Evaluating Surgical Safety and Quality Assurance by Conducting an Audit of WHO Checklist Implementation in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Surgical care is an integral part of healthcare aimed at preventing surgical complications. To ensure safety during surgical procedures, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced a surgical safety checklist (SSC). This checklist has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of complications and adverse outcomes caused by poor practices or negligence during surgeries.  Methodology: Following ethical approval, an audit was conducted on 200 major surgeries performed at Fatima Memorial Hospital in Lahore. The WHO SSC was converted into a "Yes/No" questionnaire using Google Forms

Simulation-Based Summative Assessment of Neonatal Resuscitation Providers Using the RETAIN Serious Board Game-A Pilot Study.

Background: Each year, 13-26 million newborn babies require help to breathe at birth. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) who provide neonatal resuscitative care must be frequently evaluated to maintain and improve the quality of healthcare delivered. While simulation-based competence assessment is preferred, resource constraints hinder uptake. We aimed to examine if the RETAIN simulation-based boardgame can be used to assess HCPs' neonatal resuscitation knowledge. Method: Twenty neonatal HCPs (19 females) from the Royal Alexandra Hospital (Edmonton, Canada) were recruited. First, they completed a

Commonization of HIV/AIDS services in Nigeria: the need, the processes and the prospects.

INTRODUCTION: With the first case of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) identified in 1986, the management of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria has evolved through the years. The emergency phase of the HIV/AIDS program, aimed at containing the HIV/AIDS epidemic within a short time frame, was carried out by international agencies that built structures separate from hospitals' programs. It is imperative that Nigeria shifts from the previous paradigm to the concept of Commonization of HIV to achieve sustainability. Commonization ensures that HIV/AIDS is seen as

Ocular Syphilis in an HIV-Positive Transgender Female: A Case Report.

This is a case of a 56-year-old transgender female with a history of HIV who presented to the emergency department with visual disturbances and bilateral papilledema. Initially, intracranial abnormalities were ruled out through imaging studies. However, a lumbar puncture later confirmed the presence of syphilis in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), and the patient was diagnosed with bilateral syphilitic uveitis by a retina specialist. Treatment with intravenous and intramuscular penicillin led to significant improvement in her visual symptoms and resolution of optic nerve edema. This case unders

Measurement of unnecessary psychiatric readmissions: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Care transition for patients being discharged from inpatient mental healthcare to outpatient settings is a growing focus for healthcare delivery systems. Many studies of this inpatient to outpatient transition use the rate of postdischarge readmissions as a patient-level outcome measure to assess the quality of transition. However, it is unclear how studies define the measure, and whether there is a shared understanding by the field regarding which definition is appropriate for which circumstances. This scoping review thus aims to examine how published studies have approached mea

Integrated point-of-care testing (POCT) for HIV, syphilis, malaria and anaemia at antenatal facilities in western Kenya: a qualitative study exploring end-users' perspectives of appropriateness, acceptability and feasibility.

BACKGROUND: HIV, syphilis, malaria and anaemia are leading preventable causes of adverse pregnancy outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa yet testing coverage for conditions other than HIV is low. Availing point-of-care tests (POCTs) at rural antenatal health facilities (dispensaries) has the potential to improve access and timely treatment. Fundamental to the adoption of and adherence to new diagnostic approaches are healthcare workers' and pregnant women's (end-users) buy-in. A qualitative approach was used to capture end-users' experiences of using POCTs for HIV, syphilis, malaria and anaemia to as

The feasibility and acceptability of implementing video reflexive ethnography (VRE) as an improvement tool in acute maternity services.

BACKGROUND: Video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) has been argued to be an alternative approach to collaborative learning in healthcare teams, more able to capture the complexities of the healthcare environment than simulation. This study aims to explore the feasibility and acceptability of employing VRE as an improvement tool in acute maternity services. METHOD: Focused ethnography and semi-structured interviews (n = 17) explored the feasibility of employing VRE from the perspective of the researcher-facilitator, and that of the healthcare staff participants. Reflexive thematic analysis was used

Budget Impact of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Discontinuation in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia With Sustained Deep Molecular Response.

OBJECTIVES: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) account for the vast majority of healthcare expenditure on patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), and it has been demonstrated that TKI discontinuation in patients in long-term deep molecular remission (DMR) is safe and improves quality of life. Our objective was to estimate the budget impact of TKI discontinuation in CML patients in long-term DMR from the perspective of the French healthcare system. METHODS: This analysis was conducted over a 5-year time horizon using a Markov model with cycles of 6 months. Transition probabilities were es

Impact of Host Immune Status on Discordant Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Circulating B Cell Frequencies and Antibody Levels.

Individuals with pre-existing chronic systemic low-grade inflammation are prone to develop severe COVID-19 and stronger anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses. Whether this phenomenon reflects a differential expansion of antiviral B cells or a failure to regulate antibody synthesis remains unknown. Here, we compared the antiviral B cell repertoire of convalescent healthcare personnel to that of hospitalized patients with pre-existing comorbidities. Out of 277,500 immortalized B cell clones, antiviral B cell frequencies were determined by indirect immunofluorescence screening on SARS-CoV-2 infected

Role of operating room air pressure variability on development of surgical-site infections in surgical procedures classified as colon and abdominal hysterectomy by the National Healthcare Safety Network: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between colon and hysterectomy surgical-site infections (SSIs) and air pressure variability inside operating rooms (ORs) during procedures is understudied. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study featured patients who underwent procedures assigned National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) colon or abdominal hysterectomy codes. The primary exposure was percentage of procedure time out of pressure range. NHSN criteria were used to identify SSIs. We used multi-variable binary logistic regression modelling to analyse the association between the exposure and SSIs. Sens

Childhood obesity and comorbidities-related perspective and experience of parents from Black and Asian minority ethnicities in England: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Preventing childhood obesity and associated comorbidities is often hampered by disproportionate disparity in healthcare provision in minority ethnic populations. This study contextualized factors influencing childhood obesity and related comorbidity from the perspectives and experiences of parents of ethnic minority populations. METHODS: Following ethical approval, families (n = 180) from ethnic minority populations in the Northeast of England were contacted through flyers, community social groups and online forum. Of the 180 families contacted, 22 expressed interests, of whom 12
