'Thermal taste' predicts higher responsiveness to chemical taste and flavor.

Individual differences in taste perception have been explained in part by variations in peripheral innervation associated with the genetic ability to taste the bitter substances PTC and PROP. In the present study we report evidence of another source of individual differences that is independent of taste stimulus, taste quality, or gustatory nerve. Individuals who perceived taste from thermal stimulation alone (thermal taste) gave significantly higher taste ratings to chemical stimuli--often by a factor of >2:1--than did individuals who perceived no taste from thermal stimulation. This was true

Noise annoyance with regard to neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and personality variables.

To evaluate the relation between annoyance to environmental noise, general neurophysiological sensitivity, subjective noise sensitivity and other individual characteristics, experiments were undertaken in which 93 subjects assessed their subjective annoyance after exposure to noise under laboratory conditions. Evaluations were made of the discomfort threshold for pulsating sound, the light discomfort, and heat and cold discomfort. The heart rate and discomfort after exposure to a series of impulse noises was also determined. Subjective noise sensitivity, attitudes to noise, mood and personalit

Acute Whole-Body Heat Exposure Modulates EEG Microstate Dynamics, Phase-Lagged Connectivity, and Cortical Source Activity.

Acute exposure to elevated ambient temperature affects physiological regulation, thermal perception, and cognitive functioning, yet its influence on the spatiotemporal organization of human brain activity remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated temperature-related changes in EEG spectral power, microstates, functional connectivity, and cortical source activity. Fifteen healthy male participants completed three randomized 45-min seated exposures at ambient temperatures of 21, 30, and 38 °C while wearing standardized winter protective clothing (3.2 clo). EEG, skin temperature,

Cold-Sensing TRP Channels and Temperature Preference Modulate Ovarian Development in the Model Organism Drosophila melanogaster.

Temperature is perceived primarily via transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, which are integral to the molecular machinery sensing environmental and cellular signals. Functional evidence of TRP channels' involvement in regulating cold-induced developmental/reproductive responses remains scarce. Here, we show that mutations affecting cold-sensing TRP channels antagonize the reduction in ovarian development induced by low temperatures (reproductive dormancy) in Drosophila melanogaster. More specifically, mutants for brv1, trp, and trpl significantly lowered dormancy levels at 12 °C and ex

Effects of low-intensity exercise on local skin and whole-body thermal sensation in hypothermic young males.

Thermal sensation, a key component of behavioral thermoregulation, is modulated by the changes in both skin and core temperatures. Although cutaneous thermal sensation to local cold is blunted during exercise as compared to rest in normothermic humans, it remains to be determined whether this holds true during core cooling. Furthermore, when local skin thermal sensation is diminished during exercise, it remains unclear whether whole-body thermal sensation is also attenuated. We therefore tested whether low-intensity exercise (VO2: ~1300 ml min-1) attenuates local skin and/or whole-body thermal

Thermoregulation: physiological and clinical considerations during sedation and general anesthesia.

Mild hypothermia is common during deep sedation or general anesthesia and is frequently associated with patient discomfort and shivering. Greater declines in temperature can produce an even greater number of significant detrimental effects. This article reviews principles of thermoregulation and influences of anesthetic agents. An understanding of these will provide a foundation for strategies to reduce heat loss and better manage patient discomfort when it occurs.

Report of altered sensation in patients with cleft lip.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with cleft lip have normal perioral sensation. DESIGN: Each subject was carefully questioned about the following: sensation in the face at rest, light touch of different areas, and sensation in natural situations (e.g., exposure to cold weather) that reveal sensory abnormalities. A cotton-tip applicator stick was stroked lightly across the facial skin. The subject's descriptions of the evoked sensations were used to identify and outline areas with abnormal sensation. SETTING: Data were obtained from subjects participating in a longitudinal, university

Sampling and evaluation of specific absorption rates during patient examinations performed on 1.5-Tesla MR systems.

It was the purpose of present study, to evaluate a large number of exposure-time courses measured during patient examinations in clinical routine in relation to the current IEC standard and the draft version of the revised standard and, moreover, to investigate whether there is a correlation between the subjective heat perception of the patients during the MR examination and the intensity of RF power deposition. To this end, radiofrequency exposure to 591 patients undergoing MR examinations performed on 1.5-Tesla MR systems was monitored in five clinics and evaluated in accordance with both IE

Thermal grill illusion and complex regional pain syndrome type I (reflex sympathetic dystrophy).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In normal humans, placing a hand on a thermal grill containing warm elements separated by cool ones produces a burning sensation. In this case report, responses to a thermal grill in a patient with neuropathic pain were examined. METHODS: The responses of a 31-year-old woman with complex regional pain syndrome type I (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) to a thermal grill were evaluated before and after stellate ganglion block. RESULTS: The patient experienced a burning sensation when the unaffected hand was placed on the grill and could distinguish which element was war

