A Rare Case of Urachal Carcinoma Metastatic to Thoracic Vertebra Detected by FDG PET/CT.

Both chest radiography and MRI scan showed compression fracture of the T6 vertebral body in a 33-year-old man who presented with back pain. Because of the absence of predisposing factors for compression fracture, a pathologic fracture was considered. For this reason, an FDG PET/CT was performed. The images revealed not only the abnormal activity in the known T6 vertebral body but also an additional activity immediately anterosuperior to the urinary bladder in a partially calcified soft tissue nodule. A mucinous adenocarcinoma of urachus with solitary bone metastasis was confirmed histopatholog

[Sequelae of injuries of thoracic vertebrae with spinal cord trauma in persons under the influence of alcohol].

An analysis of 416 patients treated at the Department of Rehabilitation for the trauma to thoracic spine is presented. Analysed group included 178 patients who underwent trauma being drunk. Sequelae of the trauma, the results of neurological and functional treatment were compared in two groups of patients: admitted to the hospital under the influence of alcohol and sober. An analysis of the data indicates lower degree of the trauma to the spinal cord and markedly better neurological and functional results of therapy in patients being sober during the accident. Mortality rate is also lower in t

Postoperative Paraplegia in Patient with Thoracic Ossification of Ligamentum Flavum and Thoracolumbar Kyphosis Derived from Wedged Vertebrae.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is a common cause of thoracic myeloradiculopathy. Thoracolumbar kyphosis derived from abnormal embryonic development of the spine vertebrae often progresses continuously and causes neurologic deterioration. These conditions are presented separately in most cases. A diagnosis of both OLF and thoracolumbar kyphosis in the same patient is rare, and no definite principle of surgical strategy for this case could be found in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we report a 36-year-old woman who suffered from weakness and numbness of

Delayed hemorrhagic shock due to reverse chance thoracic vertebrae fracture complicated with hypoxemia caused by diaphragmatic eventration.

Deceleration injuries sometimes cause thoracolumbar spine burst fractures. These injuries can also occur in people with kyphosis, which is common in elderly societies. The type of fracture and initial treatment require greater consideration in elderly than in non-elderly cases. An 82-year-old woman with kyphosis was involved in a traffic accident and was admitted to our hospital with severe back pain, to treat reverse chance thoracic vertebrae burst fracture. The initial treatment involving rest in the spine position was unsuccessful. Continuous hemorrhage resulted in shock. She also developed…

An overview of the performance of AI in fracture detection in lumbar and thoracic spine radiographs on a per vertebra basis.

PURPOSE: Subtle spinal compression fractures can easily be missed. AI may help in interpreting these images. We propose to test the performance of an FDA-approved algorithm for fracture detection in radiographs on a per vertebra basis, assessing performance based on grade of compression, presence of foreign material, severity of degenerative changes, and acuity of the fracture. METHODS: Thoracic and lumbar spine radiographs with inquiries for fracture were retrospectively collected and analyzed by the AI. The presence or absence of fracture was defined by the written report or cross-sectional

The association between variations in the number of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and rib morphology in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Preoperative counting of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae is crucial in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) due to reported anatomical variations and potential surgical site misidentification. This study investigated characteristics associated with the vertebral number variations AIS, particularly focusing on rib morphology. METHODS: Based on three-dimensional computed tomography, patients were categorized into the non-variant number group, comprising individuals with 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae, and the variant number group, comprising individuals with different numbers of ver

Low Anterior Cervical Approach Without Sternotomy or Clavicle Resection for Upper Thoracic Vertebra Corpectomy.

The spine is the third most common site for metastatic disease following the lung and the liver. Approximately 60-70% of patients with metas … sternotomy can be performed. We present a case of a 52-year-old female with metastases to the upper thoracic vertebrae who underwent successful T2 corpectomy and T1-3 anterior fusion via a low anterior cervical approach, without sternotomy or clavicle resection.

Spinal cord injury in an adult patient with thoracic butterfly vertebra: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Butterfly vertebrae are a rare congenital vertebral anomaly. An overlap of this spinal anomaly with other diseases has been reported. However, to the authors' knowledge, the coexistence of butterfly vertebrae and spinal cord injury has not been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male was admitted to our emergency department after a motor vehicle accident. His complaint was back pain, and he was unable to move both lower limbs. Upon physical examination, the patient was not ambulatory. Sensory examination revealed the absence of sensation below the T12 lev

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Caused by Bilateral Cervical Ribs of the Eighth Cervical Vertebra: A Case Report.

CASE: We experienced a rare case of thoracic outlet syndrome caused by bilateral cervical ribs (CR) arising from the 8th cervical vertebra and resected using a supraclavicular approach. Eight months after the left surgery, the remnant of the CR, which could not be removed, was enlarged and compressed the neurovascular bundle again. Reoperation was performed using a transaxillary endoscopic approach. The patient had no symptoms or recurrence 5 years after the final surgery. CONCLUSION: The 8th cervical vertebra is rarely encountered. The transaxillary endoscopic approach was helpful for resect

Sclerosing Epithelioid Fibrosarcoma of the Thoracic Vertebrae: An Fairly Unusual Case Report With a Short Review of Literature.

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is a rare subtype of soft tissue tumors, and SEF originating from the side of the spine is even rarer. We report that a 28-year-old young woman suffered from chest pain and back pain for 3 years, and thereafter she went to see a doctor because her condition deteriorated. Enhanced CT showed that the right posterior upper chest wall mass invaded the adjacent bone, and the boundary between the lesion and the surrounding tissues was relatively clear. She then underwent posterior tumor removal surgery. The pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of

Solitary plasmacytoma of the thoracic vertebra presenting with sudden paraplegia and back pain: a pathologic case report.

Solitary plasmacytoma (SPC) accounts for 5% of plasma cell neoplasm. SPC of the spine is relatively rare, and SPC presenting with sudden paraplegia is very rare. A 53 year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of sudden severe paraplegia and back pain. Emergency MRI revealed a tumor of the thoracic vertebra no. 10 (Th10). Pressure fracture of the Th10 was also recognized. The tumor was not osteolytic and invasion was recognized around the Th10. The tumor directly compressed the spinal cord. An excision of the tumor was performed under the clinical diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma

Intraosseous schwannoma of D12 thoracic vertebra: diagnosis and surgical management with 5-year follow-up.

Intraosseous schwannomas or neurilemomas are rare benign neoplasms that account for less than 0.2% of primary bone tumours. Very rarely they have been observed in lumbar vertebrae. We report a neurilemoma involving the lower thoracic spine and present the clinical, radiological and histological findings with surgical management and 5-year follow-up. An 18-year-old-male presented with back pain and deteriorating locomotor function. Neurological examination revealed wasting of both calves and weakness in plantar flexion and dorsiflexion bilaterally. X-rays showed a D12 vertebral body abnormality
