In order to assess the effect of steroid on thallium-201 uptake by glioma, 201Tl single-photon emission tomography was performed before and after steroid administration in four patients with recurrent malignant glioma. We have investigated the thyroid uptake of Tl-201 in 37 patients with various types of goiter, and in six with normal thyroids. Significant thallium uptake was found in all cases in which there was thyroid enlargement, including Graves' disease, toxic thyroid nodule, primary hypothyroidism, simple goiter, Hashimoto's disease, thyroid carcinoma, and thyroid adenoma. Thallium-201 (201Tl) scintigraphy is one of the imaging methods used in the detection of various tumors including brain metastasis. We evaluated a patient with meningeal carcinomatosis from breast cancer by using 201Tl single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Meningeal spread of a tumor was noted on enhanced CT. SPECT revealed tumor localization in meningeal carcinomatosis. These results suggest that SPECT with 201Tl may be useful in detecting meningeal carcinomatosis from breast cancer.

A patient with pulmonary actinomycosis who unexpectedly showed focal uptake of technetium-99m-hexakis-2-methoxy isobutyl isonitrile and thallium-201 is presented. The appearance of the lesion on the chest radiograph and x-ray CT scan resembled a mediastinal tumor. The diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis was achieved by histopathologic examination of the surgically removed mass.

Two cases of mediastinal localization of parathyroid adenoma are presented, in which technetium-thallium subtraction scintigraphy yielded a positive result. Both patients had already undergone a negative surgical neck exploration. We suggest that, in case of negative subtraction scintigraphy and negative surgical exploration in proven primary hyperparathyroidism, subtraction scintigraphy should be repeated with emphasis on the superior mediastinum, and in all cases, the use of a non-zoom, large field of few procedure is recommended for technetium-thallium subtraction scintigraphy.

To assess the agreement of human interpretation of analog thallium myocardial perfusion images, four experienced interpreters evaluated 100 images on two occasions using a form designed to limit reader variability.
