[Pseudolymphomatous aspects of mesenteric lymphadenopathies in Whipple's disease. Value of x-ray computed tomography monitoring].

Lymphadenopathy is a very common finding during the course of Whipple's disease (W.D.). Abdominal (mesenteric and retroperitoneal) tumoral lymphnodes may mimick malignant neoplasm, specially a lymphoma. The authors report the case of a patient who had an abdominal computer-assisted tomography (C.T.) at the diagnosis and during an eleven month survey for W.D. General C.T. findings can help to differenciate mesenteric lymphadenopathy in W.D. from those found in malignant lymphomas: low density (10-20 Hounsfield Units) because of the high fatty charge of Whipple's lymphnodes, lymphadenopathy in t

Evaluation of x-ray CT (EMI scan) and isotope brain studies, including radioisotope axial tomography.

A comparison is made of the results of computer-assisted X-ray tomography (EMI scan) and those of radionuclide brain scan supplemented by computer-assisted isotope tomography. The X-ray examination shows a wider range of positive diagnosis, but the radionuclide examination is complementary in the detection of supratentorial gliomas. A similar comparative value of the isotope tomogram is noted in the detection of cerebral infarcts.

In Vitro Validation of an Artefact Suppression Algorithm in X-Ray Phase-Contrast Computed Tomography.

X-ray phase-contrast tomography can significantly increase the contrast-resolution of conventional attenuation-contrast imaging, especially for soft-tissue structures that have very similar attenuation. Just as in attenuation-based tomography, phase contrast tomography requires a linear dependence of aggregate beam direction on the incremental direction alteration caused by individual voxels along the path of the X-ray beam. Dense objects such as calcifications in biological specimens violate this condition. There are extensive beam deflection artefacts in the vicinity of such structures becau

[Variants of the anatomical structure of frontal sinuses based on the results of X-ray computed tomography].

The objective of the present work was to analyse computed tomograms of brain and paranasal sinuses obtained from 3,054 patients with a view to elucidating specific features of the latter's structure. The following structural variants were distinguished: agenesia, hypogenesia, and hypergenesia. Orbital, zygomatic, temporal, cock's comb, ethmoidal, and nasal recesses in the frontal sinuses were described. It is concluded that the marked structural variability of frontal sinuses is responsible for the great variety of clinical manifestations of frontitis.

Micro X-ray computed tomography analysis for the evaluation of asymmetrical condylar growth in the rat.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of forced lateral bite on mandibular growth, micro X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used for the purpose evaluating condylar cartilage and cancellous bone formation in 10 male Wister rats (3 weeks of age). SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The rats were divided into two groups--experimental and control. In experimental group, an inclined crown was cemented onto the maxillary incisors to produce 2.5 mm shift toward the left side during mastication. Right-left differences in whole mandibular length, mandibular height, condylar size, trabecular structure o

[Deafness caused by malformation of the inner ear. Current contribution of x-ray computed tomography].

Hearing loss due to malformations of the auditory system may involve morphologic abnormalities of the external canal, the middle ear, or the inner ear. Various combined malformations are possible. Audiologic assessment and computed tomography make it possible to perform a precise diagnostic evaluation of inner ear malformations. In a series of 71 children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss, 31 had computed tomographic evidence of malformations. Since 19 children had bilateral lesions, a total of 50 ears were studied. The cochleovestibular abnormalities were typed and correlated to the

[Giant leiomyoma of the esophagus detected by echocardiography and corroborated by x-ray computed tomography and surgery].

The authors report the case of a 44 year old man with a giant leiomyoma of the lower third of the esophagus. The patient presented with chest pain and the tumour was detected by echocardiography. The diagnosis was confirmed by computerised tomography and histological examination of the surgical specimen weighing 501.5 g. The surgeon performed a large esophago-gastric resection and reestablished the continuity of the digestive track by interposing a section of colon. A good result was obtained with a follow-up of 4 years. The authors underline the potential value of a simple barium swallow duri

Three-dimensional x-ray computed tomography of the temporal bone as an aid to surgical planning.

