Ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid (Timentin) has a broad-spectrum activity that includes gram-positive aerobes, and facultative and obligate anaerobes. Numerous studies have demonstrated that single agents, including this combination, are as efficacious as clindamycin plus an aminoglycoside in treating gynecologic soft tissue infections. Its spectrum of activity, together with its potential for treating Chlamydia trachomatis, makes it suitable for the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease.

Timentin (ticarcillin plus clavulanic acid) plus amikacin was administered as an empirical regimen to 52 febrile granulocytopenic patients with cancer and appeared as effective as the other commonly recommended combinations of antimicrobial agents. A favourable response was observed in 61% of episodes with bacteraemia and in 83% of the episodes without bacteraemia. However, the efficacy in Gram-positive bacteraemia was suboptimal and the emergence of superinfections caused by Gram-positive cocci may represent a clinical challenge.

Cefsulodin was the most active of the cephalosporins and exhibited 4-16 times more activity than carbenicillin or ticarcillin against 50 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Azlocillin and piperacillin showed good activity, while tobramycin was the most effective aminoglycoside. The activity of cefsulodin was unaltered by increases in inocula, but resistance was induced easily. When combined with gentamicin, no synergistic or antagonistic activity was observed against multiply resistant isolates.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of 181 (107 ail-harboring isolates and 74 non-ail-harboring) Yersinia enterocolitica isolates obtained from the oral cavity of swine was determined against 24 antimicrobial agents. All Y. enterocolitica isolates were susceptible to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, enrofloxacin, aminoglycosides, and nitrofurantoin. Susceptibility to tetracycline appeared to vary by lot of origin. Isolates were resistant to sulfonamides (other than sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim), penicillin, ampicillin, ticarcillin, cephalothin, macrolides, and tiamulin.

The new in vitro activity of temocillin (BRL 17421), a new beta-lactamase-stable penicillin, was compared with those of other beta-lactam antibiotics for over 500 clinical bacterial isolates. Temocillin inhibited 94% of the Enterobacteriaceae organisms at concentrations of 0.5 to 8 microgram/ml, regardless of organisms resistance to ampicillin, ticarcillin, cefazolin, or combinations thereof. Most pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and all staphylococci and streptococci tested were resistant to temocillin.

We report a case of sepsis caused by Bifidobacterium longum in a 19-year-old male who had developed high fever, jaundice, and hepatomegaly after acupuncture therapy with small gold needles. Anaerobic, non-spore-forming, gram-positive bacilli were isolated from his blood and finally identified as B. longum. He recovered completely after treatment with ticarcillin and metronidazole. To our knowledge, this is the first report of incidental sepsis caused by B. longum.

The kinetics and stoichiometry of S-oxidation of semisynthetic penicillins (amoxicillin trihydrate, ampicillin trihydrate, sodium salt of oxacillin and ticarcillin disodium salt) by potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate in aqueous solutions at pH 3-6 was studied by iodometric titration: 1 mol of KNSO5 per 1 mol of penicillin, the quantitative interaction is achieved in 1 min (time of observation). A unified method was developed and the possibility of quantification of penicillins by the iodometric method using potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate as an analytical reagent was shown.
