BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is an inherited peripheral neuropathy that is associated with a cavovarus foot deformity that leads to impaired mobility and pain. Structural differences in the hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot that contribute to this cavovarus deformity have not been fully characterized or described between disease subtypes. This study aimed to identify structural differences in the foot associated with CMT and between demyelinating and axonal subtypes in a retrospective cross-sectional study.
METHODS: In this study, we use statistical shape modeling, a mathematic

INTRODUCTION: Pes cavovarus is a three-dimensional (3D) foot deformity. New 3D semi-automatic measurements utilising weightbearing computerised topography (WBCT) images have recently been proposed to assess hindfoot alignment, but reliability in pes cavovarus has never been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the foot ankle offset (FAO), calcaneal offset (CO) and hindfoot alignment angle (HAA) in pes cavovarus.
METHODS: Anonymised WBCT datasets from 51 feet (17 Charcot-Marie-Tooth related cavovarus, 17 idiopathic cavovarus and 17 co

BACKGROUND:: Standard open calcaneal osteotomies to correct hindfoot malalignment have been associated with high complication rates, including nerve damage and wound infection. This has resulted in the development of minimally invasive techniques such as the percutaneous endoscopically assisted calcaneal osteotomy (PECO), which in cadaver studies has been shown to be potentially safer than open surgeries. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of PECO in a clinical setting, with regard to neurovascular injury rates, infection, and short-term radiographic and func

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc (tarsometatarsal joint) injuries are relatively rare, accounting for less than 1% of all fractures, and as many as 20% of subtle Lisfranc injuries are missed at the initial patient presentation. An undiagnosed Lisfranc injury can have devastating consequences to the patient. Therefore, any factor that can raise a clinician's index of suspicion to make this diagnosis is potentially important. The cavus foot has been associated with various maladies of the lower extremity, but to our knowledge, it has not been reported to be associated with Lisfranc injury.

Club foot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common developmental disorder of the foot, affecting 1 per 1,000 live births. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the anatomical bony arrangement of the clubfoot deformity radiologically and to correlate this arrangement with the Pirani clinical scoring system. This descriptive, analytical study was conducted in three centres in Sudan. It recruited all the patients of both sexes with CTEV attending these centres, and excluding children on conservative cast and those who already had surgery. Data were collected using structured ques

Idiopathic talipes equinovarus (ITEV), or isolated clubfoot, is a common developmental anomaly that is characterized by a rigid foot, adducted forefoot, cavus midfoot, equinovarus of the hindfoot, and hypoplastic calf musculature. The etiology of this common birth defect is largely unknown, but genetic factors have been implicated in population and family studies and maternal smoking during pregnancy has been identified as an environmental risk factor. The biotransformation of exogenous substances, such as tobacco smoke, is modulated by numerous genes including N-acetylation genes, NAT1 and NA

BACKGROUND: The cavovarus foot is a complex 3-dimensional deformity. Although a multitude of techniques are described for its surgical management, few of these are evidence based or guided by classification systems. Surgical management involves realignment of the hindfoot and soft tissue balancing, followed by forefoot balancing. Our aim was to analyze the pattern of residual forefoot deformities once the hindfoot is corrected, to guide forefoot correction.
METHODS: We included 20 cavovarus feet from 16 adult patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth who underwent weightbearing CT (mean age 43.4 year

BACKGROUND: Cole osteotomy is performed in patients having a cavus deformity with the apex of the deformity in the midfoot. Correction of the deformity at this midfoot level improves foot and ankle stability by creating a plantigrade foot. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiographic results of six feet (five patients) that underwent Cole midfoot osteotomy (2011-2015).
METHODS: The patients had different etiologies (spastic cerebral palsy, burn sequelae, spina bifida, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease). Dorsal and slightly laterally based transverse wedge osteotomy through the navi

INTRODUCTION: Baropodometrical digital techniques map the pressures exerted on the foot plant during both static and dynamic loadings. The study of the distribution of such pressures makes it possible to evaluate the postural and locomotory biomechanics together with its pathological variations.
METHODS: From January 2011 to August 2016 we conducted a cross sectional study in order to diagnose flatfoot and hollowfoot through the baropodometric analysis, and collecting additional information such as gender and the age. 7816 static and dynamic baropodometric tests and radiological exams of the

