Social phobia in adults with stuttering.

OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluated features of social anxiety in a group of adult stutterers to explore the soundness of the DSM-IV requirement that social phobia not be diagnosed in patients who stutter if their phobia relates to their stuttering. METHOD: They conducted diagnostic interviews and verbal fluency assessments with 16 consecutive adults seeking speech therapy for stuttering. Patients also completed scales measuring social phobia symptoms and associated disability. RESULTS: When DSM-IV criteria were modified to permit a diagnosis of social phobia if phobic symptoms were clearly exc…

[Biochemical studies in stuttering in children].

Selected biochemical investigations were performed in 53 stuttering children aged 5-12, and in control group of 22 clinically healthy, non-stuttering children aged 6-16. Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium ions in the serum were determined according to the pharmacopoeia++ "Zweites Arztneimittelbuch++ der DDR (1983)". A special anamnestic questionnaire helped to exclude metabolic diseases and/or gastro-intestinal disorders. As a result of the study, significant differences between the Mg-ion concentrations in both groups could be demonstrated. In 47% of the stuttering children studied, hyp…

Stuttering priapism in a patient with neurosyphilis.

We recently encountered a case of stuttering priapism in a 41-year-old patient with neurosyphilis. Priapism very rarely has a neurogenic cause, and to our knowledge, priapism caused by neurosyphilis has not been reported previously in the literature. Our aim was to report this case and systematically review the related literature.

The concomitant problems of young stutterers.

This investigation was designed to survey a sample of 650 speech-language pathologists providing services in elementary schools and to obtain information on the concomitant problems of stutterers in their caseloads. The results of the survey revealed that 32% of all the young stutterers were free of any other problems. The remaining 68% were reported as having some other type of problem (articulation, language, voice, emotional disturbance, neurological handicap, etc.) in addition to their stuttering. Results also present the type of therapy received by each subgroup. Limitations of the survey…

Social anxiety and life impact in adults who clutter and stutter: a comparative study with pure stuttering.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is frequently reported to coexist with stuttering; however, its occurrence in the context of cluttering remains largely unexplored. This study determined whether SAD co-occurs in individuals with disfluency after differentiating those with cluttering with stuttering from those with stuttering alone. Forty participants aged ≥18 years with a chief complaint of stuttering-like disfluencies (SDF) were included. Based on established criteria, participants were categorized into two groups: cluttering with stuttering (n = 14) and stuttering alone (n = 26). All participan…

Effectiveness of Stuttering Modification Treatment in School-Age Children Who Stutter: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effectiveness of the stuttering modification intervention Kinder Dürfen Stottern (KIDS) in school-age children who stutter. METHOD: Seventy-three children who stutter were included in this multicenter, two-group parallel, randomized, wait-list controlled trial with a follow-up of 12 months. Children aged 7-11 years were recruited from 34 centers for speech therapy and randomized to either the immediate-treatment group or the 3 months delayed-treatment group. KIDS was provided by 26 clinicians who followed a treatment manual. Although the primary outcome me…

Exploratory randomized clinical study of pagoclone in persistent developmental stuttering: the EXamining Pagoclone for peRsistent dEvelopmental Stuttering Study.

INTRODUCTION: Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by repetitions, prolongation, and blocks of sounds, syllables, or words. No pharmacological treatments are approved for use in stuttering, and the most common form of treatment is speech therapy. This study was designed to assess the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of pagoclone during 8 weeks of double-blind treatment followed by a 1-year open-label extension in patients who stutter. METHODS: An 8-week, multicenter, parallel-group, 2-arm, randomized (ratio 2:1 pagoclone-placebo), double-blind study …

Stuttering and neurodiversity: A question of ableism or anti-ableism? One central premise: The person who stutters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this position statement is to lay the foundation for an open-minded discourse by embracing neurodiversity in assessment and treatment of the person who stutters and to bring attention to the central premise: the person who stutters. METHOD: A reflection on recent publications and conference presentations that discuss an unnuanced and narrow-minded ableist versus anti-ableist approach to the assessment and treatment of people who stutter. Many of those are not data-bound and lead to confusion and a perception of professional failure, certainly among junior speech-langua

Internet searches conducted by people who stutter: association with speech-language therapy and severity of stuttering.

