Systemic inflammatory responses in African tick-bite fever.

Information regarding the inflammatory response in African tick-bite fever (ATBF), an emerging spotted-fever-group rickettsiosis, in international travelers to sub-Saharan Africa, is scarce. Plasma/serum levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF), soluble (s) E-selectin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, interferon-gamma, IL-10, IL-13, IL-8, RANTES, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha, and C-reactive protein were studied, at both first presentation and follow-up, in 15 patients with travel-associated ATBF and in 14 healthy travelers who served as control subjects. Our main and nov

[A case of arthritis caused by a tick bite (Lyme arthritis)].

A typical case of arthritis in the knee joint of a 49-year-old man caused by tick bite is reported. Based on this case report the manifestations of arthritis after erythema chronicum migrans so far published in literature are described.

The pajaroello tick bite. The frightening folklore and the mild disease.

The pajaroella tick (Ornithodoros coriaceus) has a fairly wide distribution in the coastal and mountainous areas of California and Mexico. Persons engaged in outdoor activities there, are frequently bitten. Little is written in the medical literature concerning the tick and its bite. What has been written is liberally injected with frightening folklore that sometimes results in overzealous treatment. Conservative and supportive therapy is advisable and only rarely should one have to resort to such treatment as excision of an area of tissue necrosis to prevent ulceration and prolongation of hea

Assessment of Duration of Tick Feeding by the Scutal Index Reduces Need for Antibiotic Prophylaxis After Ixodes scapularis Tick Bites.

Doxycycline is recommended for persons with Ixodes scapularis tick bites in certain geographic areas, if the tick had fed for at least 36 hours. Based on the scutal index, over 40% of I. scapularis tick bites from patients seen at the Lyme Disease Diagnostic Center did not warrant antibiotic prophylaxis.

Barriers to entry: A participatory science study of tick identification, monitoring, and physical barriers to reduce tick bites on horses.

Equine tick-borne diseases pose increasing challenges due to climate change and expanding tick geographical ranges. With no vaccines available for Lyme disease or equine anaplasmosis in horses, tick bite prevention remains the primary control method. This two-year study evaluated tick species composition on horses in Pennsylvania and assessed the effectiveness of physical barriers for tick prevention through community-based participatory research. The study engaged horse owners as research partners. Year 1 (2022) established baseline tick surveillance across 45 participants with 60 horses, con

Alpha-Gal Sensitization Dynamics in Individuals After Tick Bites With or Without Erythema Migrans.

α-Gal syndrome (AGS) is an emerging tick-borne disease characterised by the development of specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) antibodies against galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal), a carbohydrate found in most mammalian species, but not in humans. AGS occurs in individuals with a history of tick bites. Currently, no data exist on α-gal sIgE seroprevalence in the Dutch population, including those with tick bites or erythema migrans (EM). Therefore, this study aimed to determine the rate of α-gal sIgE seroprevalence in the Dutch population, to assess α-gal sIgE seroconversion after tick bites, and …

Clinical features of double infection with tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis transmitted by tick bite.

BACKGROUND: In Latvia and other endemic regions, a single tick bite has the potential to transmit both tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis. OBJECTIVE: To analyse both the clinical features and differential diagnosis of combined tick-borne infection with TBE and Lyme borreliosis, in 51 patients with serological evidence, of whom 69% had tick bites. RESULTS: Biphasic fever suggestive of TBE occurred in 55% of the patients. Meningitis occurred in 92%, with painful radicular symptoms in 39%. Muscle weakness occurred in 41%; in 29% the flaccid paralysis was compatible with TBE. Onl…

Type-I cryoglobulinemia-like histopathologic changes in tick bites: a useful clue for tissue diagnosis in the absence of tick parts.

BACKGROUND: The histopathologic findings of localized reactions to tick bites may present as diagnostic dilemmas, especially if there is no history of a tick bite, or if the tick's mouthparts are not present in the biopsied skin. OBJECTIVE: Skin biopsies of patients with a clinical history of a tick bite were selected and reviewed with the aim of detecting a common histopathologic denominator which could serve as a useful clue to the diagnosis, especially when the tick's mouthparts are absent. METHODS: Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of 15 skin biopsies of tick bites were retrieved from…

Circulating microRNA profiles associated with tick bite and debilitating symptom complexes attributed to ticks (DSCATT).

Tick bites in Australia are associated with a poorly understood syndrome known as Debilitating Symptom Complexes Attributed to Ticks (DSCATT), however, the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigate host responses to tick bite and DSCATT by profiling circulating host-encoded microRNAs (miRNAs), key regulators of gene expression. Circulating miRNAs were profiled in two cohorts: a longitudinal cohort followed from tick bite for up to 12 months, and a retrospective cohort with DSCATT. Differential expression analysis revealed that tick bite induces widespread changes in…

Bite by bite: Exposing hidden tick-borne disease risks among Nigeria's ruminant livestock workers.

Tick-borne diseases pose a significant global threat, with individuals in livestock-related occupations at high risk. This study assessed th … a high prevalence of risky practices and significant knowledge gaps. Among herdsmen, 79.2% reported tick bites, 80.8% crushed ticks barehanded, and 82.4% found ticks in their bedrooms. For abattoir workers, 69.9% had tick exposure, 89.6% did not use gloves, and 88% sustained work injuries, with most continuing to work untreated. Critically, 50.2% of abattoir …

Tick Bite Alopecia: A Report of Five Cases and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Although well-known, tick bite alopecia is rarely reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We present five cases of alopecia of the scalp caused by tick bites. All patients were Caucasians, 2 males and 3 females, with an age ranging from 4 to 9 years (mean age: 6.3 years). DISCUSSION: The mechanisms by which ticks cause alopecia are unknown. The saliva of ticks contains anticoagulants (heparins, heparinoids, and coumarins). The release of these anticoagulants would induce an inflammatory reaction on the scalp, with alopecia as the final clinical result.

Powassan Virus Encephalitis after Tick Bite, Manitoba, Canada.

A case of Powassan encephalitis occurred in Manitoba, Canada, after the bite of a black-legged tick. Awareness of this emerging tickborne illness is needed because the number of vector tick species is growing. No specific treatment options exist, and cases with illness and death are high. Prevention is crucial.
