Cutaneous melanoma with tonsillar metastasis.

Metastases to the tonsillar fossa due to hematogenous dissemination is an extremely rare phenomenon associated with advanced-stage disease and poor prognosis. In the present report we describe a case of cutaneous melanoma with a metastasis to the tonsil approximately 4 years after the initial diagnosis of the primary disease treated with palliative radiation therapy.

Bilateral tonsillar metastasis of gastric adenocarcinoma.

The occurrence of metastatic tumors in the tonsils, although rare, must be considered in the differential diagnosis of tonsillar lesions. In particular, the review of the literature reports only 7 cases of tonsillar metastasis of gastric carcinoma. The authors describe a case of adenocarcinoma involving bilaterally the palatine tonsils and the lingual tonsil, in a patient previously operated due to gastric adenocarcinoma. The clinical appearance of the lesion could be also consistent with lymphoproliferative or infectious diseases. The clinical and pathologic differential diagnosis of this pec

Leiomyoma of the palatine tonsil - report of a rare and unusual tumor at this site.

A leiomyoma is a remarkably rare cause of a benign, one-side tonsillar enlargement. The diagnosis is essentially histologic and will not normally be suspected clinically. Immunohistochemistry is needed for substantiation of the morphology and confirmation. We submit this illustrative case report.

Extragonadal Non-gestational Choriocarcinoma with Tonsillar Presentation.

Extragonadal non-gestational choriocarcinoma is a rare but well-described phenomenon occurring in patients with midline germ cell tumors. Choriocarcinoma (ChC) is an aggressive neoplasm usually developing in women as a rare complication of pregnancy. In male patients ChC occurs in the testes, usually as a component of mixed germ cell tumors. Very few patients develop extragonadal choriocarcinoma with the tumor occurring in midline locations, such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and central nervous system (mostly pineal gland). Non-midline choriocarcinoma can occur in the lung, gastrointes

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tonsil: a very rare presentation.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant salivary gland tumour. However, short series or individual case reports have identified this tumour in the maxilla, mandible, breast tissue and thymus. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma originates from minor salivary glands, and it is therefore surprising that it is not more commonly seen in the tonsil. To date, we believe there has been only one previously reported case in the world literature of mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurring in the tonsil 1. We present a very rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from within the structure of the palat

Solitary neurofibroma of the palatine tonsil: a case report.

We present a rare case of a benign tumor of the tonsil in a 49-year-old woman. The tumor was excised in its entirety, and the patient's postoperative course was uneventful. No evidence of recurrence was detected during follow-up. Although some sporadic cases of tonsillar schwannoma have been reported, to the best of our knowledge this is only the second case of a solitary neurofibroma of the palatine tonsil to be reported in the English-language literature.

Pleomorphic lipoma of the tonsillar fossa--a case report.

Pleomorphic lipoma is a benign adipocytic tumor, commonly located in the shoulder and posterior neck region. The presence of bizarre, hyperchromatic stromal cells along with multinucleated giant cells often poses difficulty in diagnosis, especially when it arises at an unusual site like tonsillar fossa.

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary gland arising in the tonsil with metastasis to a cervical lymph node: A case report with description of fine needle aspiration cytology.

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland (CAMSG) is a rare tumor of the head and neck. We report a case of a 70-year-old female who presented with a 4-5-month history of a left neck mass. CT scan of the neck showed a left neck mass just inferior to the angle of the mandible and left tonsillar prominence. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the neck mass showed epithelial groups with focal cribriform architecture. The cells had round to oval nuclei and fine chromatin. The background contained scattered lymphocytes. A preliminary diagnosis of low grade adenocarcinoma with cribriform feature

Atypical carcinoid tumour of the larynx treated with CO2 laser excision: case report.

A case of atypical laryngeal carcinoid tumour of the right aryepiglottic fold is described in a 56-year-old female. The patient presented a 4-year history of dysphagia, occasional dyspnoea and pain originating in the right tonsillar fossa and radiating to the ear. A sessile, submucosal neoplasm of about 1 cm in diameter and apparently benign appearance was detected endoscopically in the supraglottic region. An excisional biopsy was collected by CO2 laser during direct microlaryngoscopy from which a diagnosis of atypical carcinoid tumour of the larynx was made, and later confirmed by histochemi

Primary Tonsillar Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma with Bone Metastases.

INTRODUCTION: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) that arises from the tonsil is a particularly rare head and neck carcinoma. This kind of neoplasm mainly originated from the bronchopulmonary area; however, there were reported cases of extrapulmonary areas. The prognosis is poor as the tumour is an aggressive tumour and have a high risk of metastasis. CASE REPORT: We experienced a patient presented with painless right neck swelling and hard tonsillar hypertrophy for past six month. Computer tomography showed the tumour extended to the parapharyngeal space and metastasized to the thoraco

Enhancing nodular lesions in Chiari II malformations in the setting of persistent hindbrain herniation: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Chiari II malformation includes concomitant cerebellar tonsillar herniation, hydrocephalus, and myelomeningocele. Rarely, pediatric patients with persistent hindbrain herniation develop a new enhancing nodule at the cervicomedullary junction as adults. These new lesions may be suspicious for neoplastic growth, but it remains unclear if neurosurgical intervention is necessary. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female patient with history of Chiari II malformation and persistent hindbrain herniation presented with a 3-month history of headache and upper extremity weakness and numbness. Neu

Gastric adenocarcinoma with tonsil and submaxillary gland metastases: case report.

Local invasion, hematogenous and lymphatic metastases are the major modes of spreading gastric cancer. The most common sites of metastases in patients with gastric cancer are liver, peritoneum, omentum, lungs and mesentery. Of the two pathological types of gastric cancer, intestinal-type gastric cancer showed preferential metastasis to the liver, whereas the diffuse-type showed a preference for peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis. However, metastases of gastric cancer to the head and neck regions are not common. The hematogenous route appears to account for a great majority of met

Hodgkin lymphoma involving Waldeyer ring: a clinicopathologic study of 22 cases.

We report 22 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma involving Waldeyer ring seen at our institution during a 31-year interval. There were 16 males (73%) and 6 females (27%) with a median age of 48 years (range, 5-81 years), and 15 (68%) patients had airway obstruction or tonsillar enlargement. For 19 patients, the clinical stage was as follows: I, 7 (32%); II, 11 (50%); and III, 1 (5%). The 3 patients (14%) whose disease was unstaged had concurrent or a history of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Histologically, the neoplasms were classified as follows: lymphocyte-rich classical, 8 (36%); nodular sclerosis, 7 (32%);

Pediatric follicular lymphomas, marginal zone lymphomas, and marginal zone hyperplasia.

Whereas most B-cell lymphomas in children are of diffuse large B-cell or Burkitt type, other B-cell lymphomas, including follicular and marginal zone B-cell lymphomas, rarely occur Pediatric follicular lymphomas (FLs) have many features indistinguishable from those seen in adults but demonstrate an increased proportion that are localized, lack bcl-2 protein expression, lack bcl-2 translocations, and are grade 3 but still indolent. They also tend to have large expansile follicles. Although usually at nodal or tonsillar sites, other extranodal involvement also occurs, with FL of the testis well