Three-dimensional x-ray computed tomography (3DCT) has been useful in planning surgical procedures involving craniofacial reconstruction, the pelvis, hip, spine, knee and shoulder. The clinical use of 3DCT in temporal bone surgery has not been evaluated. We used 3DCT to assess temporal bone anatomy in 9 patients. These cases evaluated two encephaloceles, two postinflammatory dehiscences, two temporal bone fractures, one glomus jugulare tumor, one acoustic neuroma, and one meningioma. We found 3DCT useful in these temporal bone applications as a supplement to standard two-dimensional CT scannin

[Cancer of the larynx and computed x-ray tomography: exploration of the hypothyroepiglottic area and paraglottic space].

Twenty patients with laryngeal cancer were explored by tomography and a CT scan. Results were compared between cases and, for operated patients, with histosurgical findings. Results of this study and a review of the literature suggest that the CT scan is the most adapted examination for exploration of the paraglottic and hypothyroepiglottic spaces, but that caution should be exercised when assessing results.

Adaptive filtering method for reducing signal saturation induced artifacts in X-ray dark-field tomography.

X-ray dark-field imaging provides information of an object based on its small-angle scattering properties. Dark-field contrast originates from differences in the strength of scattering from micron and sub-micron sized structures in the object. A Talbot-Lau interferometer can be utilized for dark-field imaging with regular X-ray tubes. A known difficulty with the method arises, when the scattering is too strong, preventing the dark-field and phase retrieval to work accurately. This is similar to a strongly absorbing object in attenuation-based X-ray imaging, and causes problems in tomographic r

Detection of secondary causes of spontaneous pneumothorax: Comparison between computed tomography and chest X-ray.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of chest X-ray to that of thoracic computed tomography (CT) for the detection of the causes of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SP). METHODS: A prospective cohort of patients with SP was studied. All chest X-ray and CT examinations of the patients were reviewed retrospectively by an expert radiologist blinded to clinical data. The concordance between the CT examination and chest X-ray was assessed using the Cohen Kappa coefficient (κ), based on a bootstrap resampling method. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients with SP were inclu

In situ characterization of nanoscale strains in loaded whole joints via synchrotron X-ray tomography.

Imaging techniques for quantifying changes in the hierarchical structure of deforming joints are constrained by destructive sample treatments, sample-size restrictions and lengthy scan times. Here, we report the use of fast low-dose pink-beam synchrotron X-ray tomography in combination with mechanical loading at nanometric precision for in situ imaging, at resolutions below 100 nm, of the mechanical strain in intact untreated joints under physiologically realistic conditions. We show that in young, older and osteoarthritic mice, hierarchical changes in tissue structure and mechanical behaviour

[Implantation of iliosacral screws. Simulation of optimal placement by 3-dimensional X-ray computed tomography].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Percutaneous iliosacral screws are used advantageously to fix unstable pelvic girdle avoiding the morbidity of open access for conventional screw fixation. The insertion technique must be precise due to the risk of injury to the lumbosacral nerve trunk, the cauda equina roots, and the first sacral nerve. We undertook a study of the implantation site of iliosacral screws looking for a means of standardizing the drilling procedure on the basis of 3D computed tomography (CT) data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A CT series with 3D reconstruction was performed on 11 pelvis bones. We

Radiological evaluation of temporal bone disease: high-resolution computed tomography versus conventional X-ray diagnosis.

Sixty-two patients with different temporal bone lesions were prospectively examined by high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and conventional plain radiography, including pluridirectional tomography. High-resolution CT enabled a clear diagnosis in 80% of cases, conventional radiology in 63%; 1.6-times more bone information was recorded by high-resolution CT which is clearly superior for imaging cholesteatomas, metastases and inflammatory processes and for evaluating osseous destruction. With regard to pathological soft tissue or effusions filling the tympanic cavities, conventional radiolog
