African swine fever virus serotype-specific proteins are significant protective antigens for African swine fever.

African swine fever (ASF) is an emerging disease threat for the swine industry worldwide. No ASF vaccine is available and progress is hindered by lack of knowledge concerning the extent of ASFV strain diversity and the viral antigens conferring type-specific protective immunity in pigs. Available data from vaccination/challenge experiments in pigs indicate that ASF protective immunity may be haemadsorption inhibition (HAI) serotype-specific. Recently, we have shown that two ASFV proteins, CD2v (EP402R) and C-type lectin (EP153R), are necessary and sufficient for mediating HAI serological speci…

Seroprevalence and risk factors for swine influenza zoonotic transmission in swine workers from northwestern Mexico.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the transmission of swine influenza through occupational exposure and to assess some risk factors for zoonotic transmission in workers from commercial farms in Mexico. Seroprevalence to swine influenza subtypes was determined by hemagglutinin inhibition assay and was higher in exposed (E), in comparison with unexposed (UE) participants (P<0.05). Percentages of seropositivity between UE and E were 28.57% and 19.35% to A/NewCaledonia/20/99 (H1N1), 68.25% and 33.87% to A/Panama/2001/99-like (H3N2), 1.58% and 12.9% to A/Sw/England/163266/87 (H3N2),…

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pneumonitis mimicking swine influenza pneumonia during the swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic.

BACKGROUND: We present a young woman with a negative medical history who presented with acute systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pneumonitis mimicking swine influenza (H1N1) pneumonia. Because this case occurred during the H1N1 pandemic, the initial diagnostic impression was of H1N1 pneumonia. METHODS: Although her clinical and laboratory findings were consistent with the diagnosis of H1N1 pneumonia, e.g., fever, sore throat, dry cough, arthralgias, myalgias, thrombocytopenia, relative lymphopenia, and elevated serum transaminases, some findings suggested an alternate diagnosis, e.g., leukope…

Evaluation of Cryopreserved Primary Swine Macrophages as a Substrate for African Swine Fever Virus Replication.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease of pigs that poses serious economic consequences to the swine industry due to its high mortality rate and rapid spread. Currently, the identification of infectious ASF virus (ASFV) is the confirmatory test when clinical samples are positive for ASFV by any other diagnostic methods. Detection of infectious ASFV requires the availability of primary swine macrophage cultures as a cell substrate. We demonstrate here that cryopreserved swine primary macrophages are a suitable cell substrate for the detection, isolation a…

Japanese encephalitis circulation pattern in swine of northern Vietnam and consequences for swine's vaccination recommendations.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the largest worldwide cause of infectious encephalitis in humans and is caused by a mosquito-borne flavivirus. JE transmission cycle involves Culex mosquitoes, pigs and aquatic birds as principal vertebrate amplifying hosts. JE infection is responsible for reproductive disorder in pigs when occurring after sexual maturity. In tropical areas, JE is endemic and the majority of pigs get infected before the age of 6 months. However, in subtropical areas, pigs may be infected after sexual maturity and thus experience clinical signs, inducing economic loss. The study ai

Swine influenza-modified pulmonary microbiota.

Influenza A virus (IAV) remains a major health concern in both humans and animals, with pigs serving as key reservoirs for generating novel … erial infections. This study underscores the relevance of microbiota shifts during IAV infection in swine and highlights the importance of understanding microbial dynamics in respiratory disease progression. Additionally, we present a novel, rapid, and practical experimental pipeline based on ONT long-read sequencing to investigate the respiratory micro …

Swine flu: a Birmingham experience.

By the beginning of July 2009 the West Midlands had seen more cases of novel H1N1 influenza (swine flu) than any other region in the U.K. Over a three-week period almost 850 people presented to Heartlands Hospital with flu-like symptoms. Of those admitted 52 adults were subsequently confirmed as having H1N1 infection. Most were younger than 30 and not from traditional influenza risk groups. The main risk factor for severe disease was asthma, and to a lesser extent pregnancy and obesity. Seven patients were admitted to intensive care and five developed an acute lung injury requiring prolonged a…

Swine immunity to selected parasites.

Swine parasitism exerts a significant economic impact worldwide. In the United States, the greatest losses are due directly or indirectly to the costs of zoonotic parasitisms. Three of the six most common foodborne parasitic diseases of humans in the United States are associated with pork consumption. These include toxoplasmosis, taeniasis or cysticercosis (caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium), and trichinellosis. Toxoplasmosis is of particular concern because of the fulminating disease that occurs in immunocompromised people. Generalizations and extrapolations of information derived fro…

[Hemorrhagic enteropathies in fattening swine].

It is reported on 34 fattening pigs with hemorrhagic enteropathy or blood in the intestine, which were submitted for necropsy to the Veterinary Ambulance Schwarzenbek. Only those animals were included in this study, which had lesions in the small intestine or small and large intestine. Cases of swine dysentery with the lesions being restricted to the large intestine were not considered here. No common cause of hemorrhagic enteropathy was found. In four cases there was an intestinal torsion. In one animal the blood in the intestine originated from a gastric ulcer. On 25 of the 34 pigs further e…

congenital heart diseases in swine.

One hundred twenty-two congenital cardiac anomalies were diagnosed in 83 pigs (4.35%) during necropsies of 1906 pigs from one day to four ye … riosus in one pig, and pulmonary stenosis in one pig. The pathological features of the anomalies in swine were similar to those described in small animals and in man. The findings indicate that spontaneous porcine cardiac anomalies might provide models for cardiovascular investigators to study the etiology and pathogenesis of congenital heart diseases i …

Lymphocyte stimulation in swine dysentery.

In lymphocyte stimulation studies of pigs affected with swine dysentery (SD) all of the pigs gave significant response (P less than 0.05) to soluble antigen from Treponema hyodysenteriae. Swine infected with virulent or attenuated T. hyodysenteriae gave significant lymphocytic response 3 or 6 weeks after infection; uninfected pigs did not give a similar lymphocytic response. The delayed hypersensitivity (DH) skin test, in which soluble T. hyodysenteriae antigen preparation was used, detected only 3 out of 14 SD-affected swine. The lymphocyte stimulation assay by detection of protein synthesis …

Haemophilus parasuis infection in swine.

Septicemic disease occurred in 49 of 126 pigs several days after being transported 80 km. All affected pigs died. The main changes in acutely affected pigs were skin discoloration, pulmonary edema, arthritis, meningitis, and renal glomerular thrombosis. In peracute cases, gross findings were minimal. Haemophilus parasuis was isolated from multiple organ sites in most affected pigs. Haemophilus parasuis was isolated from nasal swab specimens from 17 of 20 clinically normal pigs on the farm of origin. Fatal acute septicemia was reproduced in 2 pigs by intravenous or intratracheal exposure to an
