The authors point out three cases of appendicular taeniasis disease into an analytical retrospective study of 5,000 appendicectomies. In these 3 cases the parasite does not induce important processes level with the appendix. The localisation of the parasite is very rare.

Taeniasis, primarily caused by Taenia solium or Taenia saginata, is the most common zoonotic infection affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Although appendicitis related to this parasitic infection is rare, it represents an important differential diagnosis in patients presenting with abdominal pain. This case report highlights a unique case of appendicitis associated with Taenia infestation, emphasizing the need for clinical awareness of potential parasitic origins in appendicitis. A 35-year-old Ethiopian female, non-diabetic and non-hypertensive, presented with a one-day history of moderate …

Taenia solium infections (taeniasis/cysticercosis) are a major scourge to most developing countries. Neurocysticercosis, the infection of the human nervous system by the cystic larvae of this parasite, has a protean array of clinical manifestations varying from entirely asymptomatic infections to aggressive, lethal courses. The diversity of clinical manifestations reflects a series of contributing factors which include the number, size and location of the invading parasites, and particularly the inflammatory response of the host. This manuscript reviews the different presentations of T. solium…

Neurocysticercosis (NC) is a serious public health problem in Taenia solium endemic areas and in some immigrants and international travelers. A key intervention in preventing NC is elimination of taeniasis by chemotherapy. Currently, two safe and effective taenicides, namely niclosamide and praziquantel, are available. Both are on WHO Essential Drug list, but are often inaccessible in T. solium endemic areas. Natural remedies, still widely used in some endemic areas, are frequently carcinogenic or highly toxic and as such should be discontinued. Chemotherapeutic intervention to control T. soli…

From 1974 to 1989, a total of 24,500 aborigines at 67 villages in ten mountainous districts/towns in Taiwan were examined for the Taiwan Taenia infection and 12% were found to be infected. In order to define the clinical manifestations of taeniasis caused by the Taiwan Taenia, 1661 aborigines in ten mountainous districts were surveyed. The overall clinical rate was 76%. The clinical rate was highest among Atayal aborigines (81%), followed by Bunun (66%) and Yami (61%) aborgines and lowest among Ami aborigines (40%). Among 1153 infected people, 10% had passed gravid segments in the faeces for l…

Studies relating to the treatment of human taeniasis in the Philippines using Atabrine, bithionol, and mebendazole are reviewed. Cure rates of 93.7% for Atabrine, 85%-100% for bithionol, and 84.62% for mebendazole are reported. Aside from these studies, recent experience in the treatment of Taenia saginata infections at the Department of Parasitology, College of Public Health, is also reported. Twenty patients referred to the department were treated, 3 with bithionol, 17 with praziquantel. Of the 17 patients treated with praziquantel, the study reported cure rates of 47-88.24%.

Early experimental studies suggested that doses of 1 to 5 mg of praziquantel (PZQ) per kg are effective against several intestinal cestodiases. The usually recommended single dose of PZQ in human taeniasis is 5 or 10 mg/kg. A study in T. saginata taeniasis showed a full efficacy at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg. A field study confirmed that a dose between 3.4 and 7.5 mg/kg was effective in expulsion T. solium tapeworms in man. A dose of 2.5 mg of PZQ per kg would be safer and more economical in population-oriented interventions aiming at control of T. solium taeniasis in man.

Blood serotonin level, 5-HIAA in 24 h urine, serum immunoglobulins-IgG, IgM, IgA, percentage of lymphocytes T and B in rosette test were ascertained in 3 groups of patients with taeniosis, treated with Radeverm (32 patients), Praziquantel (22 patients) and Yomesan (10 patients). Primary hyperserotoninemia and higher level of 5-HIAA in post-treatment values were not uniformly differentiated. The same tendency was observed in post-treatment values of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes T and B as compared with values before treatment.

The course of an infection with T. saginata has been studied for two years on a volunteer who had swallowed a 16-20 week-old Cysticercus bov … bservation both for the immediate study of the field case and an elucidation of the epidemiology of taeniasis has been evaluated in the present paper.
