Diagnosis of a tracheal tear by use of an oxygen analyzer in a dog with cervical trauma.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7.75-year-old sexually intact male Welsh Terrier was examined because of cervical soft tissue wounds and an inability to maintain hemoglobin oxygen saturation without oxygen supplementation following a dog attack. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 2-cm-long penetrating wound that extended into a large open pocket was identified on the left ventral aspect of the dog's neck. The dog was anesthetized and underwent advanced imaging, the findings of which suggested that the trachea was intact. However, when the cuff of the endotracheal tube was deflated during the dog's recovery from anesth

[Tear gas and eye injuries].

In the course of the last year, the Eye Clinic, Ullevål hospital has treated six cases of corneal injury caused by violent use of tear gas spray cannisters. In some cases there was total abrasion of the corneal epithelium, which could take several weeks to heal. We want to draw attention to this "weapon", the use of which seems to be spreading among young people.

Health impacts of chemical irritants used for crowd control: a systematic review of the injuries and deaths caused by tear gas and pepper spray.

BACKGROUND: Chemical irritants used in crowd control, such as tear gases and pepper sprays, are generally considered to be safe and to cause only transient pain and lacrimation. However, there are numerous reports that use and misuse of these chemicals may cause serious injuries. We aimed to review documented injuries from chemical irritants to better understand the morbidity and mortality associated with these weapons. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review using PRISMA guidelines to identify injuries, permanent disabilities, and deaths from chemical irritants worldwide between January 1,…

The relative risk of police use-of-force options: evaluating the potential for deployment of electronic weaponry.

An electronic weapon, the Taser M26, has recently entered the use-of-force continuum for police officers in England and Wales and is currently licensed for use by authorised firearms officers only. The aim of this report was to assess the relative risk of injury to officers and subjects of police use-of-force options and to evaluate whether the current positioning of the M26 in the use-of-force hierarchy is appropriate. We analysed use-of-force data from Northamptonshire Police Force and M26 field use data from TASER International. We found officer injury rates associated with M26 deployment w

[Morphological findings in the rabbit cornea after tear gas cauterization (author's transl)].

Solutions of various concentrations of chloracetophenone (dissolved in 1, 1, 1, trichlorethane) were trickled on the corneas of rabbits. The substance was either applied to the center or to the limbus, or simultaneously to the center and limbus of the cornea. After surgical removal of the cornea on day 21, the alterations were examined by a light microscope. When chloractephenone was applied to the middle of the cornea, signs of intensified epithelial regeneration were observed, even to the point of a severe granulating and necrotic infection with ulceration. The severity of these changes depe

Occupational contact dermatitis due to 2-chloracetophenone tear gas.

2-Chloracetophenone (CN) is widely used as tear gas by police and civilians for self-defence. It may affect the eyes, respiratory system and skin, sometimes causing serious injuries. Both irritative and allergic contact dermatitis have been described. We report three police officers who experienced accidental escape of CN from their professional tear gas canisters. All of them showed localized dermatitis at the site of contact to CN, while widespread lesions appeared after 4 days in one case. Patch tests with the original involved tear gas dissolved in acetone (at 0.1-0.0001%) indicated an all

The effect of a bellows leak in an Ohmeda 7810 ventilator on room contamination, inspired oxygen, airway pressure, and tidal volume.

We investigated the effect of a small bellows leak (bellows full at end-expiration) on inspired oxygen fraction (Fio(2)), exhaled tidal volume (Vt), airway pressure, and room contamination in an oxygen-driven anesthesia ventilator (Ohmeda 7810, Madison, WI). CO(2) concentration at the ventilator exhalation valve, Fio(2), Vt, and airway pressure were measured (n = 3) while ventilating a CO(2)-producing test lung at 8 breaths/min and an inspiratory/expiratory ratio of 1:2, with and without a bellows leak (4-mm-long tear). Set Vt was 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mL. Fresh gas flow (FGF) was 0.3 L/min

Tear gas exposure and its association with respiratory emergencies in infants and older adults during the social uprising of 2019 in Chile: an observational, longitudinal, repeated measures study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if extensive use of tear gas during the Chilean social uprising of 2019 was associated with a higher frequency of respiratory emergencies and bronchial diseases in a residential vulnerable population. DESIGN: Observational, longitudinal, repeated measures study. SETTINGS: Six healthcare centres (one emergency department and five urgent care centres) in the city of Concepción, Chile during 2018 and 2019. PARTICIPANTS: This study was conducted on daily respiratory emergencies and diagnosis. Daily frequency of urgency and emergency visits are administrative data, publicl

Chromatographic analysis of the traces of 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile with passive adsorption from the headspace on Tenax TA and Carbotrap 300.

The main purpose of the presented research was to check if CS agent (Chlorobenzylidenomalononitrile CAS 2698-41-1) can be separated from the forensic samples using passive adsorption from the headspace on the adsorption tubes and, if so, what are the optimal conditions of this process. Two different adsorbents were checked (adsorption tubes filled with Tenax TA and adsorption tubes filled with Carbotrap 300). Three different packages (gastight bags by Ampac, Nylon bags by BVDA and twist-off jars) were tried and the temperature range checked was 30°C-105°C. This research demonstrated CS is not

Baby Shampoo to Relieve the Discomfort of Tear Gas and Pepper Spray Exposure: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Oleoresin capsicum (OC) or pepper spray, and tear gas (CS) are used by police and the military and produce severe discomfort. Some have proposed that washing with baby shampoo helps reduce this discomfort. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled study to determine if baby shampoo is effective in reducing the severity and duration of these effects. Study subjects included volunteers undergoing OC or CS exposure as part of their police or military training. After standardized exposure to OC or CS all subjects were allowed to irrigate their eyes and skin ad lib