BACKGROUND: Pes cavovarus is a foot deformity that can be idiopathic (I-PC) or acquired secondary to other pathology. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common adult cause for acquired pes cavovarus deformity (CMT-PC). The foot morphology of these distinct patient groups has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study was to assess if morphological differences exist between CMT-PC, I-PC and normal feet (controls) using weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of WBCT scans performed between May 2013 and June 2017 was undertaken. WBCT s

For pre-operative osteoarthritis (OA) patients with varus knee, previous studies showed inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted this study to better identify the association of Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) score and mechanical alignment. 44 patients (51 knees) with constitutional varus knee caused by combined deformities (LDFA (lateral distal femoral angle) > 90°and MPTA (medial proximal tibial angle) < 85°)) were selected and analyzed with a mean follow-up period of 14 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). From January 2015 to December 2016, patients were collected consecuti

BACKGROUND: Subtle cavus foot (SCF) is an entity characterized by mild cavus. However, few studies have examined whether a SCF may be a risk factor for chronic ankle instability (CAI).
METHODS: This study included 116 patients who underwent lateral ankle ligament repair (modified Broström operation) for CAI and 105 controls. We used the standing lateral radiograph, so compared calcaneal pitch angle, Meary's angle, heights of the first and fifth metatarsal bases, and fibular positions between groups. Additionally, two observers subjectively rated the standing lateral radiographs for the presen

BACKGROUND: The complex deformities in cavovarus feet of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease are difficult to evaluate. The aim of this study was to quantify the initial standing alignment correction achieved after joint-sparing CMT cavovarus reconstruction using pre- and postoperative weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT).
METHODS: Twenty-nine CMT cavovarus reconstructions were retrospectively analyzed. Three-dimensional measurements were performed using semiautomated software (Bonelogic 2.1) to investigate changes in sagittal, axial, and coronal parameters. Pre- and postoperative data were

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common musculoskeletal entity that affects 1-2 per 1000 of live births worldwide. Most are idiopathic with a typical deformity of midfoot cavus, forefoot adductus, hindfoot varus, and equinus. Controversy exists whether CTEV results primarily from in-utero soft-tissue abnormality or the defect is in the osteocartilage anlagen. This fetus study aimed to elucidate the gross anatomical morphology and morphometry of bones, joints, and soft tissue in CTEV compared with the normal foot. This comparative cross-sectional study done on 12 normal feet and four

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), often known as clubfoot, is one of the most common congenital deformities of the foot and ankle, affecting one in every 1,000 live births. The deformity has four components: ankle equinus, hindfoot varus, forefoot adductus, and midfoot cavus. The Ponseti casting technique of CTEV management has proven to be more effective, generating higher positive outcomes and lesser complications than conventional surgical methods.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital centre in southern Rajasthan, India. Twenty cases wit

INTRODUCTION: Pes planovalgus (PPV) is a complex three-dimensional deformity of which routine radiographs provide only a two-dimensional analysis.
HYPOTHESIS: Angles and other radiographic parameters of the foot in children and adolescents, when studied on both the dorsoplantar and the lateral view, can be used to establish a radiographic classification system for PPV that provides useful therapeutic guidance in clinical practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective single-centre study was conducted on 65 feet in 35 patients aged 7 to 18 years and having adequate ossification. All patient

An orthopaedic syndrome that apparently had not been reported previously was identified in twenty-three children. Characteristics shared by all twenty-three children included Hispanic descent, residence in Puerto Rico, bilateral dislocation of the hip, dislocated radial heads, short stature, and other osseous anomalies. Twelve dislocated hips in six patients were not treated. All of these hips were functioning satisfactorily at the time of the review, but only four of the children had reached skeletal maturity. Sixteen hips in eight patients remained reduced after closed reduction. Of these ei

BACKGROUND: Naviculectomy was originally described for resistant congenital vertical talus deformity but was later expanded to use in rigid cavus deformity. This study reviews the operative outcomes of complete excision of the navicular for recurrent deformity in the talipes equinovarus (TEV) population.
METHODS: After institutional review board approval, all patients undergoing naviculectomy at a single institution were identified. Clinical, radiographic, and pedobarographic data (minimum 2 years' follow-up) were reviewed.
RESULTS: Twelve patients (14 feet) with TEV from 1984 to 2019 were i
