Teaching safety skills to high school students with moderate disabilities.

Teaching students with disabilities to respond appropriately to potentially dangerous situations is a useful skill that has received little research attention. This investigation taught 3 students with moderate mental retardation to remove and discard broken materials (plates, glasses) safely from (a) a sink containing dishwater, (b) a countertop, and (c) a floor. A 4th student was instructed on the sink task only. A multicomponent treatment package was used to teach the skills. Simulated materials were used initially and were replaced with broken plates and glasses. A multiple probe design wa

Rapid training of a community job skill to nonvocal adults with autism: an extension of intensive teaching.

We evaluated an intensive program in a simulated format for rapidly teaching a job skill to nonvocal adults with autism. Following baseline probes with a new work task of assembling mailing boxes at a publishing company, 3 supported workers individually received repeated teaching sessions at a simulated work site. All workers met criterion with 1 day of simulation teaching, with subsequent criterion level performance upon returning to the job (1 worker required booster trials). Intensive teaching did not occasion problem behavior nor unhappiness indices. Improved work performance also occurred

The development of a clinical skills centre.

Guidelines produced by the General Medical Council of Great Britain have emphasised the importance of the development of the skills and attitudes appropriate for a junior doctor. Medical schools are in the process of reforming their curricula accordingly. The development of these skills is made increasingly difficult by changes such as short admissions to hospital, increased care in the community, and reduced resources. This article outlines the development of a clinical skills centre as a multidisciplinary unit to improve clinical skills teaching with the aid of up-to-date technology and educ

Insights and opportunities from materials chemistry research at primarily undergraduate institutions in the U.S.

Materials chemistry research at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) in the United States is often characterized by the constraints faculty face: limited instrumentation, smaller research groups, heavier teaching loads, and rapid student turnover. This Perspective argues that PUI materials chemistry research is better understood not as a diminished form of research university science, but as a distinct and productive research mode with its own logic and strengths. Drawing on over 130 studies from more than 40 institutions, we survey contributions across energy conversion and storage, so

How I Teach Mechanical Ventilator Waveform Analysis: A Focus on Normal Ventilator Waveforms.

Identification and management of patient-ventilator asynchronies is a fundamental skill for the management of mechanical ventilation and often requires interpretation of mechanical ventilation waveform scalars. However, teaching mechanical ventilation waveform analysis can be challenging for educators due to the complexity of the material. In this entry of How I Teach, we provide an approach to teaching the concept of "normal" mechanical ventilator waveforms as an introduction to the broader topic of patient-ventilator asynchronies. We stress that intimate knowledge of normal mechanical ventil

Utilizing artificial intelligence to increase the readability of patient education materials in pediatric neurosurgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT 4o, to revolutionize the readability of patient education materials in pediatric neurosurgery. The American Medical Association and the National Institutes of Health recommend that educational materials be written at a 3rd- to 7th-grade reading level for accessibility. However, existing resources often exceed this range, hindering comprehension for many patients. METHODS: This study analyzed 38 patient education materials on hydrocephalus, spina bifida, tethered cord syndrome, cerebral palsy

Patient Educational Materials for Pheochromocytoma Exceed Recommended Readability Level: An Analysis Across Three Independent Reading Instruments.

Patient education is a critical component of effective medical care; > 50% of patients seek medical information from online sources. The recommended reading level is sixth grade. This study examines reading level of current online educational resources for patients with pheochromocytoma. A review of 50 online patient educational materials related to pheochromocytomas was performed. Using three validated instruments: Flesch Reading Ease (FRE), Simplified Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), and Gunning Fog Index (GFI) scores, the reading grade level was calculated, and Spearman correlations were per

Disparities between public health educational materials and the scientific evidence that smokeless tobacco use causes cancer.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: We reviewed 4 dozen health education brochures on the dangers of smokeless tobacco (ST) use, printed between 1981 and 2001 and available to the public in 2002. Collectively, these brochures state that ST use causes oral leukoplakia, other oral conditions, and cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, lung, breast, prostate, bladder, and kidney. We then reviewed the scientific literature to determine whether these claims were substantiated. RESULTS: Only for oral leukoplakia and several oral conditions is the evidence persuasive for caus

Flexible sigmoidoscopy: screening for colorectal cancer.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is an important screening procedure because of its ability to detect early changes in the distal colon. The 60-cm flexible sigmoidoscope provides excellent visualization with minimal discomfort to patients. Successful sigmoidoscopy requires adequate patient preparation, proper equipment and an experienced examiner who can recognize both normal and abnormal findings. Complications arising from sigmoidoscopy are rare, but patients may experience some cramping, gas or watery stools. Screening and primary preventive measures, including regular exercise and increased dietary

HELLP syndrome: recognition and perinatal management.

HELLP, a syndrome characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzyme levels and a low platelet count, is an obstetric complication that is frequently misdiagnosed at initial presentation. Many investigators consider the syndrome to be a variant of preeclampsia, but it may be a separate entity. The pathogenesis of HELLP syndrome remains unclear. Early diagnosis is critical because the morbidity and mortality rates associated with the syndrome have been reported to be as high as 25 percent. Platelet count appears to be the most reliable indicator of the presence of HELLP syndrome. The D-dimer tes

Heart murmurs in pediatric patients: when do you refer?

Many normal children have heart murmurs, but most children do not have heart disease. An appropriate history and a properly conducted physical examination can identify children at increased risk for significant heart disease. Pathologic causes of systolic murmurs include atrial and ventricular septal defects, pulmonary or aortic outflow tract abnormalities, and patent ductus arteriosus. An atrial septal defect is often confused with a functional murmur, but the conditions can usually be differentiated based on specific physical findings. Characteristics of pathologic murmurs include a sound le

Esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula.

Esophageal atresia, with or without tracheoesophageal fistula, is a fairly common congenital disorder that family physicians should consider in the differential diagnosis of a neonate who develops feeding difficulties and respiratory distress in the first few days of life. Esophageal atresia is often associated with other congenital anomalies, most commonly cardiac abnormalities such as ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus or tetralogy of Fallot. Prompt recognition, appropriate clinical management to prevent aspiration, and swift referral to an appropriate tertiary care center h
