Prenatal VPA Exposure and Changes in Sensory Processing by the Superior Colliculus.

Disorders involving dysfunctional sensory processing are characterized by an inability to filter sensory information, particularly simultaneously arriving multimodal inputs. We examined the effects of prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a teratogen linked to sensory dysfunction, on the behavior of juvenile and adult rats, and on the anatomy of the superior colliculus, a critical multisensory integration center in the brain. VPA-exposed rats showed deficits in colliculus-dependent behaviors including startle response, prepulse inhibition, and nociceptive responses. Some deficits reversed

Vascular factors in the neurotoxic damage caused by 1,3-dinitrobenzene in the rat.

Using a 3 x 10 mg/kg dose schedule of 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) over two days in Fischer rats, we have found the following changes in vascular function and structure during the early phase of the symmetrical brain stem lesions. 1. Marked increase in cerebral blood flow generally but especially in the inferior colliculi, from 6 h after the final dose of DNB. 2. Increasing incidence of petechial haemorrhages in inferior colliculi, cerebellar roof, vestibular and superior olivary nuclei from 12 h. 3. Focal leakage of horseradish peroxidase and many sleeve-like arteriolar haemorrhages seen in vibra

Clinicopathological study of atypical motor neuron disease with vertical gaze palsy and ballism.

The case of a 38-year-old patient with rapidly progressing motor neuron disease, complicated by major dysfunction of the extrapyramidal system and of vertical gaze is described. Neuropathological examination revealed a degenerative process that severely affected the lower motor neurons, as well as the neurons of the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, the nucleus of Darkschewitsch, the nucleus interstitialis of Cajal, the colliculi superiores, and the pallidum. The long tracts were unaffected at all levels of the brain stem and spinal cord. There was no convincing evidence for the presence

Efferent projections of the area postrema demonstrated by autoradiography.

The efferents connections of the area postrema (AP) have been studied autoradiographically following iontophoretic injections of 3H-glycine or 3H-leucine into the area postrema. Precise control of the diffusion of the labelled amino acids injected iontophorectically into the AP was made using the technique of sectioning with a cryostat. AP projects to a great number of structures. Projections to nucleus tractus solitarius (NFS), dorsal vagal nucleus, nucleus intercalatus, nucleus praepositus hypoglossi, nucleus hypoglossal, the mesencephalic nucleus of V nerve, locus coeruleus and superior and

Additive convergence for visuomotor decisions.

In a recent study, Slangewal et al. explored principles of visuomotor decision-making in larval zebrafish. Visuomotor choices were revealed to be largely additive, integrating visual motion, luminance level, and luminance change during cue conflict. Brain-wide imaging mapped parallel feature circuits within the optic tectum that converge in the anterior hindbrain. Single-cell identity and morphology analyses refined this map, linking behavioral algorithms to candidate circuit implementations.

Description of Encephalon Morphology of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) From Brazil.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a cichlid species native to Africa and is widely farmed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, making it one of the most commercially important aquaculture species. Despite its significance, there is still a lack of detailed anatomical descriptions of its brain. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive anatomical and histological characterisation of the O. niloticus brain. Brain samples were collected from adult fish (n = 19) raised in a commercial aquaculture system in Brazil. The brain morphology of O. niloticus exhibits the gener

Retinal origin of orientation but not direction selective maps in the superior colliculus.

Neurons in the mouse superior colliculus ("colliculus") are arranged in ordered spatial maps. While orientation-selective (OS) neurons form a concentric map aligned to the center of vision, direction-selective (DS) neurons are arranged in patches with changing preferences across the visual field. It remains unclear whether these maps are a consequence of feedforward input from the retina or local computations in the colliculus. To determine whether these maps originate in the retina, we mapped the local and global distribution of OS and DS retinal ganglion cell axon boutons using in vivo two-p

Cross-modal exposure restores multisensory enhancement after hemianopia.

Hemianopia is a common consequence of unilateral damage to visual cortex that manifests as a profound blindness in contralesional space. A noninvasive cross-modal (visual-auditory) exposure paradigm has been developed in an animal model to ameliorate this disorder. Repeated stimulation of a visual-auditory stimulus restores overt responses to visual stimuli in the blinded hemifield. It is believed to accomplish this by enhancing the visual sensitivity of circuits remaining after a lesion of visual cortex; in particular, circuits involving the multisensory neurons of the superior colliculus. Impairment but not abolishment of express saccades after unilateral or bilateral inactivation of the frontal eye fields.

Express saccades are a manifestation of a visual grasp reflex triggered when visual information arrives in the intermediate layers of the superior colliculus (SCi), which in turn orchestrates the lower level brainstem saccade generator to evoke a saccade with a very short latency (~100 ms or less). A prominent theory regarding express saccades generation is that they are facilitated by preparatory signals, presumably from cortical areas, which prime the SCi before the arrival of visual information. Here, we test this theory by reversibly inactivating a key cortical input to the SCi, the fronta

Instantaneous Midbrain Control of Saccade Velocity.

The ability to interact with our environment requires the brain to transform spatially represented sensory signals into temporally encoded motor commands for appropriate control of the relevant effectors. For visually guided eye movements, or saccades, the superior colliculus (SC) is assumed to be the final stage of spatial representation, and instantaneous control of the movement is achieved through a rate code representation in the lower brain stem. We investigated whether SC activity in nonhuman primates (Macaca mulatta, 2 male and 1 female) also uses a dynamic rate code, in addition to the

The centrifugal visual system of a palaeognathous bird, the Chilean Tinamou (Nothoprocta perdicaria).

