In the United States, new regulations on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides will likely be offset by expanded use of first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides. In the present study, eastern screech-owls (Megascops asio) were fed 10 µg diphacinone/g wet weight food for 7 d, and recovery was monitored over a 21-d postexposure period. By day 3 of exposure, diphacinone (DPN) was detected in liver (1.63 µg/g wet wt) and kidney (5.83 µg/g) and coagulopathy was apparent. By day 7, prothrombin time (PT) and Russell's viper venom time (RVVT) were prolonged, and some individuals were anemic.

Repeated intraperitoneal injections of nickel and chromium (VI) into rats appeared to demonstrate that the combined subchronic toxicity can be additive or vary (mostly to subadditivity) in accordance with effect on which they are evaluated. With moderate general toxic effects, the studied combination has marked genotoxicity with additive effect. The studies demonstrated reciprocal influence of nickel and chromium on accumulation of the second metal in some organs (especially, in spleen), but not on its renal excretion.

CASE: We present the case of a 75-year-old patient admitted to the emergency department after ingesting a large amount of several cardiac drugs, among which were digoxin and sotalol. Because of renal insufficiency, cardiogenic shock, and high serum digoxin levels, the patient received continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) and digoxin-specific Fab fragments. Digoxin and the digoxin-specific Fab fragments are normally cleared by the kidneys.

Aconitum napellus is an extremely dangerous plant that contains various toxic diterpenoid alkaloids, mainly aconitine primarily concentrated in the roots. We report a case of acute intoxication of a 21-year-old man admitted to our Emergency Department after the ingestion, in order to sleep, of three homemade Aconitum napellus capsules.