Terpenes and terpenoids modulating TRPV channels in diabetes: role in fibrosis and inflammatory signaling.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channels are non-selective cation channels that mediate thermosensation, nociception, osmotic balance, and metabolic regulation. In diabetes, altered TRPV channel expression and decreased calcium influx key pathways modulates, include NF-κB, AMPK, and TGF-β, promoting extracellular matrix accumulation and fibrotic remodelling. The limited availability of pathway specific interventions highlights TRPV channels as potential therapeutic target in diabetes. Recently, natural phytoconstituents have shown to exhibit TRPV channel modulating properties. St

Mixed pre-cooling improves thermal strain but not running performance in female endurance athletes exercising in the heat across the menstrual cycle.

This study investigated the effect of mixed pre-cooling (cooling vest and ice-slurry) on thermal and cardiovascular strain and performance in unacclimatized females exercising in the heat during menstrual cycle (MC) Phase-1 (low estrogen and progesterone) and Phase-4 (moderate estrogen and high progesterone). In a randomized crossover design, 11 runners completed two trials in each MC Phase: mixed pre-cooling (wearing a cooling vest around the torso for 30 min and ingesting 7.5 g.kg-1 of body mass of ice slurry), and control (equivalent slurry volume at ~20°C without a cooling vest), prior to

Identifying Discomplete Spinal Lesions: New Evidence from Pain-Autonomic Interaction in Spinal Cord Injury.

The clinical evaluation of spinal afferents is an important diagnostic and prognostic marker for neurological and functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). Particularly important regarding neuropathic pain following SCI is the function of the spinothalamic tract (STT) conveying nociceptive and temperature information. Here, we investigated the added value of neurophysiological methods revealing discomplete STT lesions; that is, residual axonal sparing in clinically complete STT lesions. Specifically, clinical pinprick testing and thermal thresholds were compared with objective contac

Modest enhancement of sensory axon regeneration in the sciatic nerve with conditional co-deletion of PTEN and SOCS3 in the dorsal root ganglia of adult mice.

Axons within the peripheral nervous system are capable of regeneration, but full functional recovery is rare. Recent work has shown that conditional deletion of two key signaling inhibitors of the PI3K and Jak/Stat pathways-phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS3), respectively-promotes regeneration of normally non-regenerative central nervous system axons. Moreover, in studies of optic nerve regeneration, co-deletion of both PTEN and SOCS3 has an even greater effect. Here, we test the hypotheses (1) that PTEN deletion enhances axon regeneration foll

Designing for mild winters: evidence-based thermal comfort benchmarks from urban parks in a sub-tropical city.

Outdoor thermal comfort in the cool season remains under-specified for humid subtropical cities. We conducted a winter field study across four urban parks in Hong Kong, collecting 611 paired questionnaire-microclimate records (December-March). On-site measurements (air temperature, globe temperature, humidity, wind) were linked at 60-s resolution to Cantonese surveys of thermal sensation. Neutral temperature was estimated with ordinary least squares and confirmed with proportional-odds models; 2,000-fold bootstrap confidence intervals and 0.5 °C binned regressions quantified uncertainty and se

Molecular basis for cold and menthol sensing by mammalian TRPM8.

The transient receptor potential melastatin member 8 (TRPM8) is a polymodal ion channel that senses cold and menthol in mammals. Despite prior structural studies, the mechanisms by which cold and menthol activate TRPM8 remain unresolved. Here, we present cryo-EM structures and extensive functional analyses to reveal cold- and menthol-dependent activation mechanisms. We observe that cold-sensing residues are widespread and that snapshots of cooling-dependent opening reveal dramatic pore rearrangement which suggest a mechanism for cold sensing. Menthol binds dynamically to drive channel activati

The influence of shading facilities on outdoor thermal comfort, pedestrian walking speed, and indoor satisfaction.

As urban development increases, the use of air conditioning, industrial activities, and transportation makes human heat a major contributor to the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI). Common strategies to mitigate UHI include expanding water areas and green spaces, designing effective ventilation systems, and promoting energy-efficient buildings. In addition, shade structures have become a widely used thermal adaptation measure in outdoor environments. In this study, we investigated the walking speed and thermal comfort of pedestrians during the transition from outdoor to air-conditioned indoor spa

The effect of nitrile gloves on temperature perception during hot water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Scalds account for 40 % of burn injuries in developed countries, with a subset occurring during caregiving activities, particularly when gloves are worn. Gloves, a standard precaution against infection and body fluid exposure, may impair sensory feedback critical for detecting temperature changes, potentially increasing the risk of burns during personal care tasks. METHODS: This study investigated the impact of glove use on heat perception. Twelve healthy participants (6 male, 6 female) immersed their index fingers in water baths set at 40°C, 45°C, 50°C, 55°C, and 60°C. Heat per
