Science of heat mapping: Thermography in musculoskeletal disorders.

Musculoskeletal injuries are among the most common causes of disability worldwide, with early detection and appropriate intervention critical to minimizing long-term complications. Infrared thermography (IRT) has emerged as a non-invasive, real-time imaging modality that captures superficial temperature changes reflecting underlying physiological processes such as inflammation and vascular alterations. This review explores the fundamental principles of medical thermography, differentiates between passive and active approaches, and outlines key technological advancements including artificial in…

Use of Infrared Thermography in Visualizing Erythema Migrans.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive imaging technology that visualizes heat patterns on the surface of the body. IRT measures deviations from baseline body temperature that correspond to areas of increased peripheral perfusion. The use of IRT in Lyme disease is novel. The present study presents three case examples and explores IRT as a tool for detecting and understanding the erythema migrans (EM) lesions in patients diagnosed with Lyme disease. Examination of these examples revealed these lesions as round or oval areas of increased heat and prominent venous drainage. IRT images are …

Thermography as a Method for Bedside Monitoring of Infantile Hemangiomas.

Infantile hemangiomas occur in 3 to 10% of infants. To predict the clinical course and counsel on treatment, it is crucial to accurately det … timate depth or to confirm difficult assessments. This paper presents an alternative diagnosis tool-thermography-as a useful, immediate means of carrying out accurate hemangioma examinations. We conducted a study analyzing infantile hemangiomas with a custom thermographic system. In the first phase of the study, 55 hemangiomas of previously diagnosed patients …

Application of thermography in the diagnostic investigation of thyroid nodules.

Thyroid nodules (TN) are common in the general population, and the clinical importance of diagnosing thyroid nodules is based on excluding the possibility of thyroid cancer, which occurs in 7-15% of cases. The thyroid gland, owing to its superficial location, is easily accessible via thermography, a noninvasive method of recording body temperature that measures infrared radiation emitted by the body surface. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the temperature differences between benign and malignant TN by using thermography. We conducted a cross-sectional study where 147 TN were divided in…

Infrared thermography and capillaroscopy in the diagnosis of Raynaud's phenomenon.

AIMS: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a relatively common disease. There are two distinct forms of RP - primary (PRP), where no other associated diseases are present, and secondary (SRP), where RP is associated with other diseases. It can be challenging to differentiate between RP and other diseases through medical history alone, due to the episodic nature of RP. Objective analysis of anamnestic data was performed in our study using infrared thermography (IRT) and a cold pressor test (CPT). Capillaroscopy was performed to assess morphological changes in the acral circulation. METHODS: Patients w…

Using Thermography in the Diagnostics of Lymphedema: Pilot Study.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of thermography in the diagnosis of lymphedema. Methods: The study included 43 women after axillary dissection caused by breast cancer, whose mean age was 64.4 ± 7.8 years. The subjects were divided into two groups, with the criterion for division being the appearance of secondary lymphedema. The size of lymphedema was verified by Limb Volumes Professional 5.0; body surface temperatures were registered using a thermal camera. Results: In the control group, the difference in the volume of the limb on the operated side and the contrala…

Validation of thermography in the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the validity of several thermogram-derived indices of autonomic functioning in the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dy … actual temperature values did not discriminate between RSD and non-RSD pain patients. CONCLUSIONS: Thermography can be a useful component of RSD diagnosis. In situations where sensitivity and specificity are equally important, an asymmetry cutoff of 0.6 degree C appears optimal. If specificity (i.e., accurately ruling out non-RSD cases) is more important, a c …

Thermography in the detection and follow up of chondromalacia patellae.

Although diagnostic criteria for chondromalacia patellae exist, the disease is often accompanied by physical signs which are limited or non-diagnostic. Thermographic examination was performed in 157 patients with clinical diagnosis of chondromalacia patellae in 86 patients after surgical treatment for chondromalacia, and in 308 controls. Thermography can help the clinicians in establishing the diagnosis of chondromalacia patellae, but by itself is not sufficiently specific. The specificity of thermography was dependent on age, ranging from 90% for the 15-24 year age group to 65% for the 45-54 …

[Thermography in the diagnosis of vascular neuritis of the optic nerve].

A new method for diagnosing vascular neuritis of optic nerve by means of thermography is proposed. Among 47 patients with diagnosis of optic nerve neuritis of unclear etiology, in 37 of them vascular genesis of the disease was diagnosed. The thermograms have shown appearance of dark "cold" spots and a fall of temperature by 1.0 degrees C and lower in the supraorbital and orbital areas of the affected eye. The method is highly precise (90.27%, sensitive (94.9%) and doesn't require long time.

Use of thermography in the differential diagnosis of phylloides tumour.

Thermography can be used as a method of diagnosing breast masses. We report our results of its use in the differential diagnosis of fibroadenoma from phylloides tumours (n = 47 and 20 respectively). Thermographic resolution (Th) and the difference in temperature between the tumour and a similar zone in the contralateral breast (delta 2) were compared. Thermograms were class Th1 (with a similar thermal pattern in both breasts without hypervascularization or hot points) and Th2 (with hypervascularization or a hot area with a thermal difference with the same area in the opposite breast (delta 2) …

[The possibilities of infrared thermography in the diagnosis of thyroid pathology].

The paper is concerned with the results of a retrospective analysis of the diagnostic value of infrared thermography of the thyroid by comparing clinical, histological (75.8% of observed cases) and thermographic diagnoses. Altogether 300 persons were examined, of them 30 were healthy subjects. The clinical diagnosis was based on the results of RIA, radio-isotope, immunological and preoperative cytological methods of investigation. The thermographic criteria of euthyroidism, hypo- and hyperthyroidism permitted accurate characterization of thyroid function in all the examinees, the diagnosis of …

Evaluation of thermography in the diagnosis of selected entrapment neuropathies.

We studied 20 normal subjects, 22 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, and 15 with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow to compare the diagnostic accuracy of infrared thermography with that of conventional electrodiagnostic studies. We found abnormal thermograms in 55% of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and 47% with ulnar neuropathy, using 2.5 SD from the normal mean as criteria for abnormality. The abnormalities consisted of either an increase in interside temperature difference in the fingers and hands or an alteration of the normal thenar-hypothenar temperature gradient in the fingers. The s…

The use of infrared thermography in the evaluation of oral lesions.

This study was conducted to quantitate the degree of inflammation associated with oral lesions by using infrared thermography. It was reasoned that the increased vascularity associated with inflamed tissue may result in measurable increases in surface temperature. One subject with normal oral mucosa and three subjects with oral lesions of varying causes were studied with a thermal video system, using an infrared imager and microprocessor. A clinical photograph of each subject was obtained. Multiple thermograms were made in a temperature range of 30.0 C to 34.2 C at a sensitivity of 0.2 C. Phot…
