Traffic-related air pollution exposures and changes in heart rate variability in Mexico City: a panel study.

BACKGROUND: While air pollution exposures have been linked to cardiovascular outcomes, the contribution from acute gas and particle traffic-related pollutants remains unclear. Using a panel study design with repeated measures, we examined associations between personal exposures to traffic-related air pollutants in Mexico City and changes in heart rate variability (HRV) in a population of researchers aged 22 to 56 years. METHODS: Participants were monitored for approximately 9.5 hours for eight days while operating a mobile laboratory van designed to characterize traffic pollutants while drivi

Effects of traffic-related air and noise pollution exposure on allergic diseases in the elderly: an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Traffic-related air and noise pollution are important public health issues. The aim of this study was to estimate their effects on allergic/respiratory outcomes in adult and elderly subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six hundred and forty-five subjects living in Pisa (Tuscany, Italy) were investigated through a questionnaire on allergic/respiratory symptoms and diseases. Traffic-related air pollution and noise exposures were assessed at residential address by questionnaire, modelled annual mean NO2 concentrations (1 km and 200 m resolution), and noise level over a 24-h period (Lde

Is breast cancer a result of epigenetic responses to traffic-related air pollution? A review of the latest evidence.

Environmental toxicants can exert adverse health effects via epigenetic regulation. We conducted a review of studies assessing traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure and breast cancer (BC) risk, and the evidence for epigenetic mediation. 14 epidemiological studies demonstrated associations between TRAP exposure and BC risk, in which a total of 26 comparisons were assessed. 11 of these comparisons reported a positive association; whereas 15 comparisons were negative. Five publications linked TRAP exposure to epigenetic alterations in genes that may be related to BC risk. One animal study

Climate, traffic-related air pollutants and allergic rhinitis prevalence in middle-school children in Taiwan.

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis, a common respiratory disorder, may be rapidly increasing. Epidemiological studies, however, indicate little about its association with climatic factors and air pollution. The relationship between traffic-related air pollutants and allergic rhinitis in middle-school students was therefore investigated. In a nationwide survey of middle-school students in Taiwan conducted in 1995/1996, the lifetime prevalence of physician-diagnosed allergic rhinitis and typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis were compared with air-monitoring station data on temperature, relativ

Nrf2-related gene expression and exposure to traffic-related air pollution in elderly subjects with cardiovascular disease: An exploratory panel study.

Gene expression changes are linked to air pollutant exposures in in vitro and animal experiments. However, limited data are available on how these outcomes relate to ambient air pollutant exposures in humans. We performed an exploratory analysis testing whether gene expression levels were associated with air pollution exposures in a Los Angeles area cohort of elderly subjects with coronary artery disease. Candidate genes (35) were selected from published studies of gene expression-pollutant associations. Expression levels were measured weekly in 43 subjects (≤ 12 weeks) using quantitative PCR.

Childhood asthma development and early life exposure to traffic-related air pollution: effect modification by indoor biological agents.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with childhood asthma, but whether indoor biological co-exposures modify the association is unclear. We examined associations between early-life TRAP exposure and asthma-related outcomes and assessed interactions with indoor biological co-exposures. METHODS: We used data from the CHILD Study, a Canadian prospective birth cohort. Residential ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations during the first three months post-birth was used as a proxy for TRAP exposure, while endotoxin, dog and cat allergens wer

Personal exposures to traffic-related air pollution in three Canadian bus transit systems: the Urban Transportation Exposure Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is associated with increased incidence of several cardiopulmonary diseases. The elevated TRAP exposures of commuting environments can result in significant contributions to daily exposures. OBJECTIVES: To assess the personal TRAP exposures (UFPs, BC, PM2.5, and PM10) of the bus transit systems of Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver, Canada. Personal exposure models estimated the contribution of bus commuting to daily TRAP exposures. Associations between bus type and riding exposures and bus stop/station type and waiting exposures were es

Traffic-related air pollution exposure is associated with allergic sensitization, asthma, and poor lung function in middle age.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure is associated with allergic airway diseases and reduced lung function in children, but evidence concerning adults, especially in low-pollution settings, is scarce and inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether exposure to TRAP in middle age is associated with allergic sensitization, current asthma, and reduced lung function in adults, and whether these associations are modified by variants in Glutathione S-Transferase genes. METHODS: The study sample comprised the proband 2002 laboratory study of the Tasmanian Longitudin

Associations between microvascular function and short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and particulate matter oxidative potential.

BACKGROUND: Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with acute increases in cardiovascular hospitalization and mortality. However, causative chemical components and underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain to be clarified. We hypothesized that endothelial dysfunction would be associated with mobile-source (traffic) air pollution and that pollutant components with higher oxidative potential to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) would have stronger associations. METHODS: We carried out a cohort panel study in 93 elderly non-smoking adults living in the Los An

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and childhood cancer: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Previous studies have suggested a possible link between traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and the risk of childhood cancers, though findings remain inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at evaluating the association between TRAP exposure and childhood cancer risk, focusing on prenatal and postnatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and benzene. Peer-reviewed manuscripts were identified through PubMed (n = 1,116), Web of Science (n = 578), and Cochrane Library (n = 163) databases through June 21, 2024. Five reviewers independently scr

Impact of traffic-related air pollution exposure on fractional exhaled nitric oxide: A systematic review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-Related Air Pollution (TRAP) is a complicated mix of gases and particulates associated with respiratory oxidative stress and immunological dysfunction. FeNO (Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide) is emerging as an essential biomarker for inflammation. The duration, specific exposure patterns, and magnitude of associations of FeNO with TRAP remain unclear. This research synthesizes and analyzes the evidence linking specific TRAP to FeNO alteration in human population. METHODS AND RESULTS: A systematic review across 3 databases: PubMed, Scopus and Embase, until 3 February 2026, y

Comprehensive review of intake fraction methods for assessing traffic-related air pollution exposure: insights, variations, and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) poses significant risks to human health, particularly in urban areas with high traffic volumes. Intake fraction (iF) quantifies the relationship between emissions and exposure, defined as the ratio of the total inhalation increment of all exposed individuals in a target population to the emissions from specific pollution sources over a certain period. OBJECTIVE: The overarching objective of this study is to unravel the underlying value and significance of the iF method in evaluating TRAP exposure risks, while also exploring its future developme
