Professional educators' experiences teaching internationally educated nurses attending bridging programs: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: To aid in the recertification and integration process of internationally educated nurses (IENs), many countries have organized bridging programs to provide support and education and align their knowledge and competence with local requirements. The importance and relevance of these programs for IENs are highlighted in related research. However, the experiences of university teachers, supervisors in clinical placement, and administrators organizing these programs are scarcely explored. The aim of this article is to explore the experiences of professional educators engaged in bridging

Designing for generalism, courage, and systems: a curriculum scholarship account of an integrated family medicine and primary care block.

BACKGROUND: Pre-clerkship Family Medicine teaching often covers content well but does too little with experiential immersion, structured reflection, and the open engagement with clinical uncertainty that defines generalist work in practice. We describe the partnership-based redesign of the COM353 Family Medicine and Primary Care block at Alfaisal University, Riyadh, with student-reported outcomes from the first delivered cohort. The paper is offered as a worked account of how academic-academic and academic-service partnerships can themselves become curriculum. PEDAGOGICAL FRAMEWORK: The redes

Process-Oriented, Behaviorally Anchored Assessment of Clinical Reasoning in Large Language Models and the Effect of Extended Thinking: Protocol for a Prospective, Multigroup, Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Most clinical reasoning evaluations in large language models (LLMs) score only the final answer, usually multiple-choice accuracy, which explains little about model reasoning. Two developments stress this gap: reasoning-optimized models are now common, and several expose an explicit extended thinking control. Whether that deliberation improves the reasoning process remains untested with a validated instrument. OBJECTIVE: This protocol introduces and aims to validate the Rapid Evaluation Assessment of Clinical Reasoning Tool (REACT)-AI, a Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS) w

Application of expert systems to mammographic image analysis.

A prototype expert system was designed for differentiation of 16 circumscribed breast abnormalities utilizing findings identified by a human observer from X-ray mammograms, clinical data, and patient history. An off-the-shelf expert system shell served as the foundation for the rule base. The system runs on standard microcomputer hardware. Preliminary results suggest the expert system may be valuable in improving the ability of relatively unskilled observers to screen X-ray mammograms. Overall, radiology residents with limited experience in mammographic image analysis obtained a diagnostic acc

Comparative effectiveness of morning and evening aerobic exercise on weight loss and physical fitness in Chinese college students with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Physiological and metabolic processes are influenced by biological rhythms. However, whether exercising in the morning or evening is more beneficial, given that these periods are two key time windows to incorporate exercise, has remained unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of morning versus evening exercise on weight loss, morphometric indicators, and physical fitness among Chinese college students with overweight and obesity. METHODS: A total of 31 students with overweight and obesity (18-22 years old) were randomly assigned to exercise in the morning (7 am to 10

An Appy That Needs Epi: An Atypical Presentation of Anaphylaxis.

AUDIENCE: This simulation is intended for 4th year medical students. BACKGROUND: Shock is the result of inadequate circulation and failure to perfuse tissues, leading to cellular and organ dysfunction.1 Anaphylactic shock specifically is a type of distributive shock secondary to an IgE (immunoglobulin E) dependent reaction, which can result in respiratory compromise and cardiovascular collapse. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (NIAID/FAAN) laid out three diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of anaphylaxis. Hallucinations and inhibitory functioning in healthy young adults with high and low levels of hypomanic personality traits.

INTRODUCTION: Hallucinations in schizophrenia and hallucination proneness in healthy young adults are associated with a common cognitive mechanism, namely impaired inhibitory control. Hallucinatory-like experiences also seem related to hypomanic symptoms in non-clinical participants; however, the mechanisms involved are unknown. We sought to examine self-reported hallucinatory/anomalous perceptual experiences in students selected for high versus low levels of hypomanic personality traits, and whether hypomania is characterised by deficient inhibitory control. METHOD: Undergraduate students wi

An Anomalous Origin of the Accessory Splenic Artery and its Significance in Surgical and Radiological Contexts: A Case Report.

During the routine dissection classes for undergraduate medical students, we encountered a rare anatomical variation concerning the aberrant origin and course of the accessory splenic artery. The splenic artery is one of the direct branches of the coeliac trunk. During its tortuous course, it supplies the pancreas with greater curvature of the stomach and spleen. The accessory splenic artery originating from the main trunk of splenic artery, too, follows the same tortuous course while running through the lesser sac and supplies the posterior part of the spleen via the splenophrenic ligament. High- versus low-frequency exercise for depression in university students: a single-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The core affect (CA) hypothesis posits that exercise serves either to increase positive affect or reduce negative affect. One rarely examined implication of the CA hypothesis is that multiple short exercise bouts distributed throughout the week, rather than one long training bout, would lead to better outcomes. METHODS: Fifty-four university students with depression were randomly allocated to one of three groups: (1) a control group participating in weekly health education sessions, (2) a low-frequency exercise training (LFET) group running once weekly for 60 min, and (3) a high-f

Belief in Unconscious Repressed Memory Persists.

On the basis of converging research, we concluded that the controversial topic of unconscious blockage of psychological trauma (i.e., repressed memory) remains very much alive in clinical, legal, and academic contexts. In his commentary, Brewin (this issue, p. 443) conducted a cocitation analysis and concluded that scholars do not adhere to the concept of unconscious repression. Furthermore, he argued that previous survey research did not specifically assess unconscious repression. Here, we present critical evidence that runs counter to his claims. First, we inspected his cocitation analysis a

European Projects for Patients with Dementia and Their Caregivers.

As we all know there is no treatment that can stop or delay the progression of dementia. The treatment we use is only symptomatic. EFNS (European Federation of Neurological Societies) recommendations for dementia prevention by Sorbi et al. (2012) concluded that there is no treatment, no lifestyle, which could have an effect on prevention or delay of onset of different forms of dementia until today. The future studies in prevention must recruit younger people, larger sample, and for longer period. The last 10 years we have run, in collaboration with organizations in different European countries

Spectrum of outpatient illness in a school-based cohort in Haiti, with a focus on diarrheal pathogens.

Currently, there are only limited data available on rates of major diagnostic categories of illnesses among Haitian children. We have established a cohort of 1,245 students attending schools run by the Christianville Foundation in the Gressier/Leogane region of Haiti, for whom our group provides primary medical care. Among 1,357 clinic visits during the 2012-2013 academic year, the main disease categories (with rates per 1,000 child years of observation) included acute respiratory infection (ARI) (385.6 cases/1,000 child years of observation), gastrointestinal complaints (277.8 cases/1,000 chi