Stuttering is a fluency disorder that is multidimensional because it involves more than speech difficulties. People who stutter can use the Internet to find out more about their condition and connect with other people in the same position, yet in Croatia, there are not nearly as many online sources on stuttering or as many possibilities to connect with other people who stutter as in the USA or Great Britain. If one does not speak English well, a lot of information about stuttering will simply be denied to them, especially to those who have never received speech therapy. The present study, the …

Is covert articulation impaired in developmental stuttering?

Adults who stutter (AWS) have been reported to show difficulties in nonword repetition tasks, where covert articulation supports the maintenance of phonological information during the retention interval. However, it remains unclear whether these difficulties reflect impaired covert articulation, auditory-phonological encoding, overt articulation, or aspects of executive function/attention. It is also unknown whether such difficulties characterize any, some, most, or all AWS. To address these questions, we administered spoken and written versions of a phonological memory task-both using printed

Large-scale genome-wide analyses of stuttering.

Developmental stuttering is a highly heritable, common speech condition characterized by prolongations, blocks and repetitions of speech. Although stuttering is highly heritable and enriched within families, the genetic architecture is largely understudied. We reasoned that there are both shared and distinct genetic variants impacting stuttering risk within sex and ancestry groups. To test this idea, we performed eight primary genome-wide association analyses of self-reported stuttering that were stratified by sex and ancestry, as well as secondary meta-analyses of more than one million indivi…

Drug-induced stuttering: A comprehensive literature review.

Drug-induced stuttering (DIS) is a type of neurogenic stuttering (NS). Although DIS has not been reported as frequently as other cases of NS in the literature, it is not a negligible adverse drug reaction (ADR) which can significantly affect the quality of life if not treated. This literature review aims to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of DIS and suggests some pathophysiological mechanisms for this ADR. Relevant English-language reports in Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were identified and assessed without time restriction. Finally, a total of 6…

Weak Vestibular Response in Persistent Developmental Stuttering.

Vibrational energy created at the larynx during speech will deflect vestibular mechanoreceptors in humans (Todd et al., 2008; Curthoys, 2017 … cal as regards gravitoinertial function, and is interpreted with regard to speech-motor function in stuttering. There is overlap between brain areas receiving vestibular innervation, and brain areas identified as important in studies of persistent developmental stuttering. These include the auditory brainstem, cerebellar vermis, and the temporo-parietal junc …

Stuttering: Understanding and Treating a Common Disability.

Childhood-onset fluency disorder, the most common form of stuttering, is a neurologic disability resulting from an underlying brain abnormality that causes disfluent speech. Stuttering can lead to significant secondary effects, including negative self-perception and negative perception by others, anxiety, and occasionally depression. Childhood-onset fluency disorder affects 5% to 10% of preschoolers. Early identification of stuttering is important so that therapy can begin while compensatory changes to the brain can still occur and to minimize the chances of the patient developing social anxie…

Acquired stuttering due to recurrent anaplastic astrocytoma.

Acquired (neurogenic) stuttering is a rare phenomenon seen after cerebral infarction or brain injury. Aetiology of this symptom is unclear, but recent evidence supports that it is a disturbance in the left hemispheric neural network involving the interplay between the cortex and basal ganglia. We present the case of a patient who develops acquired stuttering after a recurrence of a right temporoparietal anaplastic astrocytoma (WHO grade III). We also review other cases of acquired stuttering and known anatomical correlates.

Novel tactile feedback to reduce overt stuttering.

Stuttering is generally considered to be a speech disorder that affects ∼1% of the global population. Various forms of speech feedback have been shown to reduce overt stuttered speaking, and in particular, second speech signal through speech feedback has drastically reduced utterances of stuttered speech in adults with persistent stuttering. This study reports data for increased overt fluency of speech in an adult stuttering population, whereby the vocalization of the speaker is captured by a microphone or an accelerometer, signal processed, and returned as mechanical tactile speech feedback t…
