Dental surface restoration using Ca-caseinate bio/nano colloids: Converged roughness parameters reveal heterogeneous tooth surface reactivity.

Dental erosion, the chemical dissolution of the tooth surface structures, is an increasing problem in the modern world due to growing trends toward acidic food consumption and can cause permanent dental hard tissue loss. A detailed understanding of the reactivity of dental surfaces to chemicals invading the oral cavity is necessary to devise effective countermeasures. We introduce the use of converged roughness parameters Sqconv, i.e., roughness parameters calculated at a reduced field of view, to reflect the critical surface building blocks controlling the reactivity, as measured by white lig

Investigation of the effect of various fluoride compounds and preparations thereof on erosive tissue loss in enamel in vitro.

Metal fluoride preparations are promising in view of protection against dental erosion. The aim of this study was to screen the effect fluoride preparations containing various polyvalent metal cations had on erosion progression under increasingly severe erosive conditions in human enamel in vitro. Specimens were subjected to a cyclic de- and remineralisation procedure. Demineralisation (experiment E1 and E2a: 6 x 2 min/day, experiment E2b: 6 x 5 min/day) was performed with 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.3). Fluoridation directly followed demineralisation and was reduced stepwise (E1: 6 x 2 min/day,

Tooth brushing, tooth wear and dentine hypersensitivity--are they associated?

Evidence suggests that patients suffer the painful symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity when dentine is exposed and the dentinal tubule system is opened to the oral cavity to allow stimuli to trigger a neural response in the pulp via a hydrodynamic mechanism. The processes needed to localise lesions of dentine hypersensitivity include loss of enamel and/or gingival recession. Whilst tooth brushing with or without toothpaste appears to cause minimal wear to enamel (in the absence of acids), circumstantial evidence implicates tooth brushing with gingival recession and exposure of dentine. Other

Tooth wear: the view of the anthropologist.

Anthropologists have for many years considered human tooth wear a normal physiological phenomenon where teeth, although worn, remain functional throughout life. Wear was considered pathological only if pulpal exposure or premature tooth loss occurred. In addition, adaptive changes to the stomatognathic system in response to wear have been reported including continual eruption, the widening of the masticatory cycle, remodelling of the temporomandibular joint and the shortening of the dental arches from tooth migration. Comparative studies of many different species have also documented these phy

Aetiological, predisposing and environmental factors in dentine hypersensitivity.

If the hydrodynamic theory of stimulus transmission across dentine is valid, sensitive dentine has tubules open at the surface and patent to the pulp. Direct and indirect evidence supports this supposition. Factors that result in dentine exposure remove the covering enamel or periodontal tissues (gingival recession). Epidemiological and clinical data for the distribution of exposed cervical dentine indicate that chronic trauma from physical and chemical factors is the most significant aetiological factor. Brushing with a toothpaste may not open dentinal tubules. It is more likely that toothpas

Root resorption associated with mandibular bone erosion in a patient with scleroderma.

A rare feature of mandibular bone erosion and external apical resorption of a mandibular left third molar (tooth #17) in a patient with scleroderma is described. Scleroderma is characterized by vascular and fibrous changes of the mucocutaneous surfaces and viscera caused by immunologically mediated connective tissue disorders. A dental panoramic tomogram of the patient revealed notable erosion of the left ramus, the inferior border of the mandible, and the left coronoid process. Resorption of the distal root of the tooth #17 was notable, coincident with the mandibular erosive process, and such

Incidence and progression of dental erosion in adolescents and adults: results from the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to acidic and mechanical forces results in the continuous loss of dental hard tissue over the course of life, commonly referred to as tooth wear. However, longitudinal data on tooth wear are limited. Particularly, data on acid-induced wear, such as dental erosion, are scarce. This study assessed the incidence and progression of dental erosion over 9 years in adolescents and adults using data from the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6). METHOD AND MATERIALS: The sample included 371 adolescents and 341 adults from the DMS • 6 cohort who were first examined in 2014 (base

Evaluation of dental erosion in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The cause of dental erosion may be difficult to establish because of its many presentations. Determination of the cause is an important aspect of diagnosis before extensive prosthodontic rehabilitation. PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between loss of tooth structure as a result of dental erosion and gastroesophageal reflux disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive adult dentate subjects referred to the Division of Gastroenterology for investigation of gastroesophageal tract disease were also evaluated for signs of dental erosion. Oral-health-related quality of life among undergraduate dental students with Tooth Wear.

BACKGROUND: Tooth Wear results from multiple mechanisms, including erosion (chemical loss), attrition (tooth-to-tooth contact), and abrasion (mechanical wear), represent an emerging concern among young individuals (Li MHM, Bernabé E. J Dent. 55:48-53, 2016). The severity of Tooth Wear can be measured using the Tooth Wear Index, which scores each tooth surface from 0 to 4. With time this mechanism can proceed to visible lesions on the tooth surface; these lesions may cause dysfunction, increase sensitivity, and disfigure facial appearance. Understanding the role of target population, behavioral

On dental erosion and associated factors.

The aim of this thesis was to explore aspects of dental erosion by investigating its prevalence among young Saudi men and young children, develop a system for its assessment and to evaluate various tentative background factors that may be associated with its occurrence. Saudi military inductees (n = 95) were subjected to questionnaire and clinical examination, including recordings of severity of dental erosion and a number of other oral health parameters. The system applied for grading the severity of dental erosion showed an intraexaminer agreement of 78%. Around one-fourth of the maxillary a

[Oral manifestations in gastroesophageal reflux disease].

The gastroesophageal reflux (passage of gastric contents into the oesophagus and the mouth) is the main sign/symptom of a very frequent gastroesophageal reflux disease. Thus, acid regurgitation originates from stomach and it is responsible of the onset of typical symptoms and mucosal injury. Also in oral cavity the noxious acid agent is able to injury oral cavity (soft and hard tissues). These effects are described from international literature, even if a greater interest has shown to date only for hard tissue injury.

[Dental wear as a stomatologic manifestation of bulimia nervosa--a clinical case].

The number of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa is increasing nowadays. The typical oral feature of these eating disorders is the dental erosion which causes sensitivity of the teeth and esthetic problems for the involved patients. This phenomenon is a characteristic feature in these cases and it may be the first sign of the mentioned disorders. The purpose of the study was to describe the generally the most characteristic oral findings of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa because the dentists play a significant role in recognizing the basic problem of the patients, and they can se

Bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa is a disorder affecting the eating patterns of women in industrialized societies. Medical and dental consequences of the illness often lead patients to seek treatment after about six years. Controlled treatment studies to date utilize outpatient therapy instead of hospitalization. Published literature suggests that the illness is most effectively treated with psychotherapy and antidepressant medications; however, including nutritional intervention in the treatment regimen shows promise. Clearly more studies are necessary.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease and dental erosion. A case report and review of the literature.

The term gastroesophageal reflux refers to the regurgitation of gastric material into the oesophagus. When the reflux is accompanied by inflammation of the oesophageal mucosa and extra-oesophageal symptoms the complaint is classified as a pathological condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is caused by backward expulsion of the gastric content into the oesophagus. It is characterized by a complex clinical picture that may include lesions of the oesophageal mucosa and lesions of a different nature and severity of the respiratory and stomatognathic apparatus. GERD is consi