The avian centrifugal visual system, which projects from the brain to the retina, has been intensively studied in several Neognathous birds that have a distinct isthmo-optic nucleus (ION). However, birds of the order Palaeognathae seem to lack a proper ION in histologically stained brain sections. We had previously reported in the palaeognathous Chilean Tinamou (Nothoprocta perdicaria) that intraocular injections of Cholera Toxin B subunit retrogradely label a considerable number of neurons, which form a diffuse isthmo-optic complex (IOC). In order to better understand how this IOC-based centr

Spatial updating in monkey superior colliculus in the absence of the forebrain commissures: dissociation between superficial and intermediate layers.

In previous studies, we demonstrated that the forebrain commissures are the primary pathway for remapping from one hemifield to the other. Nonetheless, remapping in lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) across hemifield is still present in split brain monkeys. This finding indicates that a subcortical structure must contribute to remapping. The primary goal of the current study was to characterize remapping activity in the superior colliculus in intact and split brain monkeys. We recorded neurons in both the superficial and intermediate layers of the SC. We found that across-hemifield remapping w

Neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of reflexive and voluntary saccades in non-human primates.

A multitude of cognitive functions can easily be tested by a number of relatively simple saccadic eye movement tasks. This approach has been employed extensively with patient populations to investigate the functional deficits associated with psychiatric disorders. Neurophysiological studies in non-human primates performing the same tasks have begun to provide us with insights into the neural mechanisms underlying many cognitive functions. Here, we review studies that have investigated single neuron activity in the superior colliculus (see glossary), frontal eye field, supplementary eye field,

Uncrossed retino-geniculate and retino-tectal projections in the hereditary unilaterally microphthalmic rats.

The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (CGLd) of the hereditary unilaterally microphthalmic rats showed a diminution of volume and an increase of neuronal density on the contralateral side of the vestigial eye without the optic nerve (about 60 and 160% of the normal, respectively; P less than 0.001). No significant changes were observed in the ipsilateral CGLd. Uncrossed retino-CGLd and -tectal projections were studied using the anterograde axonal transport of HRP in adult rats with the congenital unilateral microphthalmia. Aberrant expansions of the uncrossed retinal projection widely covered

Map of retinal position onto the cross section of the optic pathway of goldfish.

The position of a retinal cell is defined by the two polar coordinates: r, the distance from the optic disc, and theta, the angular (or clock-face) position. Axons of similar theta value were labeled by the punctate application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to optic axons in the retina, and axons of similar r-value were labeled by the application of this same marker to a tectal fascicle. Labeled axons were traced in serial transverse sections of the optic pathway from the retina to the tectum to learn the map of the retinal surface onto the cross section of the pathway. Retinas were flat-mou

Correlations between the morpho-functional organization of some parts of visual analyzer and ecology in Chelonia: II. Morpho-functional characteristics of the visual nerve and tectum after unilateral enucleation.

The morpho-functional characteristics of the optic nerve and tectum opticum were studied electronmicroscopically and electrophysiologically after unilateral enucleation in 4 Chelonia species. Different types of degeneration of the myelinated and unmyelinated optic fibers and their endings in the tectum are revealed. Comparison of the types and times of the degeneration of retinal axons and their terminals with changes of the tectum evoked potentials at different times after enucleation gives ground to conclude that myelinated fibers produce nerve endings degenerating on the dark pattern and un

[Experimental study of visual projection specificity in microphthalm and monophthalm embryos and adults of Gallus domesticus L].

Research was carried out into the visual projections of embryos and chickens of Gallus domesticus L. who had undergone early optic vesicle removal and into microphthalmy or monophthalmy with ipsilateral optic fibres resulting from such removal. The architectonics of primary visual centres (nuclei ectomamillaris, geniculatus lateralis, lateralis anterior superficialis synencephali, griseus tectalis and the tectum opticum superficiale) and of the isthmo-opticus nucleus were compared with the architectonics of the same centres in anophthalms. From this research it can be seen that:--1. Optic fibr

Distinct Developmental Programs Displayed by the Xenopus Tadpole Accessory Optic System and Retinotectal Projection.

The retinotectal projection, the direct synapse between retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) of the eye and tectal neurons of the optic tectum, is a major component of the amphibian visual system. A model of circuit formation, this projection has been studied in detail. There are, however, other retinorecipient targets that also comprise the amphibian visual system such as the pretectum and ventral midbrain tegmentum. Understanding how these other components of the visual system form and function will lead to a more comprehensive understanding of how the visual system, as a whole, assembles and funct

Processing of fearful faces exhibits characteristics of subcortical functions.

A subcortical pathway is thought to have evolved to facilitate fear information transmission, but direct evidence for its existence in humans is lacking. In recent years, rapid, preattentive, and preconscious fear processing has been demonstrated, providing indirect support for the existence of the subcortical pathway by challenging the necessity of canonical cortical pathways in fear processing. However, direct support also requires evidence for the involvement of subcortical regions in fear processing. To address this issue, here we investigate whether fear processing reflects the characteri
