Efficacy of Different Sterilization Techniques for Toothbrush Decontamination: An Ex Vivo Study.

Background Contaminated toothbrushes can cause several oral and systemic illnesses. This study aimed to identify the most rapid, effective, and affordable method for toothbrush decontamination. In addition, the most prevalent bacterial species colonizing toothbrushes were determined. Methodology Toothbrushes were collected after two weeks of use by 55 volunteers. The bacterial count was measured before and after sterilization using 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 0.1% Listerine, 70% white alcohol, 10% povidone-iodine, 1% sodium hypochlorite, 2% glutaraldehyde, ultraviolet radiation, microwave ir

Life-threatening injury caused by complete impalement of a toothbrush: Case report.

Toothbrushes are the most common cause of foreign body injury to the oral cavity in children, but complete impalement by a toothbrush is an extremely rare occurrence and has not been reported previously. This report describes a 28-month-old girl who fell from a 1m ledge while brushing her teeth. Her toothbrush penetrated the oral cavity and could not be removed, and so she was rushed to the hospital with the toothbrush in place. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed penetration of the toothbrush from the oral cavity into and through the right posterior neck at the level of the bifurcati

Parotid salivary secretion induced by stimulation of periodontal regions with toothbrush in humans.

The act of brushing teeth induces salivary secretion. However, there is no evidence to show which particular regions of the teeth and oral cavity in brushing induces the most effective salivary secretion. We investigated the effects of tooth brushing in different oral regions on parotid salivary secretion in humans. Saliva was collected using a modified Lashley cup. Brushing of the gingival margin was performed according to the Bass method, which may stimulate periodontal mechanoreceptors. The occlusal surface of the molars, gingiva, tongue, and palatal rugae were also brushed with a toothbrus

Implantoplasty Positively Influences Biofilm Removal During Toothbrush: An In Vitro Study.

PURPOSE: To analyse the effect of implantoplasty on the efficacy of brushing dental implants. METHODS: Acrylic hemi-arches were made to simulate a horizontal bone loss condition in an implant in position 46, exposing 3 mm of its cervical intra-osseous portion. Implantoplasty was performed on the implant surfaces of the test group, and no surface modification was performed on the control group. The exposed portion of both groups was coated with carbon spray to simulate dental biofilm. Each site was analysed before and after brushing for a carbon-free area. Buccal/oral sites were brushed with t

Buccal Space Implantation of a Toothbrush Following Traumatic Fall: A Case Report.

Impalement injuries to the oral cavity are common in preschool-aged children due to their tendency to fall while holding objects in their mouths. A variety of items, including pencils, straws, cylindrical toys, chopsticks, spoons, forks, and toothbrushes, can lead to such injuries. This case report discusses the management of a 4-year-old girl who sustained an accidental toothbrush impalement into the left buccal mucosa, demonstrating satisfactory healing during follow-up visits. Timely management of impalement injuries is essential to avoid severe complications.

A Brush With Danger: A Case Report of a Toothbrush Impalement Injury to the Oral Cavity.

Paediatric oral impalement injuries are uncommon but may be associated with significant morbidity due to the proximity of critical neurovascular structures within the head and neck. We report a case of a 4-year-old male who sustained a partial impalement injury to the oral cavity following a fall at home whilst brushing his teeth. The toothbrush head penetrated the right pterygomandibular raphe and became lodged medial to the mandibular ramus. Surgical exploration and removal were performed under general anaesthesia, followed by wound irrigation and primary closure. The patient made an unevent

A successful endoscopic extraction of accidently ingested toothbrush in an adult: a case report.

Toothbrush ingestion is a rare phenomenon. It is usually found in psychiatric, elderly and mentally disabled patients. Foreign bodies usually pass spontaneously and uneventfully through the gastrointestinal tract. Nevertheless, larger objects may require early intervention to avoid complications. This report describes the course of treatment for a 25-year-old woman with an accidentally ingested toothbrush.

Accidental duodenal foreign body of toothbrush removed laparoscopically: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion is a common case in daily medical care, and it usually passes through the entire gastrointestinal tract naturally and is excreted in the feces. However, long and sharp foreign bodies may be difficult to pass naturally due to their shape. Here, we present a rare case of a duodenal foreign body, a toothbrush, that required laparoscopic surgical removal after a failed endoscopic attempt. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old male with intellectual disability presented to our hospital due to fever. Initially, he was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia by chest X-ray
