Theoretical study of formic acid-sulfur dioxide dimers.

We report the first theoretical study of noncovalent and covalent interactions in formic acid (FA)-SO(2) complexes. Using ab initio and DFT model chemistries, five stable noncovalent complexes were identified, as well as a covalent adduct, formic sulfurous anhydride HOSO(2)CHO. syn-FA is predicted to form two nonplanar bidentate complexes with SO(2): the more stable one contains a normal hydrogen bond donated by OH, and the less stable one contains a blue-shifted hydrogen bond donated by CH. Both are stabilized by charge transfer from FA to SO(2). anti-FA forms three planar complexes of nearly

Vasodilatation of sulfur dioxide derivatives and signal transduction.

The vasodilatation of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) derivatives on the rat thoracic aortic rings and its cell signal transduction pathway were studied. The levels of cAMP, cGMP, PGI(2), TXA(2) and activities of PKA and adenylyl cyclase (AC) in the rings exposed to SO(2) derivatives were determined. The results indicated that SO(2) derivatives could dose-dependently relax the isolated rat aorta rings with or without endothelium precontracted by NE, no difference was found between the rings with and without endothelium; Levels of cAMP, PGI(2), AC activity and PKA activity in the aortic rings were signi…

Optical sensor for sulfur dioxide determination in wines.

A method for the determination of free and total sulfur dioxide in wines, based on the use of an optical sensor that employs a dichlorobis(diphenylphosphino)methane dipalladium I complex [Pd(2)(dppm)(2)Cl(2)] immobilized in a PVC membrane plasticized with o-nitrophenyloctylether (o-NPOE) is described. A sensing membrane [4.2% Pd(2)(dppm)(2)Cl(2), 20.8% PVC, and 75% o-NPOE] was adapted to the tip of a bifurcated optical fiber bundle to perform reflectance measurements at 550 nm. The detection system consisted of two cells (40 mL), which hold the sample solution (plus reagents) and the optical s…

Solubility of sulfur dioxide in chlorine-treated wastewater.

The solubility of sulfur dioxide in chlorine-treated wastewater was investigated. An experimental study was carried out to measure the solubility of sulfur dioxide in chlorine-treated wastewater over the temperature range of 10-40 degrees C. The highest solubility of sulfur dioxide was found to be equal to 1.098 x 10(-3) mole/L at 10 degrees C, whereas the lowest value of 6.17 x 10(-4) mole/L was obtained at 40 degrees C. The solubility of sulfur dioxide was correlated as a second-order dependence on temperature. The measured solubility data of sulfur dioxide in chlorine-treated wastewater wer…

Pulmonary injuries associated with acute sulfur dioxide inhalation.

This report describes an industrial accident in which 5 previously healthy persons were acutely exposed to very high concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Of these 5 subjects, the 2 with the highest exposure died immediately; histologic examination of the lungs revealed extensive sloughing of the mucosa of large and small airways along with hemorrhagic alveolar edema. The 3 survivors were evaluated with pulmonary function tests performed at regular intervals. One subject subsequently developed symptomatic severe airway obstruction unresponsive to bronchodilators; another subject developed asymptom…

Advances in the research of sulfur dioxide and pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a fatal disease caused by progressive pulmonary vascular remodeling (PVR). Currently, the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and progression of PVR remain unclear, and effective therapeutic approaches to reverse PVR and PH are lacking. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the endogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2)/aspartate transaminase system has emerged as a novel research focus in the fields of PH and PVR. As a gaseous signaling molecule, SO2 metabolism is tightly regulated in the pulmonary vasculature and is associated with the development of PH as it is invol…

Development of an optimized intermolecular potential for sulfur dioxide.

A new force field for sulfur dioxide, capable of predicting accurately the vapor-liquid equilibria, critical properties, vapor pressure, and heats of vaporization is presented. The new force field reproduces the saturated liquid densities, vapor pressures and heats of vaporization to within 0.5, 2, and 2% of experiment, respectively. The predicted critical properties and the normal boiling point are in excellent agreement with experimental results. Pair distribution functions are calculated for the S-S, S-O, and O-O interactions are in close agreement with neutron and X-ray scattering experime…

[Mechanisms of tolerance to sulfur dioxide and sodium metabisulfite].

Inhalation of sulphur dioxide (250 ppm), (SO2) or sodium metabisulfite (80 mM) (MBS) aerosol or perfusion with MBS (3 mM) induced a reduction in compliance and conductance in the isolated, perfused and ventilated guinea pig lung. Pretreatment of the lung with sodium sulfite (3 mM), a dissolution product of SO2 and MBS, reduced the bronchoconstriction induced by SO2 and MBS. Bronchoconstriction induced by SO2 and MBS in associated to increased levels of Calcitonin gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) in the perfusate effinent, indicating activation of sensory nerves. The release of CGRP induced by SO2 a

Airway responses to sulfur dioxide and methacholine in asthmatics.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a common air pollutant found in the workplace. Considerable variation exists in the airway responses of asthmatics to the inhalation of SO2. To determine if such variation among asthmatics is related to nonspecific airway reactivity, we compared the threshold doses of methacholine and SO2 required to produce significant changes in flow rates at 60% of the vital capacity below total lung capacity on the partial expiratory flow volume curve in a group of eight mildly asthmatic subjects. A significant correlation between the dose of SO2 and the dose of methacholine require…

Stability of patulin to sulfur dioxide and to yeast fermentation.

The affinity of patulin for sulfur dioxide (SO2) is much less than was previously reported and is of little significance at the SO2 concentrations (below 200 ppm) used in the processing of apple juice and cider. However, at concentrations of 2000 ppm SO2 and 15 ppm patulin, combination was 90% complete in 2 days. Removal of SO2 liberated only part of the patulin, which suggests that 2 mechanisms are involved: one reversible (opening the hemiacetal ring) and one irreversible (SO2 addition at the double bond). Test with 2 yeasts used in English commercial cider making confirmed that patulin is e…

[Effect of sulfur dioxide on broiler performance and health].

Investigations were conducted, with the view to establishing short-time effects of SO2 alone and in combination with power station fly-ash as well as long-time effects of SO2 on broiler. The experimental concentrations up to 16 X 330 ppm did not reveal any deterimental impact upon live weight or feed consumption. Histological, haematological, and clinico-chemical tests indicated that damage was caused only by highly repetitive short-time exposure to very high SO2 concentrations (330 ppm), such damage being reflected in slight increase of erythrocyte count, lowered colour index, rise in SGPT ac
