relapsing polychondritis. Even though relapsing polychondritis is rare, anaesthesiologists should be aware of this pathology and preanaesthetic evaluation may focus on particular risks associated with upper airway cart
